Book excerpt: Treasure in Heaven is a prayer journal designed to help kick start your prayer life. It's perfect for those who have never prayed before and those who have fallen out of the habit of daily prayer. It's 40 days long and the perfect start for a daily prayer life. God is our treasure, and yet few people embark on the adventure of seeking God. I believe that it is because we do not know where to start. Treasure in Heaven is here to do just that: give you the launch point to a deeper relationship with God. Through this simple 40-day, 10 minutes a day prayer and journal guide, my hope is that you will acquire the discipline of daily prayer, gain a deeper understanding of who God is, and invite Jesus to be at the centre of your life. Are you ready? "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." -Matthew 6:21. This newly designed version includes the basic Gospel Message with illustrations and related bible verses, followed by a prayer of surrender. This makes it a simple way to share Jesus with others (a tool to help you evangelize). Book Synopsis Treasure in Heaven by : Peter R. Brown
Download or read book Treasure in Heaven written by Peter R. Brown and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2016-03-08 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "holy poor" have long maintained an elite status within Christianity. Differing from the "real" poor, these clergymen, teachers, and ascetics have historically been viewed by their fellow Christians as persons who should receive material support in exchange for offering immeasurable immaterial benefits—teaching, preaching, and prayer. Supporting them—quite as much as supporting the real poor—has been a way to accumulate eventual treasure in heaven. Yet from the rise of Christian monasticism in Egypt and Syria to present day, Christians have argued fiercely about whether monks should work to support themselves. In Treasure in Heaven, renowned historian Peter Brown shifts attention from Western to Eastern Christianity, introducing us to this smoldering debate that took place across the entire Middle East from the Euphrates to the Nile. Seen against the backdrop of Asia, Christianity might have opted for a Buddhist model by which holy monks lived by begging alone. Instead, the monks of Egypt upheld an alternative model that linked the monk to humanity and the monastery to society through acceptance of the common, human bond of work. This model of Third World Christianity—a Christianity that we all too easily associate with the West—eventually became the basis for the monasticism of western Europe, as well as for modern Western attitudes to charity and labor. In Treasure in Heaven, Brown shows how and why we are still living—at times uncomfortably—with that choice.

Book excerpt: Award-winning author Guy Gavriel Kay evokes the dazzling Tang Dynasty of 8th-century China in an masterful story of honor and power. It begins simply. Shen Tai, son of an illustrious general serving the Emperor of Kitai, has spent two years honoring the memory of his late father by burying the bones of the dead from both armies at the site of one of his father's last great battles. In recognition of his labors and his filial piety, an unlikely source has sent him a dangerous gift: 250 Sardian horses. You give a man one of the famed Sardian horses to reward him greatly. You give him four or five to exalt him above his fellows, propel him towards rank, and earn him jealousy, possibly mortal jealousy. Two hundred and fifty is an unthinkable gift, a gift to overwhelm an emperor. Wisely, the gift comes with the stipulation that Tai must claim the horses in person. Otherwise he would probably be dead already...

Download or read book Jailhouse Journals written by Mike Mahy and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2020-11-24 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incarceration. Pain. Change. Miracles. Spending time in jail isn’t easy for anyone who has been forced to have that experience. Spending time in jail for what you deserve is God’s and humankind’s justice. Spending time in jail out of God’s mercy is something completely different. This is what I want to share about in Jailhouse Journals. It was because of God’s justice that I got the sentence I deserved for the crimes I committed, but in his mercy, the experience in jail was more than what I had ever expected. To get the help I needed while in jail gave me hope not only for me but also for those who may be reading this to get help from the trap of sexual addiction. The purpose of these journals is to inspire them that God is not only real, but he is also a loving God and will help them change if they are willing to do so, and that there is actually a system of incarceration, called right living community, as a rehabilitation approach to serving a sentence rather than just doing hard time. I am hoping that maybe, just maybe, that anyone reading this can be averted from committing a senseless sexual crime against another because they now have hope and can work up the courage to get the help they need. Finally, this book is also for any victim of sexual offences committed against them so that they can receive inner healing and possibly even work up the ability to forgive their perpetrator for their horrendous acts. I have discovered that forgiveness sets the one doing the forgiving free emotionally, mentally, and spiritually, more so than the one being forgiven. These journals also show that there is a road map to getting specific help; the fact that proper counseling; good cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) courses; support groups such as AA, NA, SAA, and Celebrate Recovery, and even taking an amazing course developed by my chaplain that is called Spiritual Perspective on Sexuality as a means to receiving better emotional wholeness and well-being, making better decisions and developing better thinking patterns. Be set free. Receive healing. Experience transformation. Watch miracles flow!
Download or read book Raising Cain written by Wayne Harvey and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Beside oneself,” “as old as the hills,” “the kiss of death,” “see eye to eye,” and “raising Cain” are all expressions most English speakers understand and use in conversation. If you asked someone what these phrases have in common, few would be able to say that they all come from the Bible. Even in a secular, post-Christian age the imprint of the Bible, and especially the King James Version, is pervasive and profound. A distinguished professor of literature has said, “the King James Version of the Bible is the most influential English book ever printed.” Its themes have influenced the arts, constitutions, laws, and everyday language. In Raising Cain. Dr. Wayne Harvey provides fascinating documen- tation of the echoes of the King James Bible on the tongues of and in the writings of 21st century English speakers. His entry on “Raising Cain” shows how this treasury of biblical expressions works: Raise Cain (See also “Cain and Abel” and “Cain, Mark of”) To create a disturbance. One sense of raise in old English is to conjure up. To raise Cain is to bring up or express the spirit of Cain. But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him (Genesis 4:5-7).

