Book Synopsis Turkish-French Relations by : Aurélien Denizeau
Download or read book Turkish-French Relations written by Aurélien Denizeau and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-02 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores both the history and current diplomatic and foreign policy challenges in Turkish-French relations. By critically analyzing Turkish and French government and archival documents, as well as other primary sources, it reviews the evolution of Turkish-French relations and offers a better understanding of various diplomatic issues, foreign policy decisions, and geopolitical questions. Furthermore, it sheds new light on the significance of domestic political demands for foreign policy decisions and the importance of mutual perceptions in shaping the two countries’ relations. The book is divided into three parts, the first of which studies the history of Turkish-French relations, including the Ottoman Empire’s trade relations with France, France’s relations with the modern Republic of Turkey, and relations during the Cold War and its aftermath. The second part analyzes various dimensions, including diplomatic challenges, the two countries’ foreign policy concepts, geopolitical aspects, economic and trade relations, and their cultural relationship. In turn, the third part presents case studies on more specific issues related to Franco-Turkish relations, including Turkey’s EU accession process, the Armenian and Kurdish issues, and French and Turkish perspectives on the MENA region.

Book Synopsis Architectural Documentation: Built Environment, Modernization, and Turkish Nationalism by : Serra Akboy-Ilk
Download or read book Architectural Documentation: Built Environment, Modernization, and Turkish Nationalism written by Serra Akboy-Ilk and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the backdrop of building a new country, this study explores and evaluates the documentation culture in early republican Turkey. Having fought the Turkish War of Independence (1919–22) against the Allied Powers, the revolutionaries led by legendary leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881-1938) came to engage with the idea of the West and its cultural origin. With the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, the constitution abolished the 600-year-old Ottoman Empire including the dynastic cultural, economic, educational, and governmental institutions. In the redemption of the nation within the modern history of civilizations, cultural Westernization and technical modernization became the model for the newly found nation-state. While the new country became the subject of reformation, historic architecture was called upon to grant the aura of a glorious past to the Turks. Through the materialization of ‘Türk Tarih Tezi’ (the Turkish History Thesis), the founding leaders focused on the origin of Turks and the everlasting spirit of the Turkish state. In this pursuit, architectural heritage signified the formative power to represent the past. Supported by state-agencies, scholars, with supreme patriotic zeal and diligence, travelled across the remotest corners of the country to document and study the historic architecture of the nation. To date, the complicated question of a national identity embodied in the built environment has dominated the contemporary scholarship on early republican historiography. Akboy-İlk’s study, however, distinguishes itself with its focus on architectural documentation, which became an agent of history-writing in the early years of the nation state. Curated by the ideologies of the state, the formal documentation findings extensively informed the republican plot of the modern progress of Turks. For scholars interested in a closer reading of the crossing boundaries between architectural heritage and nation-building in the case of the modernization of Turkey, this book is revealing and provocative in bringing forward architectural documentation, a remarkably overlooked subject in studies of the area.
Book Synopsis Environmental Thought in the Graeco-Roman World by : Orietta Dora Cordovana
Download or read book Environmental Thought in the Graeco-Roman World written by Orietta Dora Cordovana and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-09-23 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debate that has arisen around the concept of the Anthropocene forms the basis of this book. It investigates certain forms of environmental interrelation and 'ecological' sensitivity in the Graeco-Roman world. The notions of environmental depletion, exploitation and loss of plant species, and the ancients' knowledge of species diversity are the main cores of the research. The aim is to interrogate historical sources and diverse evidence and to analyse political and socioeconomic structures, according to a reading focused on possible antecedents, cultural prodromes, alignments of thought or divergencies, with respect to major modern environmental problems and current ecological conceptualisations. As a result, 'sustainable' behaviour, 'biodiversity' and its practical uses can also be identified in ancient societies. In the context of environmental studies, this contribution is placed from the perspective of a historian of antiquity, with the aim of outlining the forma mentis and praxis of the ancients with respect to specific environmental issues. Ancient civilizations always provided ad hoc solutions for specific emergencies, but never developed a comprehensive ecological culture of environmental protection as in modernity.

Book Synopsis Local Power and Female Political Pathways in Turkey by : Lucie G. Drechselová
Download or read book Local Power and Female Political Pathways in Turkey written by Lucie G. Drechselová and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-18 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the “Turkish paradox” – women’s lower representation in local politics than in parliament. By analyzing life stories of 200 female municipal councilors and party representatives, it offers a comprehensive assessment of what makes local politics in Turkey particularly inaccessible to women. It places women’s pathways within the cycles of exclusion, starting by political socialization, going through the candidate recruitment process and continuing after the election. The research presented here brings together gender studies and political sociology and offers novel applications of concepts including intersectionality and biographical availability. It covers all major political parties and diverse local configurations in Turkey, and reveals political strategies of women in conservative parties as well as the reasons behind the exceptionally high representation of women within the pro-Kurdish political parties. The book further sheds some light on the intricate relationship between women’s political activity and regime change in the context of democratic backsliding.
