Book excerpt: Originally published in 1984 and written by renowned authorities in the field, this detailed guide shows how to effectively organize, implement, and manage large scale tree-improvement programs. It describes the genetic and silvicultural principles and practical procedures that apply to beginning, established and advanced-generation tree improvement programs. Dr. Zobel is a renowned forester. He has received many awards and honors for his leadership role in advancing forest tree improvement. He arrived at North Carolina State University to lead the new Cooperative Tree Improvement Program in 1956 and retired from the program in 1979. More than two decades later, he keeps regular office hours on campus. Students from across the globe have traveled to study in the forestry department under Dr. Zobel. Dr. Zobel is a North Carolina State University distinguished Professor of Forestry and has published hundreds of articles pertaining to tree improvement and tropical forestry. After retiring as director of the cooperative, Dr. Zobel founded Zobel Forestry Associates, an international forestry consulting firm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest tree improvement has mainly been implemented to enhance the productivity of artificial forests. However, given the drastically changing global environment, improvement of various traits related to environmental adaptability is more essential than ever. This book focuses on genetic information, including trait heritability and the physiological mechanisms thereof, which facilitate tree improvement. Nineteen papers are included, reporting genetic approaches to improving various species, including conifers, broad-leaf trees, and bamboo. All of the papers in this book provide cutting-edge genetic information on tree genetics and suggest research directions for future tree improvement.

Book excerpt: Three tree improvement programs were analyzed by break-even, cost-benefit technique: one for ponderosa pine in the Pacific Northwest, and two for Douglas-fir in the Pacific Northwest-one of low intensity and the other of high intensity. A return of 8 percent on investment appears feasible by using short rotations or by accompanying tree improvement with thinning. Interest rates, length of rotation, the inclusion of thinnings, and site index had greater effects on profitability than program design. Large breeding zones improved profitability, although they incur the biological risks of nonadaptation to local conditions and loss of local genetic resources. Increasing orchard seed yield affected the results only slightly unless the planting program could be expanded, which is equivalent to increasing the size of the breeding zone. If the increase in seed yield merely reduced the required acreage of seed orchard and associated costs, the financial results improved only slightly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book integrates the latest global developments in forestry science and practice and their relevance for the sustainable management of tropical forests. The influence of social dimensions on the development of silvicultural concepts is another spotlight. Ecology and silvicultural options form all tropical continents, and forest formations from dry to moist forests and from lowland to mountain forests are covered. Review chapters which guide readers through this complex subject integrate numerous illustrative and quantitative case studies by experts from all over the world. On the basis of a cross-sectional evaluation of the case studies presented, the authors put forward possible silvicultural contributions towards sustainability in a changing world. The book is addressed to a broad readership from forestry and environmental disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest tree breeding has been ongoing for more than 70 years across Europe. It has successfully generated improved varieties for the major economical forest tree species. They are part of the present European forestry landscape and largely contribute to intensive wood production and other forest activities. In this book, we describe the state-of-art of breeding for the main forest tree species. We provide a comprehensive, unique and up-to-date overview of the major scientific results and breeding achievements gathered from the many programmes scattered across Europe. The book is divided into 10 chapters, each as a monograph corresponding to a species or group of species Abies spp., (Larix spp., Picea abies, Picea sitchensis, Pinus sylvestris, Pseudotsuga menziesii, and Mediterranean pines; Acer pseudoplatanus, Fraxinus excelsior, and Prunus avium). Each of them is written by a group of experts and focuses on the distribution and economical importance of the species; motivation for breeding and breeding objectives; intraspecific genetic variability, breeding populations and breeding strategy; forest reproductive material deployment including mass-propagation and, prospects and perspectives for joint research and breeding. The book is a unique and up-dated source of information for students, researchers and professionals interested in the genetics and domestication of forest tree species.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provided here are both underlying theory and recent results concerning the propagation and use of clones in research and in production forestry. State-of-the-art science and case histories treating production, testing, multiplication and deployment of clones are presented. Agroforestry, urban forestry and christmas-tree farming are covered, along with more traditional multiple-use forestry and high-intensity forestry for biomass, wood and fiber production. Clonal forestry is contrasted to the more recent developments of "family forestry", and the classical tree-improvement approach relying on seed-orchards. The history of clonal forestry is covered with reviews of several centuries experience with Sugi in Japan and poplars in Europe. The impacts and use of clones in the contexts of genetic conservation and biodiversity are discussed, as are the laws and regulations affecting clonal production and deployment.
