Book excerpt: A 1996-97 national survey of elementary and secondary schools investigated current patterns and shifts in foreign language enrollment, languages and programs offered, teaching methodologies, teacher qualifications and training, and reactions to national reform issues. An introductory section of the survey report offers background information on this and several previous surveys. The second section outlines key questions to be addressed by the present study. A third section is devoted to explanation of the research methodology used and a demographic profile of the sample surveyed. The bulk of the report is devoted to a summary of results, including numerical data, concerning: number of schools teaching foreign languages; interest in offering language instruction; language enrollment; languages taught; program types; grade levels and minutes per week (elementary schools); levels offered and hours per week (secondary schools); class scheduling during the school day; funding sources (elementary schools); schools having curriculum frameworks or guidelines; sources of language curricula; instructional materials; sequencing/articulation; number of language teachers; teacher qualifications; staff development/inservice training; foreign language use in the classroom (secondary schools); schools' characterizations of their programs; assessment; and standards for language learning. With this awareness has come the realization that we need foreign languages in the building of international understanding. Once this need was recognized, our educators acted without delay. Latest estimates indicate that by the end of the school year 1952-1953 about one hundred communities in some thirty states were conducting foreign language programs in one or more public elementary schools. This little book is a study of this rapidly developing trend. - Foreword.

Book excerpt: Language teaching approaches, methods and procedures are constantly undergoing reassessment. New ideas keep emerging as the growing complexity of the means of communication and the opportunities created by technology put language skills to new uses. In addition, the political, social and economic impact of globalisation, the new demands of the labour market that result from it, the pursuit of competitiveness, the challenges of intercultural communication and the diversification of culture have opened new perspectives on the central role that foreign languages have come to play in the development of contemporary societies. This book provides an insight into the latest developments in the field and discusses the new trends in foreign language teaching in four major areas, namely methods and approaches, teacher training, innovation in the classroom, and evaluation and assessment.

Book Synopsis Critical Issues in Foreign Language Instruction by : Ellen S. Silber
Download or read book Critical Issues in Foreign Language Instruction written by Ellen S. Silber and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1991. This is Volume 22 of the Source Books on Education series. Politically speaking the study of foreign languages and cultures helps maintain a strong competitive position in an increasingly global marketplace. It was hard to imagine in 1957 that the launching of a Soviet rocket would push the United States into its greatest investment ever in foreign language education. As American policy-makers attempted to play catch-up with our brothers and sisters behind the iron curtain, this country infused federal dollars into extensive foreign language teacher training and the creation of new foreign language educational programs. As suddenly as federal support was given, however, so was it taken away; and its withdrawal was responsible for one of the darkest periods in the history of foreign language education in America. Drawing on the expertise of a number of the nation's most experienced and creative foreign language educators, this volume, edited by Ellen S. Silber, addresses some of the crucial problems we face in foreign language education today.

Download or read book Foreign Language Education in America written by Steven Berbeco and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign language teaching in America today falls into three distinct fields of influence and interest: public and private schools, college and other post-secondary programs, and courses for adult learners. At a time when academics and instructors in each of these fields seek to answer similar questions, too few published resources recognize and address the parallels among them. In response, Foreign Language Education in America is an edited book with contributions that represent the diversity in foreign language education today, including perspectives from elementary, middle schools, high schools, university-level courses, summer programs, federal government, and international learning. This is a practical guide to the state of the field that fills a much-needed gap for scholars, researchers, administrators, and practitioners who are looking for a resource that describes effective practices across the field.

The Essentials of World Languages, Grades K-12 answers this question and many more as it shows us * Why world languages must be positioned as an essential part of a balanced curriculum and why the time is right for implementing change. * When language instruction should begin and how language instruction should be delivered and assessed. * How to redefine the role of the teacher and curriculum coordinator in language learning. * How to set realistic expectations for students' second-language proficiency. * How to design curriculum using assessment targets. Packed with information about major trends and issues in world language education, this book offers valuable curriculum resources to help educators design and implement flexible language programs that prepare children to live and work in an interconnected, global culture.
