Book Synopsis Handbook of Mental Health Assessment and Treatment in Jails by : Virginia Barber-Rioja
Download or read book Handbook of Mental Health Assessment and Treatment in Jails written by Virginia Barber-Rioja and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Few places are more chaotic than jail. For incarcerated individuals and staff alike, the volatility of the jail environment is based in large part on its status as a temporary institution. Unlike prisons, where all incarcerated individuals have been convicted of a crime and are serving long sentences (typically of more than a year), jails overwhelmingly house individuals who are waiting a disposition to their court case (approximately 74%; Sawyer & Wagner, 2020); a minority of jailed individuals are also serving sentences under a year for minor offenses. While a jail is a temporary holding area for persons awaiting adjudication, temporary can mean days or years depending on factors often outside the control of the jailed person. In jails, people charged with violent felonies are often housed alongside citizens arrested for minor crimes as they all await a disposition to their case. Unlike in prison, where incarcerated individuals know the outcome of their case and sentence length, in jail these are unknowns"--

Book Synopsis Shaping the Single European Market in the Field of Foreign Direct Investment by : Philip Strik
Download or read book Shaping the Single European Market in the Field of Foreign Direct Investment written by Philip Strik and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Treaty of Lisbon (2009) has brought foreign direct investment (FDI) within the scope of the European Union's common commercial policy (CCP). In light of this development, this book analyses the internal and external dimension of EU law and policy in the field of FDI. It takes four perspectives: (i) the operation of the internal market mechanism to direct investment; (ii) the implications of the Lisbon amendments to the CCP under Article 207 TFEU for the Union's competence and practice in the field of FDI; (iii) the interaction between EU law and Member States' bilateral investment treaties (BITs) with third countries; (iv) the interplay between EU law and BITs that are currently in force between two Member States (intra-EU BITs). The book focuses on the extent to which the European Union operates as a Single Market for EU and non-EU investors. In doing so, it analyses the EU and international regulatory framework on the admission, treatment and protection of FDI within, to and from the Single European Market. It uses close jurisprudential analysis and examines the context, purpose and evolution of EU legal integration in the field of FDI. It thereby traces the principles underlying the European international economic order in the field of FDI.
Book Synopsis The Use of Psychological Testing for Treatment Planning and Outcomes Assessment by : Mark E. Maruish
Download or read book The Use of Psychological Testing for Treatment Planning and Outcomes Assessment written by Mark E. Maruish and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-07-19 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Test-based psychological assessment has been significantly affected by the health care revolution in the United States during the past two decades. Despite new limitations on psychological services across the board and psychological testing in particular, it continues to offer a rapid and efficient method of identifying problems, planning and monitoring a course of treatment, and assessing the outcomes of interventions. This thoroughly revised and greatly expanded third edition of a classic reference, now three volumes, constitutes an invaluable resource for practitioners who in a managed care era need to focus their testing not on the general goals of personality assessment, symptom identification, and diagnosis so often presented to them as students and trainees, but on specific questions: What course of treatment should this person receive? How is it going? Was it effective? New chapters describe new tests and models and new concerns such as ethical aspects of outcomes assessment. Volume I reviews general issues and recommendations concerning the use of psychological testing for screening for psychological disturbances, planning and monitoring appropriate interventions, and the assessing outcomes, and offers specific guidelines for selecting instruments. It also considers more specific issues such as the analysis of group and individual patient data, the selection and implementation of outcomes instrumentation, and the ethics of gathering and using outcomes data. Volume II discusses psychological measures developed for use with younger children and adolescents that can be used for the purposes outlined in Volume I; Volume III, those developed for use with adults. Drawing on the knowledge and experience of a diverse group of leading experts--test developers, researchers, clinicians and others, the third edition of The Use of Psychological Testing for Treatment Planning and Outcomes Assessment provides vital assistance to all clinicians, and to their trainees and graduate students.

Book Synopsis Healing Holidays by : Harish Naraindas
Download or read book Healing Holidays written by Harish Naraindas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume on medical tourism includes contributions by anthropologists and historians on a variety of health-seeking modes of travel and leisure. It brings together analyses of recent trends of "medical tourism", such as underinsured middle-class Americans traveling to India for surgery, pious Middle Eastern couples seeking assisted reproduction outside their borders, or consumers of the exotic in search of alternative healing, with analyses of the centuries-old Euro-American tradition of traveling to spas. Rather than seeing these two forms of medical travel as being disparate, the book demonstrates that, as noted in the introduction ‘what makes patients itinerant in both the old and new kind of medical travel is either a perceived shortage or constraint at ‘home’, or the sense of having reached a particular kind of therapeutic impasse, with the two often so intertwined that it is difficult to tell them apart. The constraint may stem from things as diverse as religious injunctions, legal hurdles, social approbation, or seasonal affliction; and the shortage can range from a lack of privacy, of insurance, technology, competence, or enough therapeutic resources that can address issues and conditions that patients have. If these two intertwined strands are responsible for most medical tourism, then which locales seem to have therapeutic resources are those that are either ‘natural,’ in the form of water or climate; legal, in the form of a culture that does not stigmatise patients; or technological and professional, in the form of tests, equipment, or expertise, unavailable or affordable at home; or in the form of novel therapeutic possibilities that promise to resolve irresolvable issues’. This book was originally published as a special issue of Anthropology & Medicine.
