Book excerpt: 'A Treatise on the Use of the Tenses in Hebrew and Some Other Syntactical Questions' is the foundation of all modern studies of the Hebrew and Semitic verb. Driver maintained that the tenses of Hebrew verbs were employed to express types of action rather than time. While not undisputed, Driver set the tone for the conversation. While modern concerns may pay closer attention to contextuality or to state and action, many continue to acknowledge Driver's original emphasis that the Hebrew tense system is not primarily concerned with time relations.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1874 by Oxford University Press, this was the first attempt in English to expound the principles of Hebrew syntax on lines at once philosophical and scientific. This edition adopts the third and final 1892 edition of Driver's classic work and includes a new introductory essay on the history of the Tenses and its enduring importance as a manual for today's students of Hebrew. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions of this thematic collection center around the typology of pronominal paradigms, the generation of syntactic and semantic representations for constructions containing pronouns, and the neurological underpinnings for linguistic distinctions that are relevant for the production and interpretation of these constructions. They come from different theoretical approaches and methodological backgrounds and take into account data from a wide range of Indoeuropean and non-Indoeuropean languages. Bringing together a cross-section of recent research on the grammar and representation of pronouns, the volume offers a kaleidoscope of studies united by the common topic of pronouns as a domain of language that exemplarily shows the interaction of different components responsible for computational (syntactic and semantic), lexical, and discourse-pragmatic processes.

This book was released on 2014-10-23 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past century, numerous books and articles have appeared on the verbal system of Semitic languages. Thanks to the discovery of Ugaritic texts, Akkadian tablets, Canaanite letters found at Tell el-Amarna in Egypt, Hebrew and Aramaic inscriptions, and the Dead Sea Scrolls, our understanding of the phonology, morphology, and syntax of the Semitic languages has increased substantially. Dallaire focuses primarily on prose texts in Biblical Hebrew and Amarna Canaanite in which the verbal system (morphemes, syntax) expresses nuances of wishes, desires, requests, and commands. According to her, volitional concepts are found in every language and are expressed through verbal morphemes, syntagmas, intonation, syntax, and other linguistic means. The Syntax of Volitives in Biblical Hebrew and Amarna Canaanite Prose attempts to answer the following questions: Do volitives function in a similar way in Biblical Hebrew and Amarna Canaanite? Where and why is there overlap in morphology and syntax between these two languages? What morphological and syntactical differences exist between the volitional expressions of the languages? In attempting to answer these questions, the author bears in mind the fact that, within each of these two languages, scribes from different areas used specific dialectal and scribal traditions (for example, northern versus southern, peripheral versus central).

Book excerpt: This new monograph on the Hebrew verb examines those instances in which the qatal form (the so-called "perfect" or suffix conjugation) appears to refer to present or future events. The "gnomic", "prophetic", and "performative" perfects are each treated in turn. This study is especially intended for Hebrew linguists and scholars of the Old Testament, but its results will be of interest to scholars of other Semitic languages as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The law on the "cities of refuge" contained in Numbers 35:9-34 is almost universally seen as a simple repetition of legal content that is basically already present in the legislation of other biblical books. Francesco Cocco demonstrates that we find ourselves here before a case of reformulation instead of simple repetition, the implications of which are extremely interesting for the understanding of biblical penal legislation. In this particular fragment, it exhibits traces of modernity so surprising as to be as good as the defence of civil liberties in the legal systems currently in force in the majority of democratic states. The author's enquiry takes its starting point and develops, therefore, from the novel contribution which the legislation in Numbers 35:9-34 confers on the entire biblical law of a penal character. --
