Book Synopsis Carbon Sequestration in Urban Ecosystems by : Rattan Lal
Download or read book Carbon Sequestration in Urban Ecosystems written by Rattan Lal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-10 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urbanization drastically alters the ecosystems structure and functions, disrupts cycling of C and other elements along with water. It alters the energy balance and influences climate at local, regional and global scales. In 2008, urban population exceeded the rural population. In 2050, 70% of the world population will live in urban centers. The number of megacities (10 million inhabitants) increased from three in 1975 to 19 in 2007, and is projected to be 27 in 2025. Rapid urbanization is altering the ecosystem C budget. Yet, urban ecosystems have a large C sink capacity in soils and biota. Judicious planning and effective management can enhance C pool in urban ecosystems, and off-set some of the anthropogenic emissions. Principal components with regards to C sequestration include home lawns and turfs, urban forests, green roofs, park and recreational/sports facilities and urban agriculture.
Book Synopsis Tropical Community Tree Guide by : Kelaine E. Vargas
Download or read book Tropical Community Tree Guide written by Kelaine E. Vargas and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even as they increase the beauty of our surroundings, trees provide us with a great many ecosystem services, incl. air quality improvement, energy conservation, stormwater interception, and carbon dioxide reduction. These benefits must be weighed against the costs of maintaining trees, including planting, pruning, irrigation, admin., pest control, liability, cleanup, and removal. This report presents benefits and costs for representative small, medium, and large trees in the Tropical region based on research carried out in Honolulu, Hawaii. Average annual net benefits increase with tree size and differ based on location:. Two hypothetical examples of planting projects are described to illustrate how the data in this guide can be adapted to local uses.

Book Synopsis Urban Forestry by : Robert W. Miller
Download or read book Urban Forestry written by Robert W. Miller and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2015-04-06 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fully updated and greatly enhanced, the Third Edition of Urban Forestry addresses current issues in planning, establishing, and managing trees, forests, and other elements of nature in urban and community ecosystems. The authors discuss why we have trees in cities and how we use them, clarify the appraisal and inventory of urban vegetation, and extensively delve into the planning and management of public as well as private vegetation. As urban forestry continues to evolve as a profession, foresters and arborists can expect many challenges as well as opportunities. The continuing development of cities has become linked to a much greater emphasis on urban vegetation, the growing demand for recreation amenities within the urban environment, and the careful and successful management of vegetation in an urban ecosystem. New ways to incorporate the highly versatile urban forest resource into the urban fabric will undoubtedly benefit the lives of its residents.

Book Synopsis Los Angeles 1-Million Tree Canopy Cover Assessment by : E. Gregory McPherson
Download or read book Los Angeles 1-Million Tree Canopy Cover Assessment written by E. Gregory McPherson and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Million Trees LA initiative intends to chart a course for sustainable growth through planting and stewardship of trees. This study measures LA's existing tree canopy cover (TCC), determines if space exists for 1 million additional trees, and estimates future benefits from the planting. Benefits were forecast for planting of 1 million trees between 2006 and 2010, and their growth and mortality were projected until 2040. LA's existing TCC was 21%. There is potential to add 2.5 million additional trees to the existing population of 10.8 million, but only 1.3 million of the potential tree sites are deemed realistic to plant. Thus, there is space for planting 1 million new trees. Benefits for the 1-million-tree planting were between $1.33 band $1.95 billion.

Book Synopsis Softwood Tree Volume Equations for Major California Species (Classic Reprint) by : Colin D. Maclean

This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Softwood Tree Volume Equations for Major California Species Although the size of our sample was more than adequate, the reader should be aware of some important data deficiencies. First, two - thirds of the sample was drawn from trees measured many years ago. While we recognized the danger of bias inherent in the use of old data, that risk seemed preferable to relying on a much smaller sample with a limited geographical distribution. Second, we were unable to find measured-tree data from the Coast Ranges or, more impor tant, for trees under inches in diameter breast high. In the case of California red fir, all our sample trees were over 14 inches. This lack of small-tree data posed a particular problem in developing cubic-foot equations, since volumes were needed for all trees inches and larger. We were forced to extrapolate, using comparisons of existing tables as a guide to reasonable ness. Finally, our sample data for lodgepole pine and incenscedar were limited-26 trees of the former species and 46 of the latter-and confined to the southern Sierra Nevada. In spite of these scanty data, we decided to develop volume equations for both species, as an alternative preferable to using equations developed for some other Species.
