Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 2004, after one year of intense debate, CMCS, the International Workshop on Coalgebraic Methods in Computer Science, and WADT, the Workshop on Al- braic Development Techniques, decided to join their forces and reputations into a new high-level biennial conference. CALCO, the Conference on Algebra and Co- gebra in Computer Science, was created to bring together researchers and practit- ners to exchange new results related to foundational aspects, and both traditional and emerging uses of algebras and coalgebras in computer science. A steering committee was put together by merging those of CMCS and WADT: Jiri Adamek, Ataru Na- gawa, Michel Bidoit, José Fiadeiro (co-chair), Hans-Peter Gumm, Bart Jacobs, Hans- Jörg Kreowski, Ugo Montanari, Larry Moss, Peter Mosses, Fernando Orejas, Fr- cesco Parisi-Presicce, John Power, Horst Reichel, Markus Roggenbach, Jan Rutten (co-chair), and Andrzej Tarlecki. CALCO 2005 was the first instance of this new conference. The interest that it generated in the scientific community suggests that it will not be the last. Indeed, it attracted as many as 62 submissions covering a wide range of topics roughly divided into two areas: Algebras and Coalgebras as Mathematical Objects: Automata and languages; categorical semantics; hybrid, probabilistic, and timed systems; inductive and co- ductive methods; modal logics; relational systems and term rewriting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume constitutes the proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Theorem Proving in Higher Order Logics (TPHOLs 2001) held 3–6 September 2001 in Edinburgh, Scotland. TPHOLs covers all aspects of theorem proving in higher order logics, as well as related topics in theorem proving and veri?cation. TPHOLs 2001 was collocated with the 11th Advanced Research Working Conference on Correct Hardware Design and Veri?cation Methods (CHARME 2001). This was held 4–7 September 2001 in nearby Livingston, Scotland at the Institute for System Level Integration, and a joint half-day session of talks was arranged for the 5th September in Edinburgh. An excursion to Traquair House and a banquet in the Playfair Library of Old College, University of Edinburgh were also jointly organized. The proceedings of CHARME 2001 have been p- lished as volume 2144 of Springer-Verlag’s Lecture Notes in Computer Science series, with Tiziana Margaria and Tom Melham as editors. Each of the 47 papers submitted in the full research category was refereed by at least 3 reviewers who were selected by the Program Committee. Of these submissions, 23 were accepted for presentation at the conference and publication in this volume. In keeping with tradition, TPHOLs 2001 also o?ered a venue for the presentation of work in progress, where researchers invite discussion by means of a brief preliminary talk and then discuss their work at a poster session. A supplementary proceedings containing associated papers for work in progress was published by the Division of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive introduction to automata theory that uses the novel approach of viewing automata as data structures. This textbook presents automata theory from a fresh viewpoint inspired by its main modern application, program verification, where automata are viewed as data structures for the algorithmic manipulation of sets and relations. This novel “automata as data structures” paradigm makes holistic connections between automata theory and other areas of computer science not covered in traditional texts, linking the study of algorithms and data structures with that of the theory of formal languages and computability. Esparza and Blondin provide incisive overviews of core concepts along with illustrated examples and exercises that facilitate quick comprehension of rigorous material. Uses novel “automata as data structures” approach Algorithm approach ideal for programmers looking to broaden their skill set and researchers in automata theory and formal verification The first introduction to automata on infinite words that does not assume prior knowledge of finite automata Suitable for both undergraduate and graduate students Thorough, engaging presentation of concepts balances description, examples, and theoretical results Extensive illustrations, exercises, and solutions deepen comprehension

Being essentially a software activity, it has been successfully applied, e.g. for optimization and machine learning in various areas. The tremendous increase in computational power and, more recently, the appearance of a new generation of programmable logic devices allow for a new approach to designing computing machines inspired by biological models: it is now possible to make the hardware itself evolve. This book is based on a workshop on evolvable hardware, held in Lausanne, Switzerland, in October 1995. It reports the state of the art of research in this field and presents two introductory chapters, written with the novice reader in mind.

Book excerpt: The 7th International Conference on Implementation and Application of Au- mata (CIAA 2002) was held at the Universit ́ e Fran ̧ cois Rabelais of Tours, in Tours, France, on July 3–5, 2002. This volume of Lecture Notes in Computer Science contains all the papers that were presented at CIAA 2002, as well as the abstracts of the poster papers that were displayed during the conference. The conference addressed issues in automata application and implemen- tion. Thetopicsofthepaperspresentedinthisconferencerangedfromautomata applications in software engineering, natural language and speech recognition, and image processing, to new representations and algorithms for e?cient imp- mentation of automata and related structures. Automata theory is one of the oldest areas in computer science. Research in automata theory has always been motivated by its applications since its early stage of development. In the 1960s and 1970s, automata research was motivated heavily by problems arising from compiler construction, circuit design, string matching, etc. In recent years, many new applications of automata have been found in various areas of computer science as well as in other disciplines. - amples of the new applications include statecharts in object-oriented modeling, ?nite transducers in natural language processing, and nondeterministic ?ni- state models in communication protocols. Many of the new applications cannot simply utilize the existing models and algorithms in automata theory in the - lution to their problems. New models, or modi?cations of the existing models, are needed to satisfy their requirements.