This book was released on 2015-06-22 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Søren Kierkegaard (1813-55) published an extraordinary number of works during his lifetime, but he left behind nearly as much unpublished writing, most of which consists of what are called his "journals and notebooks." Volume 2 of this 11-volume edition of Kierkegaard's Journals and Notebooks includes materials from 1836 to 1846, a period that takes Kierkegaard from his student days to the peak of his activity as an author. In addition to containing hundreds of Kierkegaard's reflections on philosophy, theology, literature, and his own personal life, these journals are the seedbed of many ideas and passages that later surfaced in Either/Or, Repetition, Fear and Trembling, Philosophical Fragments, The Concept of Anxiety, Stages on Life's Way, Concluding Unscientific Postscript, and a number of Edifying Discourses.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From the author of Into the Wild and Into Thin Air, this extraordinary work of investigative journalism takes readers inside America’s isolated Mormon Fundamentalist communities. • Now an acclaimed FX limited series streaming on HULU. “Fantastic.... Right up there with In Cold Blood and The Executioner’s Song.” —San Francisco Chronicle Defying both civil authorities and the Mormon establishment in Salt Lake City, the renegade leaders of these Taliban-like theocracies are zealots who answer only to God; some 40,000 people still practice polygamy in these communities. At the core of Krakauer’s book are brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a commandment from God to kill a blameless woman and her baby girl. Beginning with a meticulously researched account of this appalling double murder, Krakauer constructs a multi-layered, bone-chilling narrative of messianic delusion, polygamy, savage violence, and unyielding faith. Along the way he uncovers a shadowy offshoot of America’s fastest growing religion, and raises provocative questions about the nature of religious belief.

Book Synopsis The theory of the kingdom: A unified model of human agency by : Andrew Root
Download or read book The theory of the kingdom: A unified model of human agency written by Andrew Root and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2024-01-02 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original monograph presents a comprehensive theory regarding the economy of the kingdom of God. The theory and associated model will help individuals make better choices. The research integrates fundamentals of the temporal real economy, and the permanent economy of the kingdom of God, to present a unified model of human agency. According to the model, effective agents are salt and light in the real economy, arresting corruption and revealing the truth. Effective agency produces life, peace, and growth. Individual and organizational practices that arrest corruption and reveal truth can resolve longstanding economic grievances. The list of spiritual credence goods is extensive and includes commonly known virtues such as humility, patience, and hope. Spiritual goods are allocated based on the owner-agent relationship. The quantity of goods the owner supplies is in proportion to an individual’s sacrificial offering of time and money. Spiritual goods are stored as heart capital. In a process analogous to the real economy, heart labor applied to heart capital produces desirable outputs. The owner relates to his agents through a heart-inscribed behavioral contract. The owner generally intervenes in the real economy by communicating with agents rather than by restricting choice. Prior studies across economics, finance, and sociology prove the efficiency of behavioral contracts and communication over restricted choice. Herein researchers will find new testable propositions, and practitioners will find new ideas and practices to live better, more consequential lives. Examples of practical applications include methods of resolving group-level bias and understanding the purpose of life’s difficulties.
