This book was released on 2015-03-20 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fifth volume of The Crustacea contains chapters on: ● Devoting a chapter to Pentastomida ● Class Eupentastomida ● Orders Bochusacea, Mictacea, and Spelaeogriphacea ● Order Amphipoda ● Order Tanaidacea For those working on Arthropoda, it will be obvious that the chapters on Pentastomida are newly conceived. The other chapters in this book constitute updated translations of contributions in the French edition of the Traité, volume 7(III)(A), while the order Bochusacea, not featuring in the French version as only more recently described, has been added in a combined treatment with the two closely similar orders. Overall, this constitutes the eighth tome published in this English series, viz., preceded by volumes 1 (2004), 2 (2006), 9A (2010), 9B (2012), 3 (2012), 4A (2013), and 4B (2014). From vol. 4A onward the chapters are no longer published in the serial sequence as originally envisaged, because the various contributions, both the updates and the entirely new chapters, become available in a more or less random order. Yet, when completing this series, all major issues as well as all taxa currently recognized will have been treated.

Book excerpt: This part B of the fourth volume of The Crustacea contains chapters on: ● Crustaceans in the Biosphere ● Crustaceans and Mankind ● Crustaceans in Art ● Orders Lophogastrida, Stygiomysida, and Mysida [collectively known as Mysidacea] As evident from the number 4B tagged to this volume, vol. 4 as originally planned had to be split into two fascicles, 4A and 4B, simply because of the numbers of pages covered by the various contributions meant for volume 4. The chapters in this book grew out of those in the French edition volumes 7(II) and 7(III)(A). Overall, this constitutes the seventh tome published in this English series, viz., preceded by volumes 1 (2004), 2 (2006), 9A (2010), 9B (2012), 3 (2012), and 4A (2013). Readers/users should note that from vol. 4A onward we have had to abandon publishing the chapters in the serial sequence as originally envisaged by the late Prof. J. Forest, because the various contributions, i.e., both the updates and the entirely new chapters, have become available in a more or less random order.

Book excerpt: As evident from the number 4A tagged to this volume, vol. 4 as originally planned had to be split into two fascicles, 4A and 4B, simply because of the numbers of pages covered by the various contributions meant for volume 4. The present volume, then, comprises the fourth part in the series The Crustacea, i.e., the revised and updated texts from the Traité de Zoologie – Crustacea. The chapters in this book grew out of those in the French edition volume 7(II). The exception is chapter 49, which has been newly conceived; it was never published in French. Overall, this constitutes the sixth tome published in this English series, viz., preceded by volumes 1 (2004), 2 (2006), 9A (2010), 9B (2012), and 3 (2012). This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this edition, access to the texts of the famous Traité de Zoologie is now available to a worldwide readership. Parts 1, 2, and 3A of volume VII, i.e., the Crustacea, were published in French in, respectively, 1994, 1996, and 1999. Brill recognized the importance of these books and arranged for a translation to be made. However, some of the manuscripts dated from the early 1980s and it was clear from the beginning that in many fields of biology a mere translation of the existing text would not suffice. Thus, all chapters have been carefully reviewed, either by the original authors or by newly attracted specialists, and adequate updates have been prepared accordingly. This third volume of The Crustacea, revised and updated from the Traité de Zoologie contains chapters on: - Neuroanatomy - Neurohormones - Embryology - Relative Growth and Allometry The volume concludes with a list of contributors, as well as with both taxonomic and subject indices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About 90 per cent of the 10,000 known species of the Crustacea Decapoda live in oceans and adjacent coastal and estuarine regions, and most of them pass through a complex life history comprising a benthic (juvenile-adult) and a planktonic (larval) phase. The larvae show a wide array of adaptations to the pelagic environment, including modifications in their functional morphology, anatomy, the molting cycle, nutrition, growth, chemical composition, metabolism, energy partitioning, ecology and behaviour.;All these traits are reviewed in this volume, attempting to promote an integrated, multidisciplinary view of the biology of larval Decapoda and other crustacean taxa. Emphasis is placed on the lesser-known anatomical, bioenergetic and ecophysiological aspects of larval life, as morphology has already been extensively documented. Changes in biological parameters (for example, rates of feeding, growth, metabolism) are shown in successive developmental stages, within individual stages, and as responses to environmental factors. Particular attention is paid to interrelationships between intrinsic phenomena (molting cycle, organogenesis, growth) and the overlaying effects of extrinsic factors (for example, food, temperature, salinity, pollution). Concluding from the available data, major bias and gaps in present knowledge of larval biology are identified and discussed as to their potential significance in future research.

This book was released on 2007-09-06 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding of animal social and sexual evolution has seen a renaissance in recent years with discoveries of frequent infidelity in apparently monogamous species, the importance of sperm competition, active female mate choice, and eusocial behavior in animals outside the traditional social insect groups. Each of these findings has raised new questions, and suggested new answers, about the evolution of behavioral interactions among animals. This volume synthesizes recent research on the sexual and social biology of the Crustacea, one of the dominant invertebrate groups on earth. Its staggering diversity includes ecologically important inhabitants of nearly every environment from deep-sea trenches, through headwater streams, to desert soils. The wide range of crustacean phenotypes and environments is accompanied by a comparable diversity of behavioral and social systems, including the elaborate courtship and wildly exaggerated morphologies of fiddler crabs, the mysterious queuing behavior of migrating spiny lobsters, and even eusociality in coral-reef shrimps. This diversity makes crustaceans particularly valuable for exploring the comparative evolution of sexual and social systems. Despite exciting recent advances, however, general recognition of the value of Crustacea as models has lagged behind that of the better studied insects and vertebrates. This book synthesizes the state of the field in crustacean behavior and sociobiology and places it in a conceptually based, comparative framework that will be valuable to active researchers and students in animal behavior, ecology, and evolutionary biology. It brings together a group of internationally recognized and rising experts in fields related to crustacean behavioral ecology, ranging from physiology and functional morphology, through mating and social behavior, to ecology and phylogeny. Each chapter makes connections to other, non-crustacean taxa, and the volume closes with a summary section that synthesizes the contributions, discusses anthropogenic impacts, highlights unanswered questions, and provides a vision for profitable future research.
