Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter is being built in larger numbers than any other military aircraft today. It has won every export sales battle that it has engaged in. Hundreds are in service with the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps, and with U.S. allies worthwhile. This book argues that it has been a failure. The last of more than 1,700 F-35s that the Air Force needs to replace Cold War-era F-16s and F-15s will be 25 years late, according to the schedule set in 2001. The older jets are beginning to wear out, beyond economic repair, with no airplanes to replace them. Entire squadrons are being withdrawn from the forces needed to support operations worldwide and deter China and Russia. And as this report appears, no F-35s are being delivered. Brand-new airplanes costing $100-$150 million each are rolling off the production line into a secret storage location because of faulty electronics. They won't be combat-ready until late 2025. How did this happen? In a penetrating, meticulously researched report for the professional reader, veteran investigative journalist and industry executive Bill Sweetman explains how the project was launched in the 1990s with complex, conflicting goals and an unsound strategy. When things inevitably went wrong, as the airplane gained weight, proved almost impossible to build and susceptible to overheating, and as the 1990s-technology electronics proved unequal to what was demands of them, program leaders refused to slow down. They set unrealistic schedules and budgets for fixing problems. Every failed fix made matters worse. Both the government program office - nominally working for us - and prime contractor Lockheed Martin pumped out rosy promises about getting the program back on track, publishing fanciful schedules, minimizing problems and attacking critics. Senior defense leaders, Congress and media, preoccupied with war, paid too little attention. And now the Air Force is falling apart, its fleet "geriatric" in the words of a senior retired officer, or to quote one of D.C.'s leading defense budget wonks, "in a death spiral". In conclusion, Sweetman outlines some radical changes to eliminate perverse incentives from defense procurement. "It is excellent" - former Deputy Defense Secretary "Just started reading, and already hooked!" - defense analyst and advisor to British House of Commons

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten years after the landmark legislation, Ezekiel Emanuel leads a crowd of experts, policy-makers, doctors, and scholars as they evaluate the Affordable Care Act's history so far. In March 2010, the Affordable Care Act officially became one of the seminal laws determining American health care. From day one, the law was challenged in court, making it to the Supreme Court four separate times. It transformed the way a three-trillion-dollar sector of the economy behaved and brought insurance to millions of people. It spawned the Tea Party, further polarized American politics, and affected the electoral fortunes of both parties. Ten years after the bill's passage, a constellation of experts--insiders and academics for and against the ACA--describe the momentousness of the legislation. Encompassing Democrats and Republicans, along with legal, financial, and health policy experts, the essays here offer a fascinating and revealing insight into the political fight of a generation, its consequences for health care, politics, law, the economy-and the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We tend to think of dominos as standing the tiles on end and then tipping the first one over, toppling into the second, which falls into the third until finally all the dominoes have fallen. In 2008 the first of many financial dominos began falling. Many were worried and looked to Washington for leadership. Instead, we saw only politics-as-usual. But as 2009 and 2010 unfolded, it became too benign to suggest our stricken economy was simply toppled dominos. It was more accurate to describe our condition as an economic "train wreck." The financial chaos as a result of the crisis was heightened by an extraordinary government intervention to triage the shattered economy. Many feared, with justification, that we may be teetering on the brink of this generation's Great Depression. The near-death experience the U.S. economy has suffered forced Americans to turn inward and question our leaders. Our worries have multiplied. Our free market system and ultimately the "American Dream" itself now seem more vulnerable than ever. More importantly, we doubt ourselves and our leaders and long for our life-before. This is a book that chronicles the unfolding disaster of our nation's financial "train wreck." For two crucial years, Kevin Clark had broadcast financial analysis that became a play-by-play of the economic collapse. Now, with hindsight, he revisits recent history and brings what he calls a "Main Street" perspective of this most critical moment in the modern life of America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pantex was built during World War II near the town of Amarillo, Texas. The site was converted early in the Cold War to assemble nuclear weapons and produce high explosives. For nearly fifty years Pantex has been the sole assembly and disassembly plant for nuclear weapons in the United States. Today, most of the activities of the plant consist of the manufacture of high explosive components and the dismantlement or life extension of weapons. Unlike the much more famous nuclear-weapons-production sites at Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, Hanford, and Rocky Flats, the Pantex plant has drawn little attention, hidden under a metaphoric “cap of invisibility.” Lucie Genay now lifts that invisibility cap to give the world its first in-depth look at Pantex and the people who have spent their lives as neighbors and employees of this secretive industry. The book investigates how Pantex has impacted local identity by molding elements of the past into the guaranty of its future and its concealment. It further examines the multiple facets of Pantexism through the voices of native and adoptive Panhandlers.

Book excerpt: This contribution argues that a long-established social order has been in place since the first stratified societies in the Near Middle East which unavoidably comes with substantial economic, political and environmental repercussions. Part I of the book dissects the various facets of this order, which is termed the social dominance paradigm, while in Part II a fundamentally different order, the peace paradigm, is introduced. The latter rests on real democracy (in the Athenian sense), sustainability and peace. As such, both paradigms function as vehicles for further analysis and research while the peace paradigm also provides a rough plan for the implementation of transformational change. Typically, political, economic, social, and environmental research seeks to increase specialized knowledge. Here, however, the overall intent is to utilize interdisciplinary evidence and connect the dots between a number defining features within seemingly modern societies. The argument is that these are, in fact, not modern at all but follow an ancient template of power, control, and coordination concentrated in the hands of the few. Potentially, this contribution can function as a trans-disciplinary methodological framework as well as an information hub for researchers in the fields of political and social sciences, history, anthropology, evolutionary biology, organization and peace studies. Practitioners who are interested in fundamental social change may also find the issues raised to be of interest. As such, this book provides a generalist, evidence-based discussion of a multi-disciplinary nature that may pique the interest of both experts and amateurs alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging nuclearism explores how a deliberate ‘normalisation’ of nuclear weapons has been constructed, why it has prevailed in international politics for over seventy years and why it is only now being questioned seriously. The book identifies how certain practices have enabled a small group of states to hold vast arsenals of these weapons of mass destruction and how the close control over nuclear decisions by a select group has meant that the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons have been disregarded for decades. The recent UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons will not bring about quick disarmament. It has been decried by the nuclear weapon states. But by rejecting nuclearism and providing a clear denunciation of nuclear weapons, it will challenge nuclear states in a way that has until now not been possible. Challenging nuclearism analyses the origins and repercussions of this pivotal moment in nuclear politics.
