Book excerpt: Photography is the emphasis of Edison Boodoosingh's book, TRINIDAD & TOBAGO – A Caribbean Expression of Colourful Diversity. The photographer seeks to give a probing pictorial perspective into the natural, social, economical and cultural character of this fascinating Caribbean nation of some 1.3 million people. The book is organised into seven sections: People & Culture, Architecture & Monuments, National Festivals, Eco-systems & Natural Wonders, Commerce & Industry, Sights & Scenes and The Faces of the Races. Whilst the vast array of wonderful photographs is the chief protagonist in the narrative of this book, there is a complementing balance of a well written series of insightful and informative supplemental articles and captions which give a qualified literary dimension. This pictorial reportage gives a 'through-the-lens' view of the modern face of the culture of Trinidad and Tobago. It is a perspective that captures facets of daily life which are based on a remarkable mixture of historical and social elements. These components are principally derived from a rich vein of such sub-cultures including the aboriginal Amerindians, Western Europeans, West Africans, East Indians, Chinese, Middle Easterners and sundry extra regional influences. This unique blend of cultural ingredients is a result of the great demographic redistribution and population infusion of the region which began during the nation's formative years in the modern era, roughly between the 16th and the 19th centuries. Geographically and ecologically, from the seaside, the country plains and into the lush hillside regions, the photographer snaps a broad and enthralling range of the nation's natural habitat. This kaleidoscope of scenic features make up a series of quite varied and expansive biological systems and physical landscapes which form the rich environmental complex of Trinidad and Tobago. The stunning photography across the pages of this volume gives a compelling and discerning visual commentary of this unique Caribbean nation. The wide assortment of images highlights the distinctly intricate cultural network of people and places, along with, characters and customs, mingling in the colourful social ambience of their local habitat. The surrounding backdrop is adorned with elaborate facades of tropical flora and fauna. It is altogether, a beautiful presentation of Trinidad and Tobago.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on equality, inclusion, and discrimination within the English-speaking Caribbean region, specifically as it relates to employment, education, society, and the law. Though anti-discrimination laws have recently been enacted in the Caribbean, this, in and of itself, neither translates to societal changes nor changes within the organisational context. The authors examine racial diversity in public sector organisations in Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana, gender diversity in organisations across the Caribbean region, sexual orientation and its impact on employment, disability and access within organisations, and equality and inclusion within Caribbean institutions of higher education. Further, the book explores the region’s equality laws and compares them with legislation from selected developed countries. This interdisciplinary text provides researchers in HRM, organisational behavior, sociology, and public policy with an overview of the types of discrimination prevalent within the Caribbean as well as the varied institutional frameworks in place that encourage equality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where on earth is this place called Tobago in which twenty six authors have come together to produce an anthology called, Tobago in Print, vol 1? While the geographical location of this precious, unique and serene island can be easily placed at the near-southernmost tip of the Caribbean chain of islands, its soul and spirit shine out in the pages of this riveting book. Perhaps the soul of the island is best captured by Crystal Skeete, Tobago’s champion spoken word artiste who writes, “’Bago is the place that we win wars with we mouth not with guns and knife”. Whatever the island of Tobago is, the Tobago Writers Guild production of this book is a work of love unity and excellence. Members thank the group’s guru Marlene Nourbese Phillips, herself an award winning author of the book, “Harriet’s Daughter” who nurtured in them the belief that they can accomplish this book. She has herself written a very fitting foreword to the book declaring that it “illustrates the breadth of English expression that is the linguistic reality and heritage of Tobago.” The work of each of the 26 contributors to this book is a study of creativity and original thought. It reflects an exciting array of themes, styles and perspectives. It answers the question of exactly what are the concerns of Caribbean people and its writers. Is it for good health care as so graphically presented by Gloria Austin in “Heart to Heart”, or for the preservation of the island’s traditions explored by Milca Robinson Reid in “Heritage Beginnings” or the age-old prejudices of skin colour recorded by Laureen Burris Phillip in “Growing Up Red” or for future of its youth in “De African Dimension” of Deborah Moore-Miggins? In this book, it is all these things and more. Reginald O. Phillips also took time to pay tribute to Tobago’s icon and internationally recognized statesman in the person of deceased former Prime Minister - and President of Trinidad and Tobago, Arthur Napoleon Raymond Robinson. Indeed, this book is a collector’s item for Caribbean people and those interested in Caribbean literature.

Book excerpt: The family is the genesis of all societies. Every culture has its distinct rules by which a family is governed, and the Caribbean family is no exception. Those rules differ within each group; for the Indians, Chinese, and Africans. Making up most of the population in the Caribbean, African families have spawned several sub-units or types; some of which are unique to the African culture. This book explores each family type and their history within the Caribbean.

