Book excerpt: Excerpt from Naval Architecture: A Treatise on Ship-Building, and the Rig of Clippers, With Suggestions for a New Method of Laying Down Vessels But besides these prudential reasons, there are also mercantile considerations which would induce an increase of speed in our merchant vessels. By a month's delay in a passage from China, a merchant might have to brook the loss of a considerable sum in interest, or he might even miss the market altogether. In men-of-war more accommodation, in pro portion, is necessary than in yachts, and stowage for a large amount of stores. The weight of the armament also requires a large displacement. But, after the attainment of these objects, speed becomes the paramount consideration. It becomes a question then, whether placing the guns further apart, should not give the necessary displacement, and also allow the attainment of greater speed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise on the Theory and Practice of Naval Architecture: Being the Article "Ship-Building" In the Encyclopaedia Britannica, Seventh Edition It will be observed, that in the pages of the following Treatise, whenever the details of practice] building incidentally involve the mention of modern deviations from ancient cus tomary combinations or methods of fitting, all discussion as to who were or who were not the original proposers has been avoided. A contrary course would have been entering into controversial discussions that would have been completely at variance with the intention of the Treatise.
