Book excerpt: The people profiled in this book tell how you can create a positive life when you no longer can work, shop, attend church and public events or socialize without unpleasant, or worse, consequences to your health from low-level chemical exposures. Living with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity is a collection of personal stories describing the lives and coping strategies of people with MCS from all over North America. It describes dozens of alternatives to the kinds of isolation and hopelessness that threaten people with this illness. Laced with inspiration, courage and humor, these stories dispel myths associated with people who have MCS, and will help others to articulate their own experience of the illness to family, friends, coworkers, and health care providers. Foreword by Pamela Reed Gibson of James Madison University. Appendices include a medical overview, resources for further information and support, and a sociologists' view of MCS by Steve Kroll-Smith, director of the Environmental Social Science Research Institute, University of New Orleans. Includes photographs of persons whose lives are described.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical sensitivity (or "multiple chemical sensitivity") describes people with numerous troubling symptoms attributed to environmental factors, from simple housepaint to complex building structures and materials in offices and schools. Many such people are seeking special accommodations, applying for disability benefits, and filing lawsuits claiming that exposure to common foods and chemicals has made them ill. Their efforts are supported by some physicians who refer themselves as clinical ecologists. They use questionable diagnoses and treatment methods, while critics charge that these approaches are bogus and that "chemical sensitivity" is not a valid diagnosis. The complaints associated with chemical sensitivity include depression, irritability, poor memory, fatigue, drowsiness, constipation, sneezing, wheezing, skin rashes, headache, chest pain, pounding heart, swelling, upset stomach, paralysis, AIDS-like illnesses, psychotic experiences, and just about every other symptom noted in medical textbooks. One prominent clinical ecologist even claimed that chemical sensitivity patients may well be human "canaries" on an increasingly poisoned planet, and others have actually labeled chemical sensitivity as a disease. While some people are adversely affected by exposure to some chemicals, there is an overwhelming increase in false claims and reports from misled obsessive patients and opportunistic doctors. Chemical Sensitivity examines this phenomenon in depth and the scientific, legal, ethical, and political issues that surround it. The authors explore the speculations about environmental exposure in the light of scientific knowledge of human physiology, allergy and immunology, pathology, toxicology, and clinical medicine. They evaluate cases of chemical sensitivity relative to controlled tests, and reveal that symptoms were brought on by psychological factors rather than physical ones. Chemical Sensitivity also critically assesses claims related to "sick building syndrome," "mercury-amalgam toxicity," "yeast allergy," and Gulf War syndrome.

Book excerpt: Meet AMBROSIA, one of GITCHI MANITOU’s HELPERS.AMBROSIA tells the story of the BEGINNING. In the BEGINNING, GITCHI MANITOU created the EARTH in which we live. First GITCHI MANITOU created the CREATURES of LIGHTS, MOUNTAINS, TREES, FISH, BIRDS, and MAMMALS. At this time GITCHI MANITOU also created the SHIRES of EDEN, AGARTHA, ATLANTIS, SHAMBHALA, AZTLAN, and CAMELOT. Over time, the CREATURES start to forget about the SHIRES so GITCHI MANITOU creates the TRAIN to take them to the SHIRES so they can better remember them. AMBROSIA is a marvelous story teller, telling all about the CREATURES and the other HELPERS. Besides loving to talk, AMBROSIA also loves to eat and interrupts the story from time to time to talk about what they’re eating right then. Some more memorable quotes: FISH also came in a variety of styles, but it wasn’t as interesting a variety as with TREES. I’m just saying, personally, I don’t think three really counts as variety. FISH might argue that point, but I don’t think they have a strong case. Ah, lunch time! Sanjits is it? Surprise, surprise! You could be so kind as to pass me one of them, pretty please. And some mayonnaise. And some mustard. No, I’m not eating two sanjits. I’m eating one double-decker sanjit. Now, where was I? Oh yes. The CREATURES. Of course there’s no CREATURES on this sanjit. Don’t be daft! Those are my hands! Now what happened in the BEGINNING? Oh yes, I remember. No, don’t remind me. I remember. It was a long time ago, it just took me a few seconds to call up that particular memory. Yes, I know, you all could tell it better. Yes, you were there too. But I’m telling this story. Somebody else can tell the next one. Rating G; Reading Level Easy 5th Grade; Longest Word: Intrinsicalities

Book excerpt: A friend who read The Dancer, said she felt like she was right in the story. When the Dancer danced, she danced. But perhaps you don’t relate to the Dancer, there are plenty of other main characters you can relate to. There’s the Dancer, who is now called the Dancer Magnifique, or just Magnifique for short. There’s her husband, Straight-Spear, the Chief’s son. He dances on his horse, Rides-Like-Thunder. Rides-Like-Thunder is a god. Magnifique and Straight-Spear’s daughter is now Dancer, following in her mother’s footsteps. However, she will dance atop Rides-Like-Thunder, while her mother will not. There’s the Shaman and the Director. Their first meeting didn’t go well, as she swung Dancer’s shoes at him and knocked him out. But now they’re buddy-buddy. They act as Grandparents to Dancer. And there’s Ramon and Raul – Magnifique’s boyfriends before she met Straight-Spear. Now they’re buddy-buddy. In the fourth story, Dancer is left all alone. She is old enough to be all alone. But she’s used to being among several adults, whom she can rely on for help, most of the time. She doesn’t need their help, but just in case. All the adults in her life have left, including Rides-Like-Thunder. They’ve all gone to other worlds for various reasons. They will be back, but for she is alone. And it’s enough to make the Author cry (I forgot to mention that the Author is one of the main characters.) She was all alone, so she did what she always did – she danced. She danced for joy, she danced for strength, she danced for sorrow, she danced for weariness. She danced because she didn’t know what else to do. She had been dancing ever since they left. What had it been, 7, maybe 8 days now? She didn’t know. At some point, she would fall exhausted, asleep, and stop dancing. But not yet. She felt she could go on for ages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of people are discovering they are victims of conditions such as chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, intestinal permeability (a.k.a. leaky gut syndrome), etc.; although these are all relatively new terms to most of us, they are real and debilitating for those who suffer from them. Invisible Illnesses, 2nd Edition covers all these conditions, as well as multiple chemical sensitivities, chemically induced immune system disorders and prescription drug withdrawal syndrome among others. It introduces natural therapies and lifestyle modifications for overcoming these disorders. They emphasize diet, supplementation, non-toxic therapies, environmental modifications, and therapies that encourage the healing process-reserving drugs and surgery as a last resort. With this book, and the guidance of a naturopath or integrative medical doctor, readers can learn what is needed to achieve optimal health, naturally.