Book excerpt: Perspectives in Caribbean Psychology attempts to record the unique psychological character of those who live in the Caribbean and more broadly people of African-Caribbean heritage. It considers the impact of colonialism, the struggle for domination by various European and North American countries through history on individuals, and the unique psychological realities that have emerged from attempts to come to terms with the realities of Caribbean culture and experience. Contributors address prevalent issues of violence, mental illness, stigma, psychopathology and HIV/AIDS, and chronicle the adaptation, cultural retentions, resilience and migratory tenacity of the Caribbean people, both within their geographic communities and in the Diaspora. This book makes the case for a definitively Caribbean psychology with a range of chapters on psychological assessment, understanding and treatment modalities culled from a Caribbean experience. It will be an invaluable source of reference for anyone with an interest in multicultural psychology, as well as for social work and mental health professionals working with members of the Caribbean community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender Variances and Sexual Diversity in the Caribbean: Perspectives, Histories, Experiences is a collection of critical perspectives on fundamental questions of how sexual orientation and gender in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean are conceived, studied, discoursed and experienced. Bringing together and updating existing and in-progress scholarly work on minority genders and sexualities in the region, this collection seeks to provide a fresh set of lenses through which to examine the issues affecting people in the Caribbean who fall outside the traditional binary categories of heterosexual males or heterosexual females. Opening with a variety of perspectives - from the biological to the religious and historiographical - the volume explores definitions of sex and gender as well as constructions of sexuality among Commonwealth Caribbean scholars, and the ways in which the Judaeo-Christian tradition popular in the region has responded to these. Other chapters examine the socializing forces that reinforce or challenge conventional conceptions of gender and sexuality, and how these result in the constraining forces of social exclusion and discrimination that many members of the LGBTQ community in the region experience. The book ends with chapters that interrogate the normative standards of gender and sexuality that have traditionally underlain Caribbean popular culture. Additionally, there is an exploration of how anti-gay discourse in Jamaican dancehall, embedded in a language linked to the country's vernacular nationalism, has been neutralized by a coalition of local and international LGBTQ activists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 21st century sees an increasing number of cultural minorities in the United States. Particularly, the rise in multi-cultural or mixed heritage families is on the rise. As with many trends, just as the amount of diversity increases, so does the level of resistance in groups that oppose this diversity. While this problem exists through life for persons from multicultural backgrounds, the tension is particularly acute for children, whose identities and socialization experiences are still in formation. With parents from different cultural backgrounds, as well as school and community experiences giving that might question their diverse heritage, children are likely to experience distressing confusion. How can they come to terms with this conflict, and how can family and community help them to resolve it? Combining case studies and interviews, this work particularly focuses on multi-cultural families as a yet untapped source of information about inter-culture contact. Voices of Diversity: Multiculturalism in America will be both a resource for researchers and practitioners, as well as a practical guide to families dealing with these issues every day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caribbean Diaspora in the USA presents a new cultural theory based on an exploration of Caribbean religious communities in New York City. The Caribbean culture of New York demonstrates a cultural dynamism which embraces Spanish speaking, English speaking and French speaking migrants. All cultures are full of breaks and contradictions as Latin American and Caribbean theorists have demonstrated in their ongoing debate. This book combines unique research by the author in Caribbean New York with the theoretical discourse of Latin American and Caribbean scholars. Focusing on Caribbean religious communities, including Cuban/Puerto Rican Santería (Regla de Ocha), Haitian Vodou, Shango (Orisha Baptist) from Trinidad and Tobago, and Brazilian Pentecostal church, Schmidt's observations lead to the construction of a cultural concept that illustrates a culture in an ongoing state of change, with more than one form of expression depending on situation, time and context. Showing the creativity of religions and the way immigrants adapt to their new surroundings, this book fills a gap between Latin American and Caribbean Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on 15 months of ethnographic research in one of the most under-developed regions in the Caribbean island of Trinidad, this book describes the uses and consequences of social media for its residents. Jolynna Sinanan argues that this semi-urban town is a place in-between: somewhere city dwellers look down on and villagers look up to. The complex identity of the town is expressed through uses of social media, with significant results for understanding social media more generally. Not elevating oneself above others is one of the core values of the town, and social media becomes a tool for social visibility; that is, the process of how social norms come to be and how they are negotiated. Carnival logic and high-impact visuality is pervasive in uses of social media, even if Carnival is not embraced by all Trinidadians in the town and results in presenting oneself and association with different groups in varying ways. The study also has surprising results in how residents are explicitly non-activist and align themselves with everyday values of maintaining good relationships in a small town, rather than espousing more worldly or cosmopolitan values.
