Book excerpt: This report summarizes the results of the National Signal Timing Organization Project initiated by the Federal Highway Administration as a fuel conservation effort. The objectives of this project are: 1) to establish credible data on the effectiveness of signal timing optimization; 2) to make signal timing optimization projects easier to do; and 3) to define the resources (cost, level of staff, computer, etc.) required to undertake a signal timing optimization project, so that traffic engineers and administrators can more effectively budget for this activity. The project consisted of the development of the TRANSYT-7F signal timing optimization program User's Manual, and training course, and application of the program in 11 cities nationwide to evaluate the effectiveness of the poptimized signal timing plans and to collect data on the needed resources.

Book Synopsis Freeway Traffic Modelling and Control by : Antonella Ferrara
Download or read book Freeway Traffic Modelling and Control written by Antonella Ferrara and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-12 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides an extended overview of modelling and control approaches for freeway traffic systems, moving from the early methods to the most recent scientific results and field implementations. The concepts of green traffic systems and smart mobility are addressed in the book, since a modern freeway traffic management system should be designed to be sustainable. Future perspectives on freeway traffic control are also analysed and discussed with reference to the most recent technological advancements The most widespread modelling and control techniques for freeway traffic systems are treated with mathematical rigour, but also discussed with reference to their performance assessment and to the expected impact of their practical usage in real traffic systems. In order to make the book accessible to readers of different backgrounds, some fundamental aspects of traffic theory as well as some basic control concepts, useful for better understanding the addressed topics, are provided in the book. This monograph can be used as a textbook for courses on transport engineering, traffic management and control. It is also addressed to experts working in traffic monitoring and control areas and to researchers, technicians and practitioners of both transportation and control engineering. The authors’ systematic vision of traffic modelling and control methods developed over decades makes the book a valuable survey resource for freeway traffic managers, freeway stakeholders and transportation public authorities with professional interests in freeway traffic systems. Advances in Industrial Control reports and encourages the transfer of technology in control engineering. The rapid development of control technology has an impact on all areas of the control discipline. The series offers an opportunity for researchers to present an extended exposition of new work in all aspects of industrial control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this volume enters the debate on human behaviour in the form of neural networks in a spatial context. As most transportation research techniques had been developed in the 1960s and 1970s, these authors sought to bring that research into the modern era. Featuring 17 articles from 37 contributors, it begins with an overview and proceeds to examine aspects of travel behaviour, traffic flow and traffic management.
Book Synopsis Artificial Intelligence and Renewables Towards an Energy Transition by : Mustapha Hatti
Download or read book Artificial Intelligence and Renewables Towards an Energy Transition written by Mustapha Hatti and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 997 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proceedings book emphasizes adopting artificial intelligence-based and sustainable energy efficiency integrated with clear objectives, to involve researchers, students, and specialists in their development and implementation adequately in achieving objectives. The integration of artificial intelligence into renewable energetic systems would allow the rapid development of a knowledge-based economy suitable to the energy transition, while fully integrating the renewables into the global economy. This is how artificial intelligence has hand in by conceptualizing this transition and above all by saving time. The knowledge economy is valuated within the smart cities, which are fast becoming the favorite places where the energy transition will take place efficiently and intelligently by implementing integrated approaches to energy saving and energy supply and integrated urban approaches that go beyond individual interventions in buildings or transport modes using information and communication technologies.
