Book Synopsis The International Steel Industry by : Ray Hudson
Download or read book The International Steel Industry written by Ray Hudson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-16 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1989. The international steel industry suffered a major decline after the onset of world recession in 1973, perhaps suffering more plant closures and job losses than any other sector. This book analyses the decline, surveying the various factors which have contributed to it, such as changing production strategies, changes in demand and world trade and changing regional production trends. It goes on to examine the impact of decline on steel-making communities, considering the various local, national and international initiatives to assist the affected areas and the way these initiatives have been devised and implemented. The authors conclude that none of these policies has satisfactorily resolved the crisis in the old steel producing areas and that a major crisis in these areas continues. Finally they discuss the social and political options open to these localities for the future.

An industrial transformation of this magnitude has inevitably given rise to efforts to identify its underlying causes. This book is a contribution to that effort.
Book Synopsis Recent Social Trends in West Germany, 1960-1990 by : Wolfgang Glatzer
Download or read book Recent Social Trends in West Germany, 1960-1990 written by Wolfgang Glatzer and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1992 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume in the invaluable reference series Comparative Charting of Social Change examines social trends in West Germany during the period between 1960 and 1990. This was a special phase of German history: the Federal Republic of Germany was founded in 1949, and by 1960 the main disturbances of the Second World War had been overcome. The next thirty years saw relatively stable development in democratic institutions, economic wealth, and the welfare state. This process, however, was not entirely without difficulties. Environmental conditions deteriorated and unemployment grew, especially in the 1980s. A new, reunified Germany replaced the "old" FRG in 1990, ushering in a fundamentally different social structure.
