Book Synopsis Conceptions of Dreaming from Homer to 1800 by : G. W. Pigman III
Download or read book Conceptions of Dreaming from Homer to 1800 written by G. W. Pigman III and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2019-01-31 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conceptions of Dreaming from Homer to 1800 traces the history of ideas about dreaming during the period when the admonitory dream was the main focus of learned interest—from the Homeric epics through the Renaissance—and the period when it began to become a secondary focus—the eighteenth century. The book also considers the two most important dream theorists at the turn of the twentieth century, Sigmund Freud and Sante de Sanctis. While Freud is concerned with questions of what a dream means and how to interpret it, de Sanctis offers a synthesis of nineteenth-century research into what a dream is and represents the Enlightenment transition from particular facts to general laws.
Download or read book Staging Doubt written by Leonie Pawlita and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-09-02 with total page 839 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume considers the influential revival of ancient philosophical skepticism in the 16th and early 17th centuries and investigates, from a comparative perspective, its reception in early modern English, Spanish and French drama, dedicating detailed readings to plays by Shakespeare, Calderón, Lope de Vega, Rotrou, Desfontaines, and Cervantes. While all the plays employ similar dramatic devices for "putting skepticism on stage", the study explores how these dramas, however, give different "answers" to the challenges posed by skepticism in relation to their respective historico-cultural and "ideological" contexts.
Book Synopsis And God Saw That It Was Good (Gen 1:12) by : Ilse Capek
Download or read book And God Saw That It Was Good (Gen 1:12) written by Ilse Capek and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2021-01-25 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, the concept of quality is discussed both in the Bible and in the scholarship that evolved around the Bible. Scholars of various backgrounds analyse the Bible and its narrative and enumerative (or legal) way of qualifying the world around. According to the intrinsic theological view of the Bible, it is God himself who is the touchstone of any qualitative judgement. From literary and historical point of view though, we can - and we often do - judge Bible and things around us differently. The volume presents an intersection of biblical theology, biblical criticism and biblical archaeology in their quest for (their respective renditions of) quality.
Book Synopsis Military Occupation under the Eyes of the Lord by : Holger Berg
Download or read book Military Occupation under the Eyes of the Lord written by Holger Berg and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2010-05-19 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Während u.a.

Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Thomas More's Utopia by :
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Thomas More's Utopia written by and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 817 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas More's Utopia is one of the most iconic, translated, and influential texts of the European Renaissance. This Handbook of specially commissioned and original essays brings together for the first time three different ways of thinking about the book: in terms of its renaissance contexts, its vernacular translations, and its utopian legacies. It has been developed to allow readers to consider these different facets of Utopia in relation to each other and to provide fresh and original contributions to our understanding of the book's creation, vernacularization, and afterlives. In so doing, it provides an integrated overview of More's text, as well as new contributions to the range of scholarship and debates that Utopia continues to attract. An especially innovative feature is that it allows readers to follow Utopia across time and place, unpacking the often-revolutionary moments that encouraged its translation by new generations of writers as far afield as France, Russia, Japan, and China. The Handbook is organized in four sections: on different aspects of the origins and contexts of Utopia in the 1510s; on histories of its translation into different vernaculars in the early modern and modern eras; and on various manifestations of utopianism up to the present day. The Handbook's Introduction outlines the biography of More, the key strands of interpretation and criticism relating to the text, the structure of the Handbook, and some of its recurring themes and issues. An appendix provides an overview of Utopia for readers new to the text.
Book Synopsis Res publica Europa by : Christopher Balme
Download or read book Res publica Europa written by Christopher Balme and published by Verlag Theater der Zeit. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quo vadis Europa? And where are the independent performing arts heading? Driven by values such as tolerance and openness, what power do the independent performing arts possess in a climate dominated by Euroscepticism? Are those values essential for Europe and if so, how can they be atrengthened? These were the questions focussed on at the IETM's Plenary Meeting Munich (International Network for Contemporary Performing Arts) which is documented in this bi-lingual book. Central to the reflexions around the role of the performing arts in Europe were the topics "Post-colonialism", "Diversity" and "Visions for the Future". Including contributions by Ulrike Guérot, Robert Menasse and Kathrin Röggla. Quo vadis Europa?
Download or read book Recounting Deviance written by Jörg Rogge and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2016-05-31 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do historical sources narrate or recount deviance? Is there a relationship between the manner in which divergent behaviour is recounted and the type of source in which this behaviour is presented? The articles present examples of the recounting of deviance by using, amongst others, sources such as chronicles, travel accounts and court records from 15th century England, 15th/16th century Germany, 17th century Spain, 17th/18th century Venice and 17th/18th century Italy and France. It can be asserted that different types of narrative patterns to recount deviance occur intermingled in the cases discussed.
Book Synopsis Arno Schmidt's Zettel's Traum: An Analysis (Studies in German Literature, Linguistics, and Culture) by : Volker Max Langbehn
Download or read book Arno Schmidt's Zettel's Traum: An Analysis (Studies in German Literature, Linguistics, and Culture) written by Volker Max Langbehn and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2003 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arno Schmidt (1914-1979) is considered one of the most daring and influential writers of postwar Germany; the Germanist Jeremy Adler has called him a "giant of postwar German literature." Schmidt was awarded the Fontane Prize in 1964 and the Goethe Prize in 1973, and his early fiction has been translated into English to high critical acclaim, but he is not a well-known figure in the English-speaking world, where his complex work remains at the margins of critical inquiry. Volker Langbehn's book introduces Schmidt to the English-speaking audience, with primary emphasis on his most famous novel, Zettel's Traum. One reviewer called the book an "elephantine monster" because of its unconventional size (folio format), length (1334 pages and over 10 million characters), and unique presentation of text in the form of notes, typewritten pages, parallel columns, and collages. The novel narrates the life of the main characters, Daniel Pagenstecher, Paul Jacobi and his wife Wilma, and their teenage daughter Franziska. In discussing the life and works of Edgar Allan Poe, the four engage in the problems connected with a translation of Poe. Langbehn's study investigates how literary language can mediate or account for the world of experiences and for concepts. Schmidt's use of unconventional presentation formats challenges us to analyze how we think about reading and writing literary texts. Instead of viewing such texts as a representation of reality, Schmidt's novel destabilizes this unquestioned mode of representation, posing a radical challenge to what contemporary literary criticism defines as literature. No comprehensive study of Zettel's Traum exists in English.Volker Langbehn is assistant professor of German at San Francisco State University.

Book Synopsis Kleine Schriften zur hellenistisch-römischen Philosophie by : Woldemar Görler
Download or read book Kleine Schriften zur hellenistisch-römischen Philosophie written by Woldemar Görler and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents 17 articles by Woldemar Görler, published during the last 25 years, some of them not easily accessible hitherto. Most of them treat details of the history of the Hellenistic Academy and Cicero. Other papers explore the aftermath of Hellenistic thought in Lucilius, Lucretius, and Seneca, the literary form of Roman philosophical treatises, and Cicero’s personal interpretation of Academic scepticism. All contributions are based on close reading of the source material. No attempt is made to harmonize conflicting evidence. Instead, different stages of the school discussions and some gradual changes in philosophical doctrine emerge more clearly. Special attention is paid to the conversion of Greek terms into Latin, in some cases implying unexpected consequences in meaning.
