I Wrote It On A Fence Too: Noah Fence is the second half of the I Wrote It On A Fence series of books. It contains more dark poetry, continuing to try to get over the pain of the past, including new offences that need to be dealt with. Physical and mental pain is agony, but it makes for decent poetry. Using the pain creatively is how the poems in this book came to be.

Book excerpt: At fifteen, Sanford Brunson Campbell (1884-1952) became enchanted with the new sounds of ragtime and ran away from his rural Kansas home, hopping a train to Sedalia, Missouri, determined to take piano lessons from a black musician he had never met. Scott Joplin nicknamed his white protege "The Ragtime Kid." A composer and entertainer at the dawn of the ragtime era, "Brun" was a prime mover in the ragtime revival of the 1940s and helped establish Joplin's prominence as one of America's most innovative composers. Campbell's own legacy was tarnished by his inability to tell a straight story and he was often dismissed as a liar and a clown. Based on his memoirs, musical compositions and correspondence with music industry notables, this first comprehensive biography of Campbell reveals an engaging storyteller and a devotee wholly dedicated to a musical genre that had been largely forgotten. His firsthand account of life as an itinerant pianist in the Midwest provides a unique picture of life a century ago.

Book excerpt: Seven unusual, distinctive, sometimes passionate stories appearing unrelated will give you a new perspective of the modern Olympics. From the views of the athletes, the spectators, the reporters, the coaches, or the administratorsdiscover what the Olympics could be in the future. Dare to jump into a new life with novel perspectives and hopes, or lack thereof. Will our lives be so different? Will our goals and ambitions be altered? What will we live for? What will be driving us? Is the Olympics then of any value, protecting us from complacency, boredom? Or does it prevent us from moving to a higher consciousness level and to progress further? These are all questions that we dare not ask ourselves today. But the time might come. Through these short fictional stories, you will be challenging your mind for an answer. Is there a purpose for the Olympics today and in the future? Maybe! But is there also an answer to the purpose of life in the near future when (we hope) current conflicts, social differences will somewhat disappear, and when new technologies will truly help us live better lives.

Book excerpt: In this radical and visionary new book, McKenzie Wark argues that the all-pervasive presence of data in our networked society has given rise to a new mode of production, one not ruled over by capitalists and their factories but by those who own and control the flow of information. Yet, if this is not capitalism anymore, could it be something worse? What if the world we're living in is more dystopian than the techno utopias of the Silicon Valley imagination? And, if this is the case, how do we find a way out? Capital Is Dead offers not only the theoretical tools to analyse this new world of information, but the ones to change it, too. Drawing on the writings of the Situationists and a range of contemporary theorists, Wark offers a vast panorama of the contemporary condition and the classes that control it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trespassing disciplines and binding together practice and theory, Telling Stories: Visual Practice, Theories and Narrative crosses strange territories and occupies liminal spaces. It addresses a contemporary preoccupation with narrative and narration, which is being played out across the arts, humanities and beyond, and considers how visual and performative encounters contribute to thinking. How might they tell theories? Telling Stories results from a series of symposia, held at Loughborough University School of Art and Design in 2007. The programme included papers, screenings and performances and was based around the convenors’ shared interests in Peggy Phelan’s notion of ‘performative writing’ and in the examination of inter-disciplinary forms of narrative and counter-narrative. It specifically focused on three aspects - experimental forms of Theories and Criticism, Objects and Narrative and the particular form of the Cinematic Essay and explored how the performative move could also be said to apply to forms of contemporary art practice: to what photography, film, objects wish to say. This resulting edited collection presents contemporary making and writing practices as multi-faceted, interdisciplinary and trans-medial and is indicative of an attitude that sets out to encounter the world, its social conditions, its global perspectives and the nature of aesthetic discussion that is no longer confined by formalism.
