Book Synopsis A Discourse Concerning Treasons, and Bills of Attainder by : Richard West
Download or read book A Discourse Concerning Treasons, and Bills of Attainder written by Richard West and published by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reprint of the first edition. One of the most controversial and feared powers of parliament, attainder was the extinction of the civil rights and powers of people convicted of treason or other grave felony. Its principal consequences were the forfeiture and escheat of lands and disqualification from holding, inheriting or transmitting land, either directly or through descent. Especially popular during the Reign of Henry VIII, bills of attainder were usually employed to punish persons who had displeased the king. (Essentially abolished in 1870, they were applied to outlaws until 1932, when they were abolished altogether.) As one would expect, their use as a tool of reprisal caused widespread resentment. West [d. 1726] appreciates this resentment, but argues that bills of attainder are justifiable in certain situations and defends their use.

With his latest, Treason, he has done it again and the reading lamp just burns on through the night...' Frederick Forsyth

Book excerpt: A Secret Service agent confronts Russian spycraft, murder in the White House, and a dangerous talk-radio host in a “completely mesmerizing” thriller (Dale Brown, New York Times-bestselling author of Eagle Station). The terrorists who came within a heartbeat of undermining the presidency of the United States in Executive Actions are back in Executive Treason with a new—and deadlier—plot to destabilize the U.S. government. It begins with the mugging and murder of a female White House staffer. Secret Service Agent Scott Roarke discovers the larger truth: the murder was committed by his secret nemesis, the mysterious assassin who had stayed one step ahead of him during the presidential campaign. This time, Roarke has found clues about the assassin’s past that give him the tools he needs to hunt the hunter—and also silence a popular hate talk radio host dividing the country. But the clues can only go so far. Roarke needs all his skills—and a lot of luck—if he’s going to catch his quarry… “Fast-paced, with vivid characters and a plot right off the front pages. Surprises you on every page. A winner.”—Larry Bond, New York Times-bestselling author of Arctic Gambit

Book excerpt: England 1469. Elizabeth Hardacre loves her father, a friend and ally of the Earl of Warwick, the most powerful man in England. When the Earl of Warwick's messenger informs her that her father is suspected of treason, Elizabeth's life changes dramatically, as it soon becomes apparent that it is not her father but the Earl of Warwick who has broken with King Edward IV, the man he put on the throne. The Wars of the Roses has begun again. Held as a hostage to ensure her father's compliance with the Earl of Warwick's wishes, Elizabeth becomes involved in a battle of her own: to obtain her father's freedom, even though this means taking the life of a man whose greatest sin is to love her. Unable to seek absolution for her crime, Elizabeth convinces herself that she is beyond redemption and adds sin on sin. But just when she believes that she can once again taste happiness, her trust is betrayed and she seeks a terrible revenge for that betrayal, one that will determine who holds the throne of England.
