Book Synopsis Telomeres and Telomerase by : Predrag Slijepcevic
Download or read book Telomeres and Telomerase written by Predrag Slijepcevic and published by S. Karger AG (Switzerland). This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Telomeres are essential functional elements of eukaryotic chromosomes. Their fundamental biological role as protectors of chromosome stability was identified for the first time in the 1930s by Hermann Muller and Barbara McClintock based on pioneering cytological experiments. Modern molecular research carried out more recently revealed that telomeres and telomerase play important roles in processes such as carcinogenesis and cellular senescence. This special issue presents the most recent developments in this highly active field of research. It is becoming increasingly clear that molecular pathways involved in regulation of telomere length and structure are functionally linked with pathways involved in DNA damage response, cellular stress response, chromatin organization and perhaps even pathways that regulate evolutionary chromosome rearrangements. The above functional link is explored by the leading experts in the field of telomere biology. Cell biologists, molecular biologists, oncologists, gerontologists, and radiobiologists with an interest in the role of telomeres/telomerase will appreciate the up-to-date information in this publication.
Book Synopsis The Obesity Paradox by : Carl J. Lavie, MD
Download or read book The Obesity Paradox written by Carl J. Lavie, MD and published by Scribe Publications. This book was released on 2014-03-31 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of us think that longevity hinges on maintaining a normal Body Mass Index. But research conducted over the last decade hit the media recently with explosive news: overweight and even moderately obese people with certain chronic diseases — from heart disease to cancer — often live longer and fare better than normal-weight individuals with the same ailments. In this groundbreaking book, Carl Lavie, MD, reveals the science behind the obesity paradox and shows us how to achieve maximum health rather than minimum weight. Lavie not only explains how extra fat provides additional fuel to help fight illness; he also argues that we’ve gotten so used to framing health issues in terms of obesity that we overlook other potential causes of disease. The Obesity Paradox will change the conversation about fat — and what it means to be healthy.

This comparison reveals clear differences between the two corpora, with the textbooks containing a much higher proportion of concrete everyday words than the COBUILD texts and a lack of many of the common abstract words need for an understanding of the language of the news media. of certain of the linguistic criteria for text typology suggested by D.Biber. With the help of these criteria, it was possible to show that the textbooks tend to be interactive and to have situated content and reported style, while the COBUILD texts seem to be edited, to have abstract content and more immediate style. in terms of the linguistic differences between British and American English. It was found that the linguistic orientation of both corpora is overwhelmingly British. described above, among them a list of the 9330 textbook lemmas with a fequency of 5 or more. Each lemma appears with its frequencies from the textbook and the COBUILD corpora and a difference coefficient indicating its relative frequency in the two corpora.
