In addition, the farm lanes can be lined advantageously with fruit or nut-bearing trees that will bring money to their owner and add to the attractive appearance of his surroundings. Objections may be made in some localities to placing trees along a public road, because their shade would tend to make it wet and muddy. If such conditions exist, the fault is in the road, and not in the trees; there are some very muddy highways along which nothing has been planted. Although a row of trees may retard somewhat the evaporation of moisture at the surface of the roadbed, at the same time they drain its foundation by the rapid absorption of water through their roots. When a roadbed is properly constructed, drained and ditched, the trees will do no harm; on the contrary, they will furnish a grateful shade to the traveler, and prevent dust without creating mud. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Tree Planting in the Plains The experimental plantings herein described in detail are given not only as a record Of the beginnings Of an important work, but as indi cating what are believed to be useful mixtures Of trees for planting in the West. Sufficient time has not elapsed, even in the Oldest plantings described, for final conclusions to be drawn; but the notes on kinds will be found of interest in connection with the experiments, and the whole is believed to afford a basis for selection Of trees for the various States included in the treeless area. While this bulletin has to do primarily with Western planting, it may be found a safe guide in many directions for forest planting within the timbered regions Of the country, especially as to general principles involved. Experiments in planting in cut-over lands in the pineries Of Minnesota and Pennsylvania have been begun by the Department, but are not yet sufficiently advanced to warrant even a progress report. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tree Planting on Rural School Grounds A great number of schoolhouses in the United States lack the sur roundings that make for comfort and contentment. City school grounds are often so small that planting is out of the question, though, where Space permits, it is not uncommon to find them carefully laid out, with a good arrangement of grass plots, flower beds, and shade trees. In towns and villages, also, may be pointed out many exam ples showing great care and attention. In the country, however, an improved school ground is rarely found. In hilly, forest regions they are often denuded of soil and full of stones and stumps, and on the prairie many are well-nigh as bare, bleak, and inhospitable as when they formed a part of the unsettled plain. The indigenous forests are unable to meet the domestic requirements of the Colony; they have constantly decreased rather than increased, and as they are in great measure in private ownership this is likely to continue. Even the enormous imports of foreign timber which have arrived during recent years have done little towards saving what remains of the forests; the Colony and its hinterland have developed with corresponding rapidity, fresh demands have arisen, and the only salvation for the indigenous timber is the fact that it is not standing in the forest already planed and grooved as the imported material arrives. Because of the comparatively short life of some species of trees used and because of hard conditions under which shade trees often grow, we are now in a period in which the shade trees planted or left standing by early Illinois settlers are rapidly deteriorating and are dying in large numbers. There is always an interest in the planting of new trees in new places, but we must not fail to recognize the heritage in trees left us by the early settlers. We have a definite obligation to care for the old trees to make them last as long as we can, to replant where old trees have died, or start replacements where the old trees are sure to die, and to set out new trees as cities progress and as new farmsteads are built. Let me give, as an introduction to this one, the reply made by the photographer (Mr. Frank Sutcliffe) to a friend who met him one evening when returning from the plantations at Mulgrave. On being asked, "What fields he had been making conquests in?" the answer was, "I have been taking some photographs for a gentleman who is going to do away with the 'north wind.'" This, the reader will understand, expresses my intention, to a certain extent, in a few words. It is an endeavour to show how the evils may be mitigated which are wrought upon vegetation of all kinds, not only by the north and east winds along the eastern coast, which are most destructive, but also upon every part of the shores of the British Isles, which are exposed to strong gales and storms.
