Book excerpt: A charmingly illustrated, alluring biography of the florid-and pocky-cheeked, intensely blue-eyed, chin-scarred, sandpaper-throated British actor who early on played romantic leads but quickly fell into more blustery character roles. The hell-raising, hard-drinking, outsized Howard of later years was born of a Lloyds of London underwriter of whom Howard saw little, and of a mother addicted to travel and globe-hopping and who thus exposed Howard and his sister Merla to such exotic places as Ceylon and Colorado. At a loss for a profession, Howard went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, found acting to be work that fit like a glove; and has remained a dedicated professional ever since. His first ten years were spent as a stage actor, playing Sheridan, Shaw, Shakespeare, and the moderns; his first film role was as a naval officer in The Way Ahead in 1944, for Carol Reed. He is best remembered for his brilliant first starring role as the romantically beleaguered married doctor in the evergreen classic Brief Encounter (1945). Howard's gifts have been squandered in dozens of feeble films, while some of his best work remains unsung. Childless, his marriage to Helen Cherry has lasted since they first played opposite each other onstage in 1943. He is a determinedly private eccentric (and ex-hell-raiser) who never talks shop offstage. A better than average movie bio.

This interesting collection looks at the whole of British stardom from circa 1910 onwards, and the many types of British stars who gained worldwide fame through national and international cinema.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Film Industry in 25 Careers tells the history of the British film industry from an unusual perspective - that of various mavericks, visionaries and outsiders who, often against considerable odds, have become successful producers, distributors, writers, directors, editors, props masters, publicists, special effects technicians, talent scouts, stars and, sometimes, even moguls. Some, such as Richard Attenborough and David Puttnam, are well-known names. Others, such as the screenwriter and editor Alma Reville, also known as Mrs Alfred Hitchcock; Constance Smith, the 'lost star' of British cinema, or the producer Betty Box and her director sister Muriel, are far less well known. What they all have in common, though, is that they found their own pathways into the British film business, overcoming barriers of nationality, race, class and gender to do so. Counterpointing the essays on historical figures are interviews with contemporaries including the director Amma Asante, the writer and filmmaker Julian Fellowes, artist and director Isaac Julien, novelist and screenwriter Hanif Kureishi, and media entrepreneur Efe Cakarel, founder of the online film platform MUBI, who've come into today's industry, adjusting to an era in which production and releasing models are changing – and in which films are distributed digitally as well as theatrically.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fifties British cinema won large audiences with popular war films and comedies, creating stars such as Dirk Bogarde and Kay Kendall, and introducing the stereotypes of war hero, boffin and comic bureaucrat which still help to define images of British national identity. In British Cinema in the Fifties, Christine Geraghty examines some of the most popular films of this period, exploring the ways in which they approached contemporary social issues such as national identity, the end of empire, new gender roles and the care of children. Through a series of case studies on films as diverse as It Always Rains on Sunday and Genevieve, Simba and The Wrong Arm of the Law, Geraghty explores some of the key debates about British cinema and film theory, contesting current emphases on contradiction, subversion and excess and exploring the curious mix of rebellion and conformity which marked British cinema in the post-war era.

Book excerpt: This book looks at the changing image of the Indian Patriot’s war for India’s Independence and its reflection, which were shown during the Cold War period on the screens of commercial British films and TV. By using a variety of primary and secondary sources, as demonstrated by utilizing Gramsci’s theory of Common Sense/Folklore, the author traces the evolution of the Indian Patriot from a ‘villain’ to a ‘saint,’ and the British Colonials from ‘kind’ to ‘mediocre’ and even ‘evil’ personalities.

Book excerpt: A new title in Palgrave Macmillan's Literary Lives series, this is a biographical narrative of Graham Greene's literary career. Among other things, it explores his motives for writing; the literary and cinematic influences that shaped his work; his writing routine and the importance of his childhood experience. Greene was elusive and enigmatic, and this book teases out the fiction from his autobiographies, the autobiography from his fictions, sharing Paul Theroux's view that you may not know Greene from his face or speech 'but from his writing, you know everything.'

Half a century after its opening, The Third Man remains an unquestioned masterpiece of film artistry and, for many, the greatest British movie ever made. Whether it is Harry Lime's magical first appearance or the celebrated cuckoo clock speech or the climactic chase through the sewers beneath Vienna or the haunting theme music of Anton Karas, the film contains some of the most memorable moments in screen history. Drawing on both contemporary documents and accounts of the people involved, In Search of The Third Man explores the many myths that over the years have grown around this extraordinary film, and seeks to unravel the facts from the fiction. "...you'll want to read The Third Man...The story of the film's creation is as intriguing as the film itself" Leonard Maltin, Playboy
