Book excerpt: This workbook was written to promote a standard in the field for clinicians to increase confidence, competence, and effectiveness in addressing child sexual abuse and trauma treatment with children, adolescents, and young adults with developmental disabilities. The workbook is divided into two parts: the first part is focused on research and education regarding trauma treatment, developmental disabilities, and a module for treatment within this population, while the second part of the workbook presents examples of interventions, worksheets, and therapeutic activities for use with clients. Disorders such as Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Nonverbal Learning Disorder, and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome or Effects are reviewed in this manual. Additionally, motor, communication, sensory, and feeding problems are briefly discussed. This manual is not intended to provide detailed information on all developmental disabilities but rather provide a general overview of more common developmental disorders to increase understanding of assessment and treatment interventions discussed. It is intended for use with individuals with a moderate to high functioning level. The workbook can be used as a guide for masters and doctoral-level clinicians who are either licensed or are in training and under the supervision of a licensed mental health professional. It will also be a valuable resource for researchers, scholars, special educators, counselors, social workers, and professionals who work with sexual abuse survivors.

Book excerpt: In this book, the author describes ''what doesn't work'' by outlining the ways in which individuals with intellectual disability may have been damaged by the ''behavioral'' approach to their day-to-day actions. She demonstrates what has been missed through this approach: Needs have not been met, individuals have been misdiagnosed, and trauma responses have been triggered through the exclusive use of behavioral controls, both positive and negative. The author then moves on to describe ''what works.'' She explores the topics of stabilization, prevention, intervention, and the ''mental health plan.'' She proposes a model of behavioral intervention that does not require the use of restraints or contingencies; instead it promotes safety and security and addresses the outstanding issues around trauma.Numerous case studies are discussed, but all the names and relevant details have been altered to protect individuals, staff, and agencies. The mental health plan template the author puts forward instructs and informs staff about how to support people who have experienced trauma, both on a small scale and on a large one. She provides examples of this approach with case studies and illustrates how the plans should be written to ensure optimal implementation. This book gives the professionals and paraprofessionals who have dedicated themselves to this field and to the welfare of individuals with intellectual disability a trauma-informed paradigm within which to support people with intellectual disability psychologically and to establish the critical elements needed for recovery. As the author states in her introduction, ''when the individual recovers, behaviors change. When the individual recovers, happiness can begin.''

Book excerpt: Although violent crime in the United States has declined over the past five years, certain groups appear to remain at disproportionately high risk for violent victimization. In the United States, people with developmental disabilities-such as mental retardation, autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and severe learning disabilities may be included in this group. While the scientific evidence is scanty, a handful of studies from the United States, Canada, Australia, and Great Britain consistently find high rates of violence and abuse affecting people with these kinds of disabilities. A number of social and demographic trends are converging that may worsen the situation considerably over the next several years. The prevalence of developmental disabilities has increased in low-income populations, due to a number of factors, such as poor prenatal nutrition, lack of access to health care or better perinatal care for some fragile babies, and increases in child abuse and substance abuse during pregnancy. For example, a recent report of the California State Council on Developmental Disabilities found that during the past decade, while the state population increased by 20 percent, the number of persons with developmental disabilities in California increased by 52 percent and the population segment with mild mental retardation doubled. Because of a growing concern among parents and advocates regarding possible high rates of crime victimization among persons with developmental disabilities, Congress, through the Crime Victims with Disabilities Awareness Act of 1998, requested that the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences conduct a study to increase knowledge and information about crimes against individuals with developmental disabilities that will be useful in developing new strategies to reduce the incidence of crimes against those individuals. Crime Victims with Developmental Disabilities summarizes the workshop and addresses the following issues: (1) the nature and extent of crimes against individuals with developmental disabilities; (2) the risk factors associated with victimization of individuals with developmental disabilities; (3) the manner in which the justice system responds to crimes against individuals with disabilities; and (4) the means by which states may establish and maintain a centralized computer database on the incidence of crimes against individuals with disabilities within a state.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Individuals with disabilities are often “desexualized” in our society, yet they have the same need for intimacy, self-worth, and social belonging as people without disabilities. Sexuality and Disabilities addresses persons with physical, sensory, intellectual, and cognitive disabilities and their concerns in the areas of intimacy, family issues, sexuality, and sexual functioning. It offers suggestions for professionals who work with persons with these disabilities to help them work more competently with disabled persons in the sexuality arena. These concrete ideas are excellent for staff training and education and for enhancing professional development for those working with persons with physical disabilities. The contributing authors create an awareness that all people need individualized consideration and that the special needs of all individuals are important, especially for those who may have previously been left to discover things on their own--usually unsuccessfully. Sexuality and Disabilities focuses on a wide range of disabilities, including physical, developmental, and learning disabilities, mental retardation, and conditions that may have an impact on people later in life such as strokes, heart disease, or other chronic illness. Chapters discuss education and support issues for both practitioners and clients. Some of the topics examined include: components of a staff training program on sexuality and disability specific recommendations for sexuality education and counseling with people with spinal cord injuries and other acquired severe neurological disabilities a program model serving parents with mental retardation and their children specific ways educational programming, social work intervention, and policy efforts can address the special learning needs of people with cognitive impairments sources of support and stress for families caring for developmentally disabled children an analysis of special vulnerabilities and challenges relating to sexual victimization that confront people with disabilities An extremely helpful tool for human service practitioners, Sexuality and Disabilities is also a valuable resource for graduate and undergraduate students who have an interest in working with people with physical, cognitive, or mental disabilities and helping them explore this basic facet of their lives.
