Book excerpt: This book is the proceedings of the 9th International Symposium on Foundations of Quantum Mechanics in the Light of New Technology (ISQM?TOKYO'08) which aims to link the recent advances in technology with fundamental problems in quantum mechanics. It also discusses fundamental problems and issues in quantum physics and places a special emphasis on ?Quantum Coherence and Decoherence?.The proceedings included a special lecture by Prof C N Yang, ?Pseudopotential Method in Cold Atom Research?, and 75 refereed papers covering the wide range of quantum physics: cold atoms and molecules; spin-Hall effect and anomalous Hall effect; magnetic domain wall dynamics and spin-related phenomena; Dirac fermions in condensed matter; quantum dot systems; entanglement and quantum information processing, qubit manipulations; mechanical properties of confined geometry; precise measurements; novel properties of nano-systems; and fundamental problems in quantum physics. The book will not only serve as a good reference for experts on quantum coherence and decoherence, but also as an introduction for newcomers to this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates two possibilities for describing classical-mechanical physical systems along with their Hamiltonian dynamics in the framework of quantum mechanics. The first possibility consists in exploiting the geometrical properties of the set of quantum pure states of "microsystems" and of the Lie groups characterizing the specific classical system. The second approach is to consider quantal systems of a large number of interacting subsystems – i.e. macrosystems, so as to study the quantum mechanics of an infinite number of degrees of freedom and to look for the behaviour of their collective variables. The final chapter contains some solvable models of “quantum measurement" describing dynamical transitions from "microsystems" to "macrosystems".

Book excerpt: This volume gives a representative survey of recent developments in relativistic and non-relativistic quantum theory, which are related to the application of symmetries in their most general sense. The corresponding mathematical notions are centered upon groups, algebras and their generalizations, and are applied in interaction with topology, differential geometry, functional analysis and related fields. Special emphasis is on results in the following areas: quantization methods, nonlinear evolution equations, foundation of quantum physics, algebraic quantum field theory, gauge and string theories, quantum information, quantum groups, discrete symmetries.

In spite of his insatiable hunger for battles and expansion, he is remembered as an important statesman. Book excerpt: Physically Unclonable Functions (PUFs) translate unavoidable variations in certain parameters of materials, waves, or devices into random and unique signals. They have found many applications in the Internet of Things (IoT), authentication systems, FPGA industry, several other areas in communications and related technologies, and many commercial products. Statistical Trend Analysis of Physically Unclonable Functions first presents a review on cryptographic hardware and hardware-assisted cryptography. The review highlights PUF as a mega trend in research on cryptographic hardware design. Afterwards, the authors present a combined survey and research work on PUFs using a systematic approach. As part of the survey aspect, a state-of-the-art analysis is presented as well as a taxonomy on PUFs, a life cycle, and an established ecosystem for the technology. In another part of the survey, the evolutionary history of PUFs is examined, and strategies for further research in this area are suggested. In the research side, this book presents a novel approach for trend analysis that can be applied to any technology or research area. In this method, a text mining tool is used which extracts 1020 keywords from the titles of the sample papers. Then, a classifying tool classifies the keywords into 295 meaningful research topics. The popularity of each topic is then numerically measured and analyzed over the course of time through a statistical analysis on the number of research papers related to the topic as well as the number of their citations. The authors identify the most popular topics in four different domains; over the history of PUFs, during the recent years, in top conferences, and in top journals. The results are used to present an evolution study as well as a trend analysis and develop a roadmap for future research in this area. This method gives an automatic popularity-based statistical trend analysis which eliminates the need for passing personal judgments about the direction of trends, and provides concrete evidence to the future direction of research on PUFs. Another advantage of this method is the possibility of studying a whole lot of existing research works (more than 700 in this book). This book will appeal to researchers in text mining, cryptography, hardware security, and IoT.

Book excerpt: This book presents the latest results in the most fundamental field of quantum state preparation and control. At this unique conference researchers, both from the academic and industrial world, presented their work. A variety of crucial experiments under controlled, novel conditions, and theoretical checks from novel points of view are reported. Highlighted are new schemes for quantum interference, single particle behaviour, gravitational waves, electron holography and semiconductor microlasers. Containing all the recent results available in the field, this volume points the direction for further experimental and theoretical work in the foundations of physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together the primary challenges for 21st century cognitive sciences and cultural neuroscience in responding to the nature of human identity, self, and evolution of life itself. Through chapters devoted to intricate but focused models, empirical findings, theories, and experiential data, the contributors reflect upon the most exciting possibilities, and debate upon the fundamental aspects of consciousness and self in the context of cultural, philosophical, and multidisciplinary divergences and convergences. Such an understanding and the ensuing insights lie in the cusp of philosophy, neurosciences, psychiatry, and medical humanities. In this volume, the editors and contributors explore the foundations of human thinking and being and discuss both evolutionary/cultural embeddedness, and the self-orientation, of consciousness, keeping in mind questions that bring in the interdisciplinary complexity of issues such as the emergence of consciousness, relation between healing and agency, models of altered self, how cognition impacts the social self, experiential primacy as the hallmark of consciousness, and alternate epistemologies to understand these interdisciplinary puzzles.
