Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 1976 the research seminar 'Decision-making in business' was organized at Nijenrode, The Netherlands School of Business. More than fifty scientists and practitioners from nine countries presented research papers in one of the six discussion groups. Some ofthem also presented some of their ideas in front of a large mixed audience at a one-day symposium. Many of the papers presented at Nijenrode were of such a high quality that the decision to publish a selection of them was an easy one. At the same time the new series Nijenrode studies in business was initiated. All who were involved, the policy committee 'Of the Nijenrode studies, the advisory and editorial board of the series, the publisher, and the organizing committee of the seminar and symposium, acclaimed the idea of publishing three volumes in the new series. A collection of eleven papers could be grouped under the title Trends in managerial andfinancial accounting, and has been published as volume 1 of this series. A collection of fourteen papers has been published as the second volume under the title Trends in financial decision making, while this volume, consisting of twelve papers (and an introduction) explores the theme Trends in business ethics. The introduction by Stanley L. Jakiwas written for the symposium. It suggests why the papers of Pjotr Hesseling, Antoine Kreykamp, and Richard H. Viola, which were not presented at Nijenrode, are introduced here.

Lord Eatwell considers the ethical foundations of the market economy. Mark Casson analyses the economic importance of leaders, while Simon Deakin and Frank Wilkinson empirically examine the role of contractual obligation in the UK. Adrian Cadbury and Norman Barry examine voluntary institutions and government's importance in setting ethics. Maurie Cohen and Russell Sparkes look at the ethical consumers and ethical investors increasing influence on business conduct. Finally Clive Wright and Neil Hood examine the internal organisation of national and transnational firms which increasingly build an ethical dimension into their corporate decision making.

Book excerpt: This book, the second of two volumes, is inspired by the famous philosopher of India, Kautilya, author of the first book on economics in the world, Arthashashtra. It analyzes the influence of ethical values from ancient societies on modern systems of management and economics. While this book deals with the “global sages” like Aristotle, Buddha, Jesus, the scope is also expanded to incorporate other notable modern thinkers like Karl Marx, Adam Smith, and Rabindranath Tagore. This book aims to highlight the interrelationships between ethics and management, both from a micro and macroeconomics, as well as organizational and national, perspective. It will be useful for those interested in history, economics, development studies, international relations, and global politics.

Book excerpt: Cultural differences among nations are being recognized as critically important for the corporate social responsibility (CSR) agendas of multinational companies. For this reason, the past few years have shown an increase in comparative studies seeking to identify the role played by cultural dimensions in CSR engagement, performances, and communications. Linking Cultural Dimensions and CSR Communication: Emerging Research and Opportunities is a collection of innovative research on evaluating how cultural dimensions, reflected in CSR content embedded on corporate websites, vary between the Asian context and the other countries in the world and considering how these factors affect societies and business ethics. While highlighting topics including business ethics, corporate philanthropy, and stakeholder engagement, this book is ideally designed for managers, business professionals, academicians, and researchers.

Book excerpt: Ethics in business is not a new topic and has been intensely discussed since the emergence of the so-called limited companies. However, privatization, technological and digital innovation, changes in moral perception, economic and financial crises and globalization stir a more recent debate on how companies should behave in our societies. This book starts from the position that ethics in business should imply an open debate on norms and values, using a sound methodology to get there. Ethics should cross borders: not only the borders of a country, but also the borders of someone’s moral imagination. Ethics should not only be about harmony but also about conflict (and how to deal with that). Ethics should be realistic and well substantiated by academic research. Ethics should be used to understand the complexity of the world, and the challenges companies struggle with on various levels. Therefore, this book is composed of three parts in which ethics is discussed at different levels. In part one we discuss ethics at the level of the individual. In part two we discuss ethics and business. In the third part, ethics is discussed in the context of a globalized world. In each chapter, we discuss the ethical complications of each topic from various – and preferably opposing – perspectives. Each perspective is methodologically and academically substantiated. Each chapter ends with an extensive literature list in which the original sources are listed for further reading. Furthermore, at the end of each chapter, a summary is written in which the most important definitions and viewpoints are highlighted. The frequent use of colorful and bold examples make this an accessible read for bachelor and master students at business schools and professionals in international business.

Book excerpt: This book presents an integration of the analysis of symbo- lic, ethical, and cultural meaning into the theory of econo- mic action. It demontrates that the scope of economics is widened by the inclusion of the cultural and ethical determinants of economic action and by bringing the ethical and cultural factors back into economics and management science. The book's contribution to business ethics and economic ethics lies in its distinctly continental European background which is often overlooked in current discussions of economic theory. The papers in this volume point to a mutual interpenetration of economics and ethics in a new synthesis of "ethical economy".

Book excerpt: This book is the first of its kind – a global overview of extant research on ethics in small and medium sized enterprises. While vast amounts of corporate money, government policy and media time are directed at the social and ethical activities of large corporations, small businesses don’t generally attract the spotlight. This is wildly inappropriate, however, since upward of 90% of private businesses are small or medium sized. This book goes some way to helping us understand the social and ethical contribution of this majority organizational form. The first section of the book is a global round-up of research on ethics in small and medium sized enterprises from major regions of the world. In the second section smaller scale research projects from a variety of countries present both empirical and theoretical advances in the area. Anyone with an interest in ethics and small and medium sized enterprises should find this an inspiring book which paves the way for future research.
