Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The set owned by Sir George Scharf, director of the National Portrait Gallery. Scharf has annotated and interleaved these pages with manuscripts and letters received, newspaper clippings, and printed pamphlets, in effect producing an unpublished corrected and enlarged second edition. In a fair copy of a letter to John Murray (1855 March 16), Scharf cites numerous errata and inaccuracies in Waagen. Scharf had access to the great historic homes and private collections of art in England and based his revisions on first-hand knowledge. Newspaper clippings record the loss, dispersal or sale of the collections originally surveyed by Waagen. Letters received from connoisseurs, collectors, and artists include Lord Cowper, Lady Louisa Egerton, Frederic George Stephens, W.A. Scott Robertson, George Redford, the Earl of Ellesmere, R.S. Holford, and Sir Charles Lock Eastlake. Printed materials include "A Catalogue of the Orleans' Italian pictures ..." (London, 1798) and the text of Scharf's paper on the paintings in the collection of the Society of Antiquaries of London (1862 Nov. 20). The first volume of the set contains a dedication to Scharf from the translator, Lady Eastlake.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treasures of Art in Great Britain, Vol. 1 of 3: Being an Account of the Chief Collections of Paintings, Drawings, Sculptures, Illuminated Mss., &C, &C Flaxman, but also devoted much time to the study of English miniatures contained in mss. From the earliest times down to the l6th century. By this means, in the absence of all works of a larger class of the period, I endeavoured to arrive at some know ledge both of the historical progress and of the characteristics of the English school of painting. At the same time my atten tion was extended to the miniatures of other nations preserved in England. Drawings by the old masters, engravings, and woodcuts have also been largely the object of my studies, so that I may venture to say that, both as regards the larger class of the public Who are interested in knowing' the actual extent of the treasures of art in England, and also the more learned connoisseur of the history of art, this edition offers incomparably richer and more maturely digested materials than the former one. At the same time, I am well aware that in both respects much remains to be desired. For, notwithstanding the ceaseless researches of thirteen months, the aggregate time of my three Visits to England, the number of collections - larger and smaller - which I heard of without being able to visit, was very considerable, While at the same time many doubtless exist of which I received no tidings at all. N or, with all the experience in the study of the art which I have gathered since my first visit in 1835, would I have the reader suppose that I assume the least infallibility in my judgments - all I can say is, that I have pursued my researches with equal enthusiasm and desire for truth. For the many errors Which this work doubtless contains, I claim the indulgence of those who know from experience the difficulties which beset the critic on art. How much even depends on the conditions under which a work of art may be viewed - ou the composure of the critic's own mind - ou the more or less leisure and comfort with Which it is associated - on the mode of lighting, position, 850. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1854 edition. Excerpt: ...Andrea Del Sarto.--The Virgin and Child, with the Baptist. A feeble performance of his school. Roman School. 71. Giulio Romano.--A procession of men and animals. Very spiritedly composed, and admirably executed in chiaroscuro. 74. The Annunciation. Very graceful; but the work of a master of the first half of the sixteenth century. Ascribed to Scipione Gaetano. Venetian School. 75. Pietro Degli Ingannati, an imitator of Giovanni Bellini.--The Marriage of St. Catherine, in the presence of St. Michael and St Veronica. 2 ft. 3 in. high, 3 ft. wide. A carefully executed picture, of genuine religious feeling. I formed my opinion from a picture in the Berlin Museum, inscribed "Petrus de Ingannatus." 76. Girolamo Da Santa Croce, a fine Bergamese painter.--The Resurrection of Christ. On the right hand St Catherine gazing at him with intense interest, and the donor, a little woman dressed in white; on the left hand St. Benedict; in the foreground two rabbits playing. Particularly noble in the characters, warm in the colours, and in admirable preservation. I must also mention an alto-rilievo of very good workmanship, from the engraving, by Marc Antonio, of Raphael's composition of Alexander the Great causing the works of Homer to be preserved in a magnificent box. 77. Vincenzo Catena.--The Virgin and Child blessing the donor, surrounded by angels. 2 ft. 8 in. high, 3 ft 7 in. wide. Inscribed "vincentivs Chatena. F." Still quite in the style of his master, Giovanni Bellini. The characters are pleasing, though unimportant; the tone of the flesh yellowish in the woman, a full brown in the men. Portrait of the donor very animated. 78. The Virgin and Child. This picture has no connexion whatever with Cima da Concgliano, the master...
