Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Defining their enterprise as more in the direction of poetics than of prosaics, the Comaroffs free themselves to analyze a vivid series of images and events as objects of analysis. These they mine for clues to the 19th-century contents of the British imagination and of Tswana minds. They are themselves imagining the imagination of others, and they do the job with characteristic aplomb....The first volume creates an appetite for the second."—Sally Falk Moore, American Anthropologist

Download or read book Country of Writing written by Dr. Lydia Wevers and published by Auckland University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering examination of travel writing about New Zealand in the colonial period discusses a wide range of writing that helped place New Zealand on the literary map, while providing an oblique history of the young nation in the 19th century. Exploring early newspaper accounts; the journals of missionaries, traders, and adventurers; and the guidebooks and specialized descriptions of fishing, and hunting, which promoted New Zealand as a sporting paradise, Wevers finds that writing about New Zealand was an essential tool in the colonization process.

Book Synopsis Conflict in Africa by : Adda Bruemmer Bozeman
Download or read book Conflict in Africa written by Adda Bruemmer Bozeman and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do modern Western ideas about the nature of conflict and its resolution apply to Africa? To answer this question, Adda Bozeman examines conflict in Africa south of the Sahara in its many social, political, and cultural aspects, past and present. The author shows how African perspectives on war and diplomacy have evolved under the influence of nonliteracy, tribalism, and a concept of undifferentiated time. In addition, she confirms that indigenous cultural traditions are resurgent everywhere, making it unlikely that African political values will become more closely aligned with those of the West. The two civilizations view conflict differently and have different ways of resolving it. The Africans are more at ease with conflict than their Western counterparts, and they do not see war and peace as the mutually exclusive phenomena that Occidental societies hold them to be. The author concludes that modern Western concepts of conflict not only do not, but cannot, allow for African realities. Originally published in 1976. Book Synopsis Travels Into Print by : Innes M. Keighren
Download or read book Travels Into Print written by Innes M. Keighren and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-05-11 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Age of Exploration and Discovery may well have started in the 15th century, but for the British, the 19th century saw the rise of the British Empire and an explosion in world travel. The travel narratives written during this century were profuse, and by some estimates more travel narratives were written during the first half of the 19th century than in all preceding centuries. These accounts tell of wondrous zoological and botanical finds, of topography never before imagined, and of exotic peoples as well. At the time, there was one publisher, John Murray, known for its utter domination of the travel narrative field. The caliber and profile of their list was known throughout the UK and Europe, and into the US as well. The authors of the house included Jane Austen, Lord Byron, Washington Irving, and Sir Walter Scott. And in its list of travel writing and exploration, the house boasted the authors Charles Darwin and Charles Lyell. Murray s name became as synonymous with travel writing and exploration as it was with literary giants. Travels into Print is a tour through the archives and files of the House of Murray, and marvelous expedition in the geography of travel and exploration writing, knowledge, and reception in the 19th century. Rather than focusing on narratives of a particular region, or scientific area of interest, or particular period, the work uses a source that cuts across all of these areas, the publisher. Steeped in book files, and correspondence about edits, and revisions, sent between Murray and his staff and explorers, the book addresses the ways in which the texts were written, the role of truth in the accounts, correspondence as a form of production, and the writings as travel documents. This is a wonderful history of the book, told from the perspective of a legendary book and author maker. "
