Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important publication provides a comprehensive summary of data and information on the metabolism and chemical degradation of agrochemicals in soils, plants and animals. Part 1, Herbicides and Plant Growth Regulators, and Part 2, Insecticides and Fungicides, together provide a major bibliography, as each entry is fully referenced. Contents include metabolic products, pathways and mechanisms, together with useful details on physico-chemical properties and mode of action. Both parts are organised by class of chemical for easy reference. There are separate entries for each pesticide, covering most commercially available chemicals in use today. In addition, an overview of the metabolism of each major class provides the reader with an informed summary of key similarities and significant differences between individual chemicals. Information is based primarily on literature from the past 40 years of research, together with some important, previously unpublished work provided by the agrochemical companies. Presented in a systematic, easy-to-read style, with extensive indexing to facilitate the rapid location of required information and the comparison of related compounds, Metabolic Pathways of Agrochemicals is an invaluable reference for chemists, biochemists and biologists working in the discovery, development and registration of agrochemicals, as well as scientists in related areas such as design and mode of action of pharmaceuticals.

Book excerpt: Chemicals are used worldwide to protect crops and structures, manage pests, and prevent the spread of disease. While beneficial to society, these pesticides can pose human health and environmental risks. Pesticides provides a comprehensive and international collection of data concerning the substances used to repel or mitigate pests ranging from insects, animals and weeds to microorganisms. A valuable feature of this reference is its organization by functional category. The 1,844 chemical entities are divided into the following 17 functional categories: Acaricides, Algicides, Animal Repellants, Bactericides, Bird Repellants, Fungicides, Herbicides, Insecticides, Molluscicides, Nematicides, Piscicides, Plant Growth Regulators, Rodenticides, Safeners, Slimicides, Termiticides and Miscellaneous Chemicals. This compilation provides important chemical and toxicity data for the 1800 substances registered by the US Environmental Protection Agency and used largely in the agricultural environment. The chemical, physical and bioactivity properties of each agent are recorded along with a comprehensive listing of product trade names and synonyms as well as manufacturers. The EPA status of each agent is given and each record carries the appropriate CAS Registry Number and the associated EINECS Number where available. The Merck Index number is provided for all chemicals in this edition which also appear in the 13th edition of the Merck Index. Wherever possible, the following information is also displayed for each entry: melting point, boiling point, density or specific gravity, refractive index, optical rotation, ultraviolet absorption, and solubility as well as chronic and acute toxicities. A key strength of this new reference is the extensive coverage of synonyms. The book includes an index of 28,000 chemical synonyms and trade names with a cross-reference to their main entry. This extraordinarily comprehensive view of trade name and generic synonyms makes Pesticides one of the world's most exhaustive references for agricultural chemical synonyms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Toxicology of Pesticides provides an overview of the state of knowledge in the major pesticidal subject areas and describes the efforts and approaches underway in solving or understanding these problems. The book emerged from the United States-Japan seminar on ""Environmental Toxicology of Pesticides"" held in Oiso, Japan, in October 1971. The purpose of the seminar was to discuss and exchange ideas and technology on the problems associated with pesticidal contamination in these two countries. The book is organized into eight parts. Part I reviews pesticide use and contamination levels in Japan, the United States, and Britain. Part II examines the environmental impact of mercury. Part III presents studies on chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticides. Part IV examines the effects of fungicides, herbicides, organophosphates, and carbamates. Part V deals with the microbial degradation of pesticides. Part VI examines the photodecomposition of pesticides. Part VII investigates the biological effects of pesticides on wildlife. Part VIII deals with the development of new pesticides.

Book excerpt: Global pesticide use is currently estimated at approximately 2. 5 billion kg per year (Pimentel eta/. , 1998). To be effective, pesticides need to persist for a certain period of time. However, the longer their persistence, the greater the potential for transport of a fraction of the amount applied away from the target area. Pesticides are dispersed in the environment by water currents, wind, or biota. Pesticides can directly contaminate ground and surface waters by leaching, surface run-off and drift. Pesticides can also enter the atmosphere during application by evaporation and drift of small spray droplets, that remain airborne. Following application, pesticides may volatilise from the crop or the soil. Finally, wind erosion can cause soil particles and dust loaded with pesticides to enter the atmosphere. The extent to which pesticides enter the air compartment is dependent upon many factors: the properties of the substance in question (e. g. vapour pressure), the amount used, the method of application, the formulation, the weather conditions (such as wind speed, temperature, humidity), the nature of the crop and soil characteristics. Measurements at application sites reveal that sometimes more than half of the amount applied is lost into the atmosphere within a few days (Spencer and Cliath, 1990; Taylor and Spencer; 1990; Van den Berg et a/. , this issue).

The book is divided into four parts. Part 1 deals with concepts related to crop production such as soil – its classifications, mineral components, and physical properties; the benefits, problem diagnosis and system layout, and maintenance of drainage systems; the physiology, nutrition, and kinds of crops; and related problems such as weeds and diseases and their control. Part 2 is concerned with animals important in agriculture and deals with topics such as livestock feeds and the breeding, management, and meat production of cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and poultry. Part 3 discusses farm equipment such as tractors, crop sprayers, and planting machines. Part 4 tackles the management of the farming business and its staff; it also tackles laws related to agriculture and the health and safety of its personnel. The monograph is recommended for entrepreneurs in the field of agriculture, as well as those concerned in its studies and improvement.

Book excerpt: Pesticide Interactions in Crop Production: Beneficial and Deleterious Effects evaluates the effects of pesticides on plants by exploring the physical, chemical, biological, and ecological interactions of pesticides that influence a crop. The effects of pesticides on the environment and on the crop pests themselves are considered as well. Specific topics addressed include iatrogenic responses, the fate of pesticides applied to cereals under field conditions, the persistance of pesticides on target crops, the effect of pesticides on soil symbionts, and the role of ecological agriculture on conventional and organic cropping systems. Pesticide Interactions in Crop Production: Beneficial and Deleterious Effects will be an important volume for agriculturalists, phytologists, mycologists, soil biologists, plant pathologists, tropical ecologists, arboriculturalists, and other researchers interested in the effects of pesticides on crops and soil.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to assess the environmental exposure from chemicals in various media, you must know the rate at which a chemical will degrade. Handbook of Environmental Degradation Rates saves you the time and money collecting and evaluating this important information. The Handbook provides rate constant and half-life ranges for various processes and combines them into ranges for different media (air, groundwater, surface water, soils), which can be directly entered into various models. Some of the processes the Handbook includes are aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation, direct photolysis, hydrolysis, and reaction with various oxidants or free radicals (e.g., hydroxyl radical and ozone in the atmosphere). Experimental data are used and cited when available, and validated estimation methods are used when no experimental data are available. Researched and organized by leading experts, Handbook of Environmental Degradation Rates is easy-to-use and is well indexed by chemical name and CAS Number.
