Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Treatise on Heat 1. Temperature. If we place a poker in a fire, and after some time remove it, it feels hot. The physical cause of this sensation is called heat. A piece of iron which has been exposed to the air in Britain will generally feel cold. If we hold for some time in the right hand a piece of iron which feels hot, and then grasp the right hand with the left, the left hand will experience a sensation of heat, or the right hand will feel hot to the left, and at the same time the left hand will feel cold to the right. The same will be true if we hold for some time in the right hand any other body which feels hot. The fact that the right hand feels hot to the left after holding the hot iron, while it may have felt neither hot nor cold before, proves that the hand has received heat from the iron. We therefore infer that when a body feels hot to the hand, it imparts heat to the hand while touching it. It then follows that, because the right hand feels hot to the left hand, heat must pass from the right hand to the left. But the left hand feels cold to the right hand, and associating this sensation with what we have just proved; viz., that heat passes from the right hand to the left, we infer that a body feels cold to the hand when heat passes from the hand to the body. We may arrive at the same conclusion by holding in the right hand a piece of very cold iron, after which the right hand will feel cold to the left, and the left hand warm to the right. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Heat The present short Treatise represents, with some few additions, a course of instruction which has been found suitable for boys who have already made some acquaint ance with Physiography and the Elementary Dynamics of solids and fluids, before they proceed to the more difficult1 subject of Chemistry. The treatment of the subject throughout is intended to be of an elementary and practical character. Especial stress has been laid upon the results and applications of the general laws of Heat to the arts and manufactures, and to the explanation of phenomena of common occurrence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Heat, as Applied to the Useful Arts: For the Use of Engineers, Architects, Etc The object of the following work is to give Data Rules, and Tables to facilitate the practical application of the Laws of Heat to the Useful Arts. The subject has throughout been largely illustrated by Examples worked out in detail, and this has led to calculations more or less complicated; but the author's special desire to make the "principles" of the subject clear to the reader could not be so well attained by any other means. The authorities from whom the Experimental Data, &c., are derived, are for the most part given as they occur; but Peclet's great work, 'Traite de la Chaleur, ' should be more particularly mentioned. It confines itself to the most important hypothesis of the mechanical theory of heat, that heat is due to motion, but refuses on principle to specialize as to the character of this motion. This is a safer point of View than the first, and philosophically quite as satisfactory as the mechanical interpretation of nature in general, but it does not as yet offer a foundation of sufficient breadth upon which to build a detailed theory. Starting from this point of view, all that can be obtained is the verification of some general laws which have already been deduced in other. Ways direct from experience. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heat and Thermodynamics With so many good works in existence, both on Heat and Thermodynamics, it may perhaps appear presumptuous to publish the following text. The author, however, has long felt the need of a text, in teaching the subject of thermodynamics, which properly covers, without introducing too much material, the fundamental principles of heat measurements. To expect an average student to cull from his text book on physics, or some treatise on heat, no matter how well the subject may have been taught, an introduction to thermodynamics is, in general, expecting somewhat more of him than he can accomplish. But it has been found, by experience, that a short course on the fundamental principles of heat, given as an introduction to the subject of thermodynamics, greatly reduces the difficulties, experienced by most students, in pursuing this subject. Since it is almost impossible for a student to understand a complex piece of apparatus, unless he can actually examine it, long and tedious descriptions have been purposely avoided. Likewise, for the reason that photographs are seldom, if ever, of any value, all pictorial illustrations are diagrammatic. It is, of course, impossible to teach the subject of thermo dynamics without the application of differential and integral calculus; but the aim has been throughout to keep within the bounds of elementary mathematics. However, a fair knowledge of the calculus, on the part of the reader, has been assumed. Very few teachers, if any, can present an unbiassed view of a speculative theory; furthermore, before a student has thor oughly mastered the groundwork of any subject, he is not in a position to properly discriminate between the various arguments that may be advanced, either for or against a speculative theory. It must also be remembered that the average student looks upon his instructor as an infallible authority; and that he accepts a theory on the mere say so Of his instructor, no matter how flimsy the arguments upon which it may be based. How fre quently one meets those who are in a condition so deplorable that they can talk very glibly about electrons, ionization, etc., and are driven helplessly into a corner by one or two well directed questions. Whether there is or is not such a thing as an atom has nothing to do with the law Of definite propor tion. Facts will always remain and theories change to fit them. It is for these various reasons that Speculative discussions, such as that Of the kinetic theory of gases, have been avoided, and that very hypothetical medium - the ether - has found no place ln this text. It cannot be too strongly emphasized that before we teach metaphysics to a student we must first give him a thor ough training in mathematics and physics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heating and Ventilating Buildings: An Elementary Treatise Heat is recognized by a bodily sensation, that of feeling, by means of which we are able to determine roughly by com parison that one body is warmer or colder than another. From a scientific standpoint heat is a peculiar form of energy, similar in many respects to electricity or light, and is capable, under favorable conditions, of being reduced into either of the above or into mechanical work. We shall have little to do with the theoretical discussion of its nature, but, as it is well to have a distinct understanding of its various forms and equivalents, we will consider briefly some Of its important properties. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heat: A Mode of Motion Not the results alone of scientific inquiry, but the operations of the inquiring mind, are of interest to'the reader here in View. I have therefore tried to show the tendency displayed throughout'history, by the most pro found investigators, to pass from the world of the senses to a world where vision becomes spiritual, where princi ples are elaborated, and from which the explorer emerges with conceptions and conclusions, to be approved or rejected according as they coincide, or refuse to coin cide, with sensible things. By his observations and reflec tions in the domain of fact the scientific philosopher is led irresistibly into the domain of theory, his final repose depending on the establishment of absolute harmony between both domains. Thus the motions of the solar system rest securely upon the Principle of Gravitation; light reposes on the Theory of Undulation, while it is the object of this took to show that thermal phenomena find a similar basis in the Mechanical Theory of Heat.
