Book excerpt: Peopled with literary figures such as Tennyson, Trollope, Browning, George Eliot, Henry James and Virginia Woolf, this book provides Anne Thackeray Ritchie's complete journals written in 1864-65 and 1878, an ample selection of her most interesting letters and a number of significant letters written to her. Because only a third of each journal has been previously published, this collection presents a valuable document of Ritchie's inner life, especially the account of her response to her father's death.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Steps of John Bunyan: An Excursion Into Puritan England It would be as logical to transform Joan Of Arc into a hospital almoner or police-court probation Officer. Puritan preacher or Catholic saint, the prophetic Child Of nature speaks a different language from that Of the earnest educator and the trained social worker. A few critics have gone to the other extreme, for the great will always have their detractors among the small. Inspired by a com prehensible reaction against the moralists, they have endeavoured to present John Bunyan as a species Of village idiot. Book excerpt: A successor to the 1898 work "The Magna Charta Barons and Their American Descendants," the pedigrees herein are of the members of the Order of Runnemede in 1915--in effect, a second "yearbook" of the Order. Since pedigrees were dropped and added as the membership of the Order changed, this work stands by itself and does not supersede the 1898 volume. Nearly 200 pages are devoted to pedigrees of the members, which are grouped under the following names: Abbott, Allyn, Aston, Bernard, Bevan, Booth, Brooke, Bruen, Bulkeley, Byrd, Cadwalader, Calvert, Carter, Chauncey, Chichester, Claiborne, Claypool, Clayton, Daubeney, Digges, Drake, Dundas, Evans, Fauntleroy, Fenwick, Fleete, Foulke, Gordon, Gorsuch, Haynes, Henry, Humfrey, Irvine, Lambert, Lawrence, Leete, Lindsay, Lloyd, Lyman, Lynde, MacGehee, McIntosh, Montgomery, Norton, O'Carroll, Owen, Reade, Rose, Saltonstall, Scott, Sherman, Skipwith, Spotswood, Stewart, Sullivan, Throckmorton, Warren, Washington, West, Wetherill, Whiting, Wilkinson, Williams, Willis, Willoughby, Winthrop, Witherspoon, Woodhull, and Wyatt.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's moviegoers and critics generally consider some Hollywood products--even some blockbusters--to be legitimate works of art. But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie "art." Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In Hollywood Highbrow, Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. Around the same time, European ideas about the director as artist, an easing of censorship, and the development of art-house cinemas, film festivals, and the academic field of film studies encouraged the idea that some American movies--and not just European ones--deserved to be considered art.

In addition to exploring literary sources and women's contribution to electoral processes, pressure group politics are examined in depth (including Jewish civil rights and the campaigns against the Corn Laws and Indian widow-burning). The attention to neglected aspects of women's political activity, such as religion, domesticity, European nationalism, empire and lifestyle enable this book to challenge not only the historiography of Georgian and Victorian women, but also the nature of political history itself.

As artists from different countries flock to the new capital of re-unified Germany, its major museums are undergoing a massive renovation while grant programmes and inexpensive studio space are giving new talents the chance to create and display their art. Published in conjunction with a major exhibition at the Phoenix Museum of Art, this catalogue is the first comprehensive survey of the artistic renaissance of post-wall Berlin. Many of the works - which include paintings, sculpture, photography, film, installation sound and performance art - were completed in this century. In addition to colour illustrations of each of the works, this volume includes essays on the Berlin art scene, the city's recent architecture, and what the future may hold for this exciting nexus of creativity.
