Book excerpt: The National League of American Pen Women 2001 Soul-Making Literary Prize Winner, Honorable Mention for the work "Trigrams" Sisterly rivalries, jealousy, envy, love, and the competition for parental approval are crosscurrents that operate below the surface among four talented teen-aged sisters of the Lee family, wealthy Koreans living in 1940's Shanghai. Their family's dynamics become subsumed and greatly complicated when the communists take over China in 1949, and the Lees are forced to abandon their home. They flee to Korea, a land they have never seen. Within months the Korean War breaks out and they are swept into its maelstrom. Three days later their home is overrun. They endure forced labor at the hands of a hostile North Korean army, with the threat of violent death at any time. Again they must flee, abandoning their new home and every possession. There is no choice but to accept their loss and join the hoards of homeless refugees moving south, away from the battleground. Ultimately, they have to separate in the dead of winter to find refuge at the mercy of not always welcoming distant relatives whom they have never met. Ai-li Lee, seventeen when the book opens, is the narrator. In a simple girl's voice she relates how she, her parents and siblings struggle to survive and keep the family intact. To prevail, they faced bitter passions within and beyond their family of violent rape, betrayal, infidelity, revenge, political intrigue and murder. Desperate for guidance during their crises, Ai-li and her closest brother, Eddie, turn to the I Ching, the ancient Chinese oracle their revered grandfather had relied on in Shanghai. They hope the secrets of its trigrams will reveal their wisdom to them, too.

These sixty-four symbols contain within them one of the most powerful keys to understanding the world around us. The Secrets of the I Ching is the definitive guide to understanding the ancient mysteries and foundations of the I Ching. Authors Dr. David Lee and Joseph K. Kim guide the reader from the very beginning of Eastern thought, the concepts of Tao and Tai Chi, through the theory of Yin-Yang, Trinity, the Five Elements, and other critical concepts that will unlock the full meaning of the I Ching. Instead of simply re-interpreting the myriad of meanings ascribed to the I Ching, they focus on the symbols themselves, offering a new way of understanding its unique power. Filled with over three hundred images and backed by in-depth research and study, The Secrets of the I Ching is the ultimate guide to the I Ching and essential reading for anyone interested in exploring the power of this ancient source of wisdom and knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a series of research notes and graphical illustrations selected from the author’s amazing research work. It shows how: · The Sixty-Four hexagrams were derived by using combinatory trigrams selected from the Earlier Heaven and Later Heaven trigram cyclic sequences. · The legendary authors of the I Ching, known as Fu Hsi and King Wen, used Key Coded Matrices which enabled them to change the hexagrams of the ancient Ma-wang-tui into the Standard Modern edition. · The formulation of the Trigram Order of Completion was derived by using Knight’s Chess /binary codes and the manipulation of hexagram identification numbers. · The cyclic sequences and trigram line to line transitions were utilized to formulate the King Wen’s hexagram arrangement. · The natural numerical notation for each individual trigram was mathematically derived. · The author’s inter-face code was derived and used to determine the mathematical methodology of the Genetic Code. · Trigram lines are manipulated to form the Inner and Outer Nuclear trigrams/ hexagrams. · The Genetic Code was determined from Fu Hsi’s diagram of the derivation of the Sixty-Four hexagrams. It also includes the constructional details of an analytical model calculator which can be created from the actual design details shown within this book. This document provides the conclusive evidence that the originator(s) of the I Ching used a mathematical system which encompassed a formalistic natural philosophy that sought to embrace the entire world in a system of number symbolism. It shows the links to the ancient Indian Vedic mathematical system which reveals the relationship between the I Ching and the Binary / Genetic Codes.

Book excerpt: This unique volume presents the practical tools for architects and urban designers to improve the work processes of architectural design—from conception to construction, taking into consideration the personalized world of users, architects, and urban designers. The volume starts from the conception of architectural space as a continuum that goes from the subjective depth of the mind to the objective reality, taking into consideration the perspective of building experiences for users. It is based on the idea that at the heart of that continuum is the experience of architecture and the city as the element that unites them and gives them meaning. The volume first defines what the architectural experience is from the processes of perception, cognition, and evaluation that users and architects make about workplaces and programs. It goes on to consider the knowledge and tools needed for the evaluation of users and places, providing the methods that will help to understand the architectural experience desired by the main users of both the architectural object and an urban design, providing a series of techniques that have proven effective. Key features: Describes the theoretical approaches, methods, and tools necessary for architectural and urban design for creating experiences for users Provides a deep understanding of the nature of built environments and what they express Discusses specific methods for in-depth research on users’ subjective space through making meaningful contact with them and through appropriate technological means, such as research on their expressions and communications on virtual social networks This book will help to make urban architects and designers aware of their importance for the implementation of public policies that will work in the very long term, with the expectation that by becoming aware of this role, they can act in accordance with an ethic based on values of protection of life, human solidarity, compassion, vitality, freedom, equality between people and social justice.

Book excerpt: “Everything in the universe, from human relationships to high energy particle interactions is participating in a ceaseless process of change guided by simple, yet universal patterns. From the beginning of philosophical thought in ancient China, nearly 4000 years ago through current research in physics and molecular biology, one basic question is being posed: How do phenomena change?” (Phillips, 1992) The book "Anatomy of Change: Millennia Old Model For Navigating Change and Uncertainty" explores one of the world oldest and perhaps the most universal system developed by mankind – the I Ching, or the ancient Chinese Classic of Change – to address this question in the context of human relationships and organizational dynamics.

Book excerpt: This book presents a study of historical sociology and a comparison of ancient Greece’s and ancient China’s intellectual developments. It provides a special historical-sociological theoretical model, allowing the exploration of how and why Greece’s and China’s developments followed two different trajectories. This model allows a superior explanation of this phenomenon than previous studies, which all employ the outdated methodology of mono-causal determinism. This work takes the critique of Eurocentric views in comparative studies, pioneered by Joseph Needham in Science and Civilization in China, to a new level of excellence, because, in addition to presenting new empirical findings and dispelling previous misunderstandings, it also provides a sophisticated theoretical analysis. It will appeal to scholars and students in the fields of comparative intellectual studies, sinology, historical sociology, classics, and intellectual history.
