Book excerpt: This book gives an introduction to main ideas used in the physics of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The links between basic theoretical concepts (discussed gradually from the elementary to more advanced level) and the results of experiments are outlined, so that experimentalists may learn more about the foundations of the models used by them to fit and interpret the data, while theoreticians may learn more about how different theoretical ideas are used in practical applications. The main task of the book is to collect the available information and establish a uniform picture of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The properties of hot and dense matter implied by this picture are discussed comprehensively. In particular, the issues concerning the formation of the quark-gluon plasma in present and future heavy-ion experiments are addressed.

Book excerpt: The use of high-pT particles as calibrated probes has proven to be an effective tool for understanding the properties of the system produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions. In this thesis, two such measurements are presented using the PHOBOS detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC): 1. The transverse momentum spectra of charged particles produced near mid rapidity in Cu+Cu collisions with center-of-mass energies of 62.4 and 200 GeV per nucleon pair 2. Two-particle correlations with a high transverse momentum trigger particle (pT> 2.5 GeV=c) in Au+Au collisions at ... 200 GeV over the broad longitudinal acceptance of the PHOBOS detector ... In central Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV, the single-particle yields are suppressed at high-pT by a factor of about five compared to p+p collisions scaled by the number of binary collisions. This is typically understood to be a consequence of energy loss by high-pT partons in the dense QCD medium, as such a suppression is absent in d+Au collisions. In Cu+Cu collisions, the nuclear modification factor, RAA, has been measured relative to p+p data as a function of collision centrality. For the same number of participating nucleons (Npart), RAA is essentially the same for the Cu+Cu and Au+Au systems over the measured range of pT, in spite of the significantly different geometries. At high-pT, the similarity between the two systems can be described by simple, geometric models of parton energy loss. Two-particle angular correlations are a more powerful tool for examining how highpT jets lose energy and how the medium is modified by the deposited energy. In central Au+Au collisions, particle production correlated with a high-pT trigger is strongly modified compared to p+p. Not only is the away-side yield much broader in, the nearside peak of jet fragments now sits atop an unmistakable 'ridge' of correlated partners extending continuously and undiminished all the way to = 4.

Book excerpt: Quantum Chromodynamics predicts that the hot and dense matter produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP), behaves as a deconfined state of quarks and gluons. Since 1980's it was predicted that quarkonia are suppressed due to screening effects in the QGP, making quarkonia a good tool to probe the plasma.ALICE is the only experiment at the LHC that was designed and built to characterize the physics of the QGP. The muon spectrometer, one of the detectors in ALICE, is used to measure the quarkonia production at forward rapidity. In this thesis the efficiency of the tracking chambers of the muon spectrometer is studied along one year of data taking. The results obtained from real data are compared to simulations in order to compute the systematic uncertainties associated to the tracking apparatus.A complete analysis of the inclusive J/psi --> mu^+ mu^- production in the 2011 Pb-Pb collisions is also presented. The study includes the signal extraction, normalization and acceptance times efficiency corrections. An important part is dedicated to the quantify the systematic uncertainties arising from different sources. The resulting R_{AA} and p_{T} are compared to previous experiments and also to theoretical models.

Book excerpt: FNAL E866/NuSea has made a number of measurements of J/[psi] and[psi][prime] production by 800 GeV protons on fixed targets of Be, Fe and W. Preliminary results are presented and discussed in the context of nuclear effects such as energy loss and multiple scattering of the partons, absorption of the produced c[bar c] pairs, and shadowing. Production mechanisms involving color-singlet or color-octet states for the c[bar c] pair which eventually forms a J/[psi] or[psi][prime] have implications on the strength of absorption in the nucleus. These nuclear dependence studies arc critical in furthering the authors understanding of these processes towards future measurements at RHIC and the LHC, where J/[psi] suppression is predicted to be an important signature of the creation of quark-gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions.

Es gibt sechs verschiedene Quark-Arten (flavours): up, down, strange, charm, bottom und top.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors review the search for the quark-gluon plasma using the signal of the suppression of J/[psi] production in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Recent anomalous J/[psi] suppression in high-energy Pb-Pb collisions observed by the NA50 Collaboration are examined and compared with earlier results from pA and nucleus-nucleus collisions with heavy ions of smaller mass numbers. The anomalous suppression of J/[psi] production in Pb-Pb collisions can be explained as due to the occurrence of a new phase of strong J/[psi] absorption, which sets in when the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions at a spatial point exceeds about 4 and corresponds to a local energy density of about 3.4 GeV/fm3.
