Book excerpt: Almost 1 in 2 people suffer from problems with leg veins - so if you don't have them then someone close to you will. Venous reflux (the major cause of leg vein problems) can cause tired or aching legs, swollen or itchy ankles. Many people suffering from venous reflux are unaware of the problem, until they develop unsightly varicose veins, thread veins, venous eczema or venous leg ulcers. Many doctors and nurses are not aware of the new information available and still treat their patients inappropriately with creams, bandages or support stockings. "Understanding Venous Reflux - the cause of varicose veins and leg ulcers" has been written by Mark Whiteley, an internationally renowned vein expert. With clear explanations, illustrated by over 50 easy-to-follow diagrams, this book makes the understanding of venous reflux - the underlying cause of varicose veins and most venous problems (such as thread veins, venous leg ulcers, venous eczema, discoloured ankles, etc.) - accessible to most readers, helping them decide on what treatment they should seek. For medical and nursing students, as well as all doctors, nurses and other health care workers who deal with legs and leg vein problems, this is an essential text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complications following surgical procedures are not only associated with significant morbidity and mortality, but also add immensely to the psychological burden of the patient and are disappointing for the surgical team. Recent research has led to a greater understanding of the response to surgery and anaesthesia, and great advances have been made in pre-operative preparation with appropriate investigations and pharmacological prophylaxis. These have reduced the incidence of many complications, but the risks are impossible to remove completely. This wide-reaching and practical handbook covers all aspects of post-surgical complications. It is divided into two sections: the first covers general complications such as pressure sores, complications of fluid balance and problems related to anaesthesia, while the second focuses on the complications encountered in the major surgical specialties. Fully revised and updated since the previous edition, and written by a team of experts, Post-operative Complications is essential reading for all those involved in caring for surgical patients. It is particularly relevant for junior doctors and those preparing for their membership of the Royal College of Surgery (MRCS) exams.

Even if the steps you take don't cure the problem, they can relieve symptoms and allow you to go about your daily life, or at least help you until you're able to see a doctor. Some remedies, such as changing your diet to deal with heartburn or adapting your home environment to cope with chronic pain, may seem like common sense. You may have questions about when to apply heat or cold to injuries, what helps relieve the itch of an insect bite, or whether certain herbs, vitamins or minerals are really effective against the common cold or insomnia. You'll find these answers and more in Mayo Clinic Book of Home Remedies. In situations involving your health or the health of your family, the same questions typically arise: What actions can I take that are immediate, safe and effective? When should I contact my doctor? What symptoms signal an emergency? Mayo Clinic Book of Home Remedies clearly defines these questions with regard to your health concerns and guides you to choose the appropriate and most effective response.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the last five years a number of new books on venous disorders have been produced. Previously the study of venous disease was well-served by the classic texts of Foote, Anning, Dodd and Cockett, and Hobbs, but these texts are now out of print and out of date. How does Larry Tretbar's book equate with its competition? Those of you who pick up or purchase this delightful little book will not be disappointed. It is a single author text which is clearly written and succinct. In just over 100 pages Tretbar distils the work of many of his larger competitors without losing any vital information along the way. He also provides new insights and ideas in many areas. Contents are set out in a standard format but the writing is pithy and the line drawings (mostly by the author himself) are clear and helpful. It excels in the management and treatment of varicose veins where the author has made his major contribution. The book contains many of the classic venous references though these of necessity cannot be comprehensive in the interest of brevity. Linton pointed out that diseases of the veins of the lower extremities are one of the commonest of human ailments that can be remedied by surgical measures. These disorders are often poorly managed by junior doctors who fail to acquaint themselves with the anatomy and pathophysiology of these disorders.
