Book Synopsis Warehousing in the Global Supply Chain by : Riccardo Manzini
Download or read book Warehousing in the Global Supply Chain written by Riccardo Manzini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-04 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With increased globalization and offshore sourcing, global supply chain management is becoming an important issue for many businesses as it involves a company's worldwide interests and suppliers rather than simply a local or national orientation. The storage systems significantly affect the level of quality of products, the customer’s service level, and the global logistic cost. The mission of warehousing systems design, control and optimization is to effectively ship products in the right place, at the right time, and in the right quantity (i.e. in any configuration) without any damages or alterations, and minimizing costs. Warehousing in the Global Supply Chain presents and discusses a set of models, tools and real applications, including a few case studies rarely presented with a sufficient detail by other literature, to illustrate the main challenges in warehousing activities. This includes all warehouse operations (from receiving to shipping), problems and issues (e.g. storage allocation, assignment, layout, vehicle routing) for industrial and service systems as parts of global supply chains. Advanced and effective solving methods are also illustrated and the discussed case studies help the reader to quickly apply the proposed models and techniques/algorithms. Warehousing in the Global Supply Chain is useful to managers and practitioners of industry and service sectors for the determination and modeling of the critical issues concerning warehousing systems planning and design. It is a valuable source of information for engineering students, doctoral and post-doctoral students, and researchers of academic institutions who are searching for advanced modeling approaches and solving techniques to complex logistic decision making problems. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travel time models are developed for automated storage/retrieval (AS/R) machines. The S/r machine travels simultaneously horizontally and vertically as it moves along a storage aisle. For randomized storage conditions expected travel times are determined for both single and dual command cycles. Alternative input/output (I/O) locations are considered. Additionally, various dwell point strategies for the storage/retrieval machine are examined. (Author).

Book excerpt: As the third and final contribution, we study the impact of dedicated and class-based storage policy on the performance of MIAPP-AS/RS. We develop mathematical optimization models to minimize the travel time of the crane by changing the assignment of the SKUs to pick positions and storage locations simultaneously. We develop a more tractable solution approach by applying a Benders decomposition approach, as well as an accelerated procedure for the Benders algorithm. We observe high degeneracy for the optimal solution when we use chebyshev metric to calculate the distances. As the result of this degeneracy, we realize that the assignment of SKUs to pick positions does not impact the optimal solution. We also develop closed-form travel time models for MIAPP-AS/RS under a class-based storage policy.

Book Synopsis Performance Evaluation of Warehouses with Automated Storage and Retrieval Technologies by : Xiao Cai
Download or read book Performance Evaluation of Warehouses with Automated Storage and Retrieval Technologies written by Xiao Cai and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation, we study the performance evaluation of two automated warehouse material handling (MH) technologies - automated storage/retrieval system (AS/RS) and autonomous vehicle storage/retrieval system (AVS/RS). AS/RS is a traditional automated warehouse MH technology and has been used for more than five decades. AVS/RS is a relatively new automated warehouse MH technology and an alternative to AS/RS. There are two possible configurations of AVS/RS: AVS/RS with tier-captive vehicles and AVS/RS with tier-to-tier vehicles. We model the AS/RS and both configurations of the AVS/RS as queueing networks. We analyze and develop approximate algorithms for these network models and use them to estimate performance of the two automated warehouse MH technologies. Chapter 2 contains two parts. The first part is a brief review of existing papers about AS/RS and AVS/RS. The second part is a methodological review of queueing network theory, which serves as a building block for our study. In Chapter 3, we model AS/RSs and AVS/RSs with tier-captive vehicles as open queueing networks (OQNs). We show how to analyze OQNs and estimate related performance measures. We then apply an existing OQN analyzer to compare the two MH technologies and answer various design questions. In Chapter 4 and Chapter 5, we present some efficient algorithms to solve SOQN. We show how to model AVS/RSs with tier-to-tier vehicles as SOQNs and evaluate performance of these designs in Chapter 6. AVS/RS is a relatively new automated warehouse design technology. Hence, there are few efficient analytical tools to evaluate performance measures of this technology. We developed some efficient algorithms based on SOQN to quickly and effectively evaluate performance of AVS/RS. Additionally, we present a tool that helps a warehouse designer during the concepting stage to determine the type of MH technology to use, analyze numerous alternate warehouse configurations and select one of these for final implementation.
Book Synopsis On Sequencing Policies for Unit Load Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems by : Jean-Philippe Gagliardi
Download or read book On Sequencing Policies for Unit Load Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems written by Jean-Philippe Gagliardi and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS) performance highly depends on the characteristics of the mechanical equipment. However, once the system has been physically implemented, achieving its maximum efficiency depends on the way the system is operated. This paper focuses on the tactical decisions for an AS/RS. In particular, it shows that request sequencing (i.e., planning the order in which storage and retrieval requests are performed) is of paramount importance in real-life AS/RS performance. This paper reviews and adapts the most popular storage and sequencing policies to dynamic contexts, and then it proposes a mathematical model to simultaneously solve the sequencing and storage location problems. Extensive computational results based on a thorough simulation experiment plan confirm that having the right sequencing can have a measurable impact (up to 23%) on AS/RS performance. When coupled with a storage assignment policy, an integrated approach encompassing request sequencing and storage location decisions can yield a reduction of up to 45% in the total travel time, which represents significant gains in performance.--Résumé de l'éditeur.

Book Synopsis Evaluation of Scheduling Rules for Single- and Dual-dock Automated Storage/retrevial System by : Wen-tsao Wang
Download or read book Evaluation of Scheduling Rules for Single- and Dual-dock Automated Storage/retrevial System written by Wen-tsao Wang and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automated Storage and Retrieval (AS/R) Systems have had a considerable impact on manufacturing and distribution processes. The configuration of AS/R systems vary considerably, depending on the particular application. The effect of different retrieval scheduling rules is analyzed and compared for three different unit-load AS/R systems operating under dual-command cycle. The AS/R systems differ in the number of docks (or input/ output points) per aisle. The system is based on that there are two storage (S1, S2) and two retrieval (R1, R2) sources. The three AS/R systems are: (1) one dock per aisle handling both storage and both retrievals; (2) two docks, one at each end of the aisle, with storage requests from S1 and S2 retrieved by either RI or R2; and (3) two docks, one at each end of the aisle, with storage requests from Si retrieved by RI and storage requests from S2 retrieved by R2. The same scheduling rule, first- come - first serve /closest-open-location, was used for storage. However, retrieval scheduling rules analyzed in the study were first-come-first-serve, nearest-neighbor, and nearest-neighbor with a maximum wait time limit. A simulation model was developed for each combination of scheduling rule and layout and three performance measures were examined--throughput, mean waiting time, and maximum waiting time. The results obtained from this investigation show that the efficiency of the AS/R system can be improved oy the introduction of two docks in each aisle when the input pallets are stored in the closest-open-location, and the input/output pallets for the two docks are independent of each other (layout 3). In general, each performance measure reflects an independent optimum solution for each layout, or combination of layout and scheduling policies. The use of one of these independent solutions can serve to optimize selected AS/R configurations with regard to the given performance measures, but at the same time other performance measures may be affected adversely. Thus, there is no one global optima; the optimum is a function of the performance measure used.
