Book excerpt: Football is probably the most widespread sport in the world: youngsters, adults, women, amateurs, beginners, professionals all make up a legion of practitioners. Lesions associated with football are on the increase and their typology has also changed over the years. Football, like many other sports, has undergone major changes: the increase in the intensity and speed of the game, the modern training methodologies, the technical and tactical innovations are all factors contributing to increased risks of traumatic injury. The footballers, the trainers, the sport's medical staff are asking for greater information and knowledge on the traumatic lesions associated with this sport. The primary role of those who are concerned with the health of footballers is to enforce preventive measures to reduce wherever possible the risks of trauma.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original articles included in the present book have primarily been taken from papers presented at the International Advanced Course, more precise the Master on Sports Cardiology, held in Rome from November 27 to December 15 1995 at the School of Sport and Institute of Sport Sciences of the Italian National Olympic Committee. The contributions, written by internationally acknowledged scientists, appeared after extensive and careful revision by the Authors, and represent current and highly profitable scientific material. The incentive to publish this work came from Springer-Verlag, a renowned publi sher, and the articles have been compiled in Advances in Sports Cardiology. The present volume is an easy-to-consult, comprehensive and up-to-date refe rence. Possible future developments in cardiovascular evaluation in athletes have been covered, too. The cardiological evaluation of athletes represents a more than 30 years-old discipline in"Italy, with legal implications, which compel physicians in this field to investigate in each individual athlete the possible, innermost causes of cardiovascular abnormality and to express a circumstantial prognostic asses sment. Cardiologists in this field should have an extensive background in phy siology but should also be aware of the indications and limits of the instrumen tal diagnostic procedures used in clinical practice as well as of the distinction between normal physiological adaptation to exercise and training and a true pathological cardiac process. Hence, sound basis in physiology with a major interest in clinical practice distinguishes sports cardiology as a new and origi nal discipline.

Unlike conventional grammars, it gives special attention to those areas of vocabulary and grammar which cause most difficulty to English-speakers. Careful consideration is given throughout to questions of style, register, and politeness which are essential to achieving an appropriate level of formality or informality in writing and speech. It surveys the contemporary linguistic scene in Italy and gives ample space to the new varieties of Italian that are emerging in modern Italy. The influence of the dialects in shaping the development of Italian is also acknowledged. Clear, readable and easy to consult via its two indexes, this is an essential reference for learners seeking access to the finer nuances of the Italian language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Obesity is currently regarded as one of the major health challenges of the developed world. Excess body weight is an important risk factor for morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, musculoskeletal disorders and even psychiatric problems and is estimated to cause nearly 3 million deaths per year worldwide. Obesity is not necessarily associated with comorbidities: there are indeed metabolically healthy obese individuals. Thus, we need to consider individuals presenting simple with obesity separately from those at risk of developing or who have already developed complex clinical states potentially leading to disability. Comorbidities can tip the balance of independence in patients who already have functional limitations mainly due to the excess of mass itself or who develop conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, where an abnormal metabolism of adipose tissue prevails. Morbid obesity with comorbidities leading to disability represents a real social and economic burden for National Health Systems worldwide. The presence of multiple and associated comorbidities often represents an obstacle to being admitted to hospitals for the treatment of metabolic diseases. On the other hand, clinical units with optimal standards for the treatment of pathological conditions in normal-weight patients are often structurally and technologically inadequate for the care of patients with extreme obesity. The aim of this book is to focus on the pathophysiological and rehabilitative aspects of disabling obesity, highlighting multidisciplinary rehabilitation interventions as key to counteracting the disabling aspects of complicated obesity.
