Book excerpt: Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is increasingly being discussed as an affordable way for cities to build sustainable rapid transit infrastructure. This is the first book to examine the opportunities presented by BRT along with the significant challenges cities face in the implementation of successful systems. The difficulties can be myriad: new institutional relationships have to be developed among governments, operators, and the public; projects have to be designed and implemented to handle large passenger flows in the most efficient manner possible; and these changes are not taking place on a blank slate, but within existing transportation systems, political and cultural contexts, and urban development patterns. Addressing these challenges from an international perspective and across a range of disciplines, from urban planning to public policy and economics, contributors offer technical solutions to specific problems and identify what still needs to be done to realize their vision of global sustainable transport.

Book excerpt: It is a unique story. A book like this was never written until now. You will find in it the astonishing truth and revelation about many aspects and facts of life you didn't think before or were afraid to think about; you will be pleased and satisfied that finally, the daring truth is revealed clearly and naked as a new born baby but with the power of a Hercules. Going again back to mythology for an example, if the many troublesome, frightening aspects of today's so called civilized, modern human society is a Goliath, those speakers in the book are the little David overpowering in a surprising way the giant of evil, lies, open and hidden cruelty, unbelievable ignorance and stupidity of which the human society is full, at every step. Some independent and objective, wise observers from the outside of the human species, after dissecting all the depicted troubles with the accuracy and the precision of a surgeon, present the rational solutions which for some may look farfetched, but for the bright minds they appear in all their majestic realism of the possible practical implementation, if the full power of intelligence and will, is used. Please, read this book, you will not regret a bit, you will enjoy every moment of it and will get food for thought as never before. And at some points you will be amused too.

Book excerpt: Policy-making for urban transport and planning of economies in the developing world present major challenges for countries facing rapid urbanisation and rampant motorisation, alongside growing commitments to sustainability. These challenges include: coping with financial deficits, providing for the poor, dealing meaningfully with global warming and energy shortages, addressing traffic congestion and related land use issues, adopting green technologies and adjusting equitably to the impacts of globalisation. This book presents a contemporary analysis of these challenges and new workable responses to the urban transport problems they spawn.

The fight against climate change therefore forces us to look for alternatives in the way we move. Different alternative fuels are discussed in this book: from liquid and gaseous biofuels to electricity. Moreover, waste to fuel processes are another option to produce a significant amount of fuels. In the spirit of this book, there is not only collecting different alternatives, but creativity is also promoted in the readers of this book, so that they take an active part of the solution necessary to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past ten years, the study of mobility has demonstrated groundbreaking approaches and new research patterns. These investigations criticize the concept of mobility itself, suggesting the need to merge transport and communication research, and to approach the topic with novel instruments and new methodologies. Following the debates on the role of users in shaping transport technology, new mobility research includes debates from sociology, planning, economy, geography, history, and anthropology. This edited volume examines how users, policy-makers, and industrial managers have organized and continue to organize mobility, with a particularly attention to Europe, North America, and Asia. Taking a long-term and comparative perspective, the volume brings together thirteen chapters from the fields of urban studies, history, cultural studies, and geography. Covering a variety of countries and regions, these chapters investigate how various actors have shaped transport systems, creating models of mobility that differ along a number of dimensions, including public vs. private ownership and operation as well as individual vs. collective forms of transportation. The contributions also examine the extent to which initial models have created path dependencies in terms of technology, physical infrastructure, urban development, and cultural and behavioral preferences that limit subsequent choices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume discuses urban transport issues, policies, and initiatives in twelve of the world’s major emerging economies – Brazil, China, Colombia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia, South Africa, Turkey, and Vietnam - countries with large populations that have recently experienced large changes in urban structure, motorization and all the associated social, economic, and environmental impacts in positive and negative senses. Contributions on each of these twelve countries focus on one or more major cities per country. This book aims to fill a gap in the transport literature that is crucial to understanding the needs of a large portion of the world’s urban population, especially in view of the southward shift in economic power. Readers will develop a better understanding of urban transport problems and policies in nations where development levels are below those of richer countries (mainly in the northern hemisphere) but where the rate of economic growth is often increasing at a faster rate than the wealthiest nations.
