Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Travellers in Scotland The present volume contains a collection, as complete as I have been able to make it, of all the accounts of Scotland published by travellers who visited the country before 1700. Although I have spared no pains to find them, there are doubtless other narratives which have eluded my search, and which would have been an interesting addition to this collection. I specially regret that in my list there is only one traveller from Denmark, and that there are none from Norway or Sweden. It is by the standard of these three countries that Scotland before the eighteenth century can alone be fairly judged; to measure her by the standard of England and France, as the travellers from these countries have naturally done, leaves us with impressions which must to a certain degree be misleading. On inquiry at the best sources, however, both in Norway and Sweden, I have been assured that no traveller in Scotland from these countries before 1700 has left any account of his visit. I here take the opportunity of thanking Mr David Patrick, editor of Chambers's Encyclop dia, and Mr F. H. Groome, editor of the Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland, for their kindness in revising my proofs, and for much valuable assistance besides. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in Scotland: Descriptive of the State of Manners, Literature, and Science Various circumstances have retarded the publication of these Travels. The study of manners, considered under a general point of view, in their relation with the Ancient Constitution, with the nature even of Scotland, have been the subjects which have more particularly captivated my attention in this interesting country. My long residence, the inappreciable happiness which I enjoyed of living in the society of distinguished men, who honoured me with their friendship, and aided me with their counsels; in fine, the knowledge of the various dialects in use in the British Isles, - all these have placed me in a favourable position to observe with advantage. Although divers travellers have given the relation of their rapid journeys in Scotland, this Country is still very imperfectly known. This circumstance alone induced me to endeavour to give just ideas of a part of the globe which presents objects of all kinds proper to excite the curiosity of the public. It was almost impossible to live in Scotland, without observing that nature presents a peculiar character, owing to the geographical situation of the country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook for Travellers in Scotland Encouraged by the reception given to the last two editions of Murray's Handbook for Scotland, the Editor has spared no pains to make this edition still more worthy of the confidence of the travelling public. It has been most carefully revised throughout, and large portions have been added or rewritten. The text, moreover, has been entirely remodelled, the length exceeding that of the previous edition by over seventy pages. The Maps and Plans by Messrs. John Bartholomew co. Have been specially prepared 'for the Handbook, and are more numerous than in the last edition. The Editor's personal knowledge Of Scotland is very extensive, and he has travelled over most of the routes and made most of the excursions described - often several times. On this occasion, moreover, thanks to friends throughout the country, the description of every place of importance has been revised by them, or by other qualified persons resident in the locality. It is impossible to name individually all from whom assistance has been received, but the Editor desires to acknowledge his deep indebtedness to them for their help. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scenes and Stories of the North of Scotland This book has been written with a three-fold aim: to awaken interest, to stimulate, and to amuse. The scenes described have been selected chiefly from parts of Scotland which are remote, or aside, from the ordinary thoroughfares of travel, and are therefore less known than they deserve to be. I have tried to present them as vividly as possible, so as to awaken in others an interest in them. If many more travellers are induced to visit these localities, they will not be disappointed, and I shall be pleased. Again, no one reaps full benefit from travel who does not go to and fro with open eyes, open ears, open mind, and open heart. What a pitiful lot are many of our modern sight "do"-ers, who take in no more from nature than the eye of a calf might do! Not for these do I write; but for very many - I hope the majority after all - who long to taste the sweet secrets of nature, and through these to reach a better knowledge of her great Author. I like to think that God, Who has made all that is beautiful and grand, and has given to us any sense or love of these which we possess, is Himself the prime Admirer of the varied scenery of His world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great North Road: The Old Mail Road to Scotland AT last we are safely arrived at York, perhaps no cause for comment in these days, but a circumstance which once upon a time might almost have warranted a special service of prayer and praise in the Minster. One comes to York as the capital of a country, rather than of a county, for it is a city that seems in more than one sense Metropolitan. Indeed, you cannot travel close upon two hundred miles, even in England and in these days of swift communication, without feeling the need of some dominating city, to act partly as a seat of civil and ecclesiastical government, and partly as a distributing centre and if something of this need is even yet apparent, how much more keenly it must have been felt in those good Old days which were really so bad! A half-way house, so to speak, between those other capitals of London and Edinburgh, York had all the appearance Of a capital in days of Old, and has lost but little of it, in these. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shamrock and Thistle: Or, Young America in Ireland and Scotland; A Story of Travel and Adventure It is not so easy to convey useful and valuable information, even in regard to foreign lands, as it is to tell an interesting or an exciting story. The plan of this and the subsequent volumes of the series includes a certain amount of geo graphical and historical matter, which may not be as accept able to the young reader as exciting incidents of personal adventure; but it is hoped there will be enough of the latter to season the former, and render the useful and valuable palatable to the reader. With more of fear and trembling, therefore, than usual, the author presents shamrock and thistle to his friends, h0ping that its story will please, While its historical and descriptive pages will instruct and benefit them. During those years Miss Wordsworth lived much with her uncle Dr. Cookson, who was a canon of Windsor and a favourite with the Court, and there met with people of more learning and refinement, but not of greater worth, than those she had left in her northern home.
