Book excerpt: Social policy is under pressure in OECD countries because of concerns about public finances and changing works and family patterns. Over recent decades, social protection systems have successfully provided individual and families in need with income support and access to services. But policies which worked well when they were first introduced, sometimes 50 years ago, may now be protecting the wrong people against the wrong risks. How can labor market and social exclusion be tackled? How can we help those with low skills to get jobs and generate incomes to meet the needs of their families? How can we broaden the sources of income for those who are retired and ensure that those requiring long-term care services receive the right package of care? This book examines new policy strategies intended to protect people against distress over the life cycle. These strategies need to be equitable while promoting economic efficiency.

Book excerpt: The family has been a fundamental social institution throughout the history of mankind. But in recent decades it seemed to be eroding on virtually all fronts: fewer marriages and children and also far greater instability. But quite unexpectedly, the family seems now to be on the rebound. In some societies, the reversal is very clear: the number of children citizens have is approaching the number that they actually desire, the propensity to marry is rising, and partnerships are becoming more stable. The return-to-family trend is very much driven by the well-educated, and less stable partnerships are increasingly concentrated among the less educated. There are indeed strong indications that the world of families is becoming ever more polarized. How can we explain the (uneven) turnaround? This book presents a new theoretical framework for understanding the dynamics of contemporary family life. The key lies in how and to what extent both partnerships and society at large manage to adapt successfully to the altered economic role of women. The analyses which follow demonstrate that the more successful is the adaptation, the more we shall see a return to stronger and more stable families. And this will in turn have positive effects for childrens life chances and social mobility prospects. --

Book Synopsis Sourcebook of Family Theories and Methods by : Pauline Boss
Download or read book Sourcebook of Family Theories and Methods written by Pauline Boss and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-19 with total page 747 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Origins We call this book on theoretical orientations and methodological strategies in family studies a sourcebook because it details the social and personal roots (i.e., sources) from which these orientations and strategies flow. Thus, an appropriate way to preface this book is to talk first of its roots, its beginnings. In the mid 1980s there emerged in some quarters the sense that it was time for family studies to take stock of itself. A goal was thus set to write a book that, like Janus, would face both backward and forward a book that would give readers both a perspec tive on the past and a map for the future. There were precedents for such a project: The Handbook of Marriage and the Family edited by Harold Christensen and published in 1964; the two Contemporary Theories about theFamily volumes edited by Wesley Burr, Reuben Hill, F. Ivan Nye, and Ira Reiss, published in 1979; and the Handbook of Marriage and the Family edited by Marvin Sussman and Suzanne Steinmetz, then in production.
