Book Synopsis Writings on the Sober Life by : Alvise Cornaro
Download or read book Writings on the Sober Life written by Alvise Cornaro and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alvise Cornaro (c.1484–1566), well born in Padua, was an energetic, religious man of formidable entrepreneurial skills. Critically ill – possibly with diabetes – around age 40, he resolved to abandon his sensual life. The healthier controlled diet led to his recovery, and later brought him to share this sober regime through his treatise, La vita sobria (1558). Its publication, with useful homilies for living to 100 years – proper lifestyle and proper personal diet – was a worldwide success, and his adoption of Galen's “quantity and quality,” while avoiding excess in food or drink, sound prescient to today's reader. This edition offers the most coherent, uncensored, and complete rendering of this Early Modern classic ever available in English, with Cornaro's Aggionta (“Addition”) translated here for the first time. An introduction and essay by the late scholar Marisa Milani offer biographical analysis for his theory and a history of its English editions. Also presented are letters by Cornaro's contemporaries commenting on the treatise, in addition to his eulogy (now viewed as having been written by Cornaro himself). A foreword by award-winning health journalist Greg Critser speaks to the continuing relevance of Cornaro's sixteenth-century style of self-help. Marisa Milani (1935–1997) was an eminent scholar, most notably on the Pavano poets and language. Her earlier works on Ruzzante, posthumously collected as El pì bel favelare del mondo: Saggi ruzzantiani, led to her 1983 critical edition on Alvise Cornaro.
Book Synopsis Cultures of Empire: Rethinking Venetian Rule, 1400–1700 by :
Download or read book Cultures of Empire: Rethinking Venetian Rule, 1400–1700 written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-07-27 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates perceptions, modes, and techniques of Venetian rule in the early modern Eastern Mediterranean (1400–1700). Against the backdrop of the controversial notion of the Venetian realm as a colonial empire, essays from a range of specialists examine how Venice negotiated control over the territories, resources, and traditions of different empires (Byzantine, Roman, Mamluk, Ottoman) while developing its own claims of authority. Focusing in particular on questions of belonging and status in the Venetian overseas territories, the volume incorporates observations on the daily realities of Venetian rule: how did Venice negotiate claims of authority in light of former and ongoing imperial belongings? What was the status of colonial subjects and ships in the metropolis and in foreign territories? In what ways did Venice accept and continue old forms of imperial belonging? Did subordinate entities join in a shared communal identity? The volume opens new perspectives on Venetian rule at the crossroads of empire and early modern statehood: a polity negotiating and entangling empire. Contributors are Housni Alkhateeb Shehada, Georg Christ, Giacomo Corazzol, Nicholas Davidson, Renard Gluzman, Deborah Howard, David Jacoby (z’’l), Marianna Kolyvà, Franz-Julius Morche, Reinhold C. Mueller, Monique O’Connell, Gerassimos D. Pagratis, Tassos Papacostas, Maria Pia Pedani (†), Dorit Raines, and E. Natalie Rothman.

Book Synopsis Secrets and Knowledge in Medicine and Science, 1500–1800 by : Alisha Rankin
Download or read book Secrets and Knowledge in Medicine and Science, 1500–1800 written by Alisha Rankin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secrets played a central role in transformations in medical and scientific knowledge in early modern Europe. As a new fascination with novelty began to take hold from the late fifteenth century, Europeans thirsted for previously unknown details about the natural world: new plants, animals, and other objects from nature, new recipes for medical and alchemical procedures, new knowledge about the human body, and new facts about the way nature worked. These 'secrets' became popular items of commerce and trade, as the quest for new and exclusive bits of information met the vibrant early modern marketplace. Whether disclosed widely in print or kept more circumspect in manuscripts, secrets helped drive an expanding interest in acquiring knowledge throughout early modern Europe. Bringing together international scholars, this volume provides a pan-European and interdisciplinary overview on the topic. Each essay offers significant new interpretations of the role played by secrets in their area of specialization. Chapters address key themes in early modern history and the history of medicine, science and technology including: the possession, circulation and exchange of secret knowledge across Europe; alchemical secrets and laboratory processes; patronage and the upper-class market for secrets; medical secrets and the emerging market for proprietary medicines; secrets and cosmetics; secrets and the body and finally gender and secrets.

Book excerpt: A sequel to Tomita’s A Bibliographical Catalogue of Italian Books Printed in England 1558-1603, this volume provides the data for the succeeding 40 years (during the reign of King James I and Charles I) and contributes to the study of Anglo-Italian relations in literature through entries on 187 Italian books (335 editions) printed in England. The Catalogue starts with the books published immediately after the death of Queen Elizabeth I on 24 March 1603, and ends in 1642 with the closing of English theatres. It also contains 45 Elizabethan books (75 editions), which did not feature in the previous volume. Formatted along the lines of Mary Augusta Scott's Elizabethan Translations from the Italian (1916), and adopting Philip Gaskell's scientific method of bibliographical description, this volume provides reliable and comprehensive information about books and their publication, viewed in a general perspective of Anglo-Italian transactions in Jacobean and part of Caroline England.

Book excerpt: Positive Ageing and Learning from Centenarians evaluates the mechanisms of positive ageing in a uniquely interdisciplinary way to explore the question of how we age and how some people age successfully. Drawing together the findings of recognised longevity researchers from around the world, the book applies an integrated vision to educational and social aspects of human ageing. It examines research into centenarians, and considers most of the disciplines related to longevity and healthy aging and aspects such as education, psychology, philosophy, anthropology, demography, sociology, economics as well as those related to nutrition and biological factors of longevity. The book examines how the results of these scientific investigations could improve the well-being of the oldest olds in the future, especially in the context of ageing societies. It provides an answer to the question of what we can learn from centenarians and what lessons we can from their lifestyle, which can contribute to live longer, better and happier. Based on cutting-edge research, the book will be highly relevant reading for researchers, academics and students in the field of ageing and longevity, mental health research, health science, gerontology and psychology.

Book Synopsis Under Construction by : Eike-Christian Heine
Download or read book Under Construction written by Eike-Christian Heine and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2015 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On construction sites the world is altered in a very solid, material way. This is not the whole story, of course: if someone builds a house, a railroad or any other thing, there is more under construction that the mere object itself. With spade and excavator contemporary imaginations, visions and historical concepts are equally reshaped or renewed. Interventions into the physical landscape are always accompanied by interventions into the imaginary landscape. Here, eleven authors from seven European countries examine the discursive alongside the performative construction of reality when things are being built.
