Book Synopsis The Urban Transport Crisis in Emerging Economies by : Dorina Pojani
Download or read book The Urban Transport Crisis in Emerging Economies written by Dorina Pojani and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume discuses urban transport issues, policies, and initiatives in twelve of the world’s major emerging economies – Brazil, China, Colombia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia, South Africa, Turkey, and Vietnam - countries with large populations that have recently experienced large changes in urban structure, motorization and all the associated social, economic, and environmental impacts in positive and negative senses. Contributions on each of these twelve countries focus on one or more major cities per country. This book aims to fill a gap in the transport literature that is crucial to understanding the needs of a large portion of the world’s urban population, especially in view of the southward shift in economic power. Readers will develop a better understanding of urban transport problems and policies in nations where development levels are below those of richer countries (mainly in the northern hemisphere) but where the rate of economic growth is often increasing at a faster rate than the wealthiest nations.
Book Synopsis The Geography of Transport Systems by : Jean-Paul Rodrigue
Download or read book The Geography of Transport Systems written by Jean-Paul Rodrigue and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobility is fundamental to economic and social activities such as commuting, manufacturing, or supplying energy. Each movement has an origin, a potential set of intermediate locations, a destination, and a nature which is linked with geographical attributes. Transport systems composed of infrastructures, modes and terminals are so embedded in the socio-economic life of individuals, institutions and corporations that they are often invisible to the consumer. This is paradoxical as the perceived invisibility of transportation is derived from its efficiency. Understanding how mobility is linked with geography is main the purpose of this book. The third edition of The Geography of Transport Systems has been revised and updated to provide an overview of the spatial aspects of transportation. This text provides greater discussion of security, energy, green logistics, as well as new and updated case studies, a revised content structure, and new figures. Each chapter covers a specific conceptual dimension including networks, modes, terminals, freight transportation, urban transportation and environmental impacts. A final chapter contains core methodologies linked with transport geography such as accessibility, spatial interactions, graph theory and Geographic Information Systems for transportation (GIS-T). This book provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the field, with a broad overview of its concepts, methods, and areas of application. The accompanying website for this text contains a useful additional material, including digital maps, PowerPoint slides, databases, and links to further reading and websites. The website can be accessed at: http://people.hofstra.edu/geotrans This text is an essential resource for undergraduates studying transport geography, as well as those interest in economic and urban geography, transport planning and engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a collection of research works on the continuing requirement for better urban transport systems, this volume consists of papers presented at the 24th International Conference on Urban Transport and the Environment. The need for better urban transport systems and for a healthier environment has resulted in a wide range of research originating from many different countries. These studies highlight the importance of innovative systems, new approaches and original ideas, which need to be thoroughly tested and critically evaluated before they can be implemented in practice. Moreover, there is a growing need for integration with telecommunications systems and IT applications in order to improve safety, security and efficiency. This book also addresses the need to solve important pollution problems associated with urban transport in order to achieve a healthier environment. The variety of topics covered in this volume reflects the complex interaction of the urban transport systems with their environment and the need to establish integrated strategies. The aim is to arrive at optimal socio-economic solutions while reducing the negative environmental impacts of current transportation systems.
Book Synopsis Making Choices about Hydrogen by : Lynn Krieger Mytelka
Download or read book Making Choices about Hydrogen written by Lynn Krieger Mytelka and published by IDRC. This book was released on 2008 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-1990s, the emergence of a hydrogen economy and the speed with which it will arrive have been vigorously debated. As a disruptive technology, dominant designs for the production, storage and distribution of hydrogen have not yet been established. Neither have performance characteristics been achieved to compete with the existing combustion engine, though the efficiency and durability of hydrogen fuel cells are improving. This publication highlights the uncertainties involved in making choices about hydrogen and fuel cells in planning the development policies on national energy, environment and transport sector.--Publisher's description.
Book Synopsis Transport Systems, Policy and Planning by : Rodney Tolley

Divided into four parts, each considering a different aspect of transport geography. The first part outlines the basic geography of transport and examines transport and spatial structures, focusing upon the varying contributions made by transport to industrial, agricultural and urban development. Part two moves to consider specific transport systems at both national and international scales, drawing on studies from industrialised and developing nations and discussing the effects upon transport of the political changes in the former USSR and Eastern Europe. The third part examines some of the many problems of transport and urban and rural areas using specific examples to illustrate the contrasting difficulties and evaluate current urban transportation planning methods.
Book Synopsis The Quality of the Urban Road Transportation System in Port Harcourt by : Chukwuebuka Okafor
Download or read book The Quality of the Urban Road Transportation System in Port Harcourt written by Chukwuebuka Okafor and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2022-10-24 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2021 in the subject Urban and Regional Planning, grade: B, , language: English, abstract: This research work critically assesses the quality of urban road transportation system in Port Harcourt Metropolis. It does so by defining transportation as the means of conveying, conveyance or been conveyed from one place to another and it involves humans, animals and objects. It also addresses all necessary infrastructures that must be functional to make the transport system in the study area efficient. Excessive traffic demand is choking the study area even when car ownership is moderate due to poor city structure and narrow roads. Further, increased traffic demand is expected in the study area by the year 2030. The study in achieving its goal employed the mixed method design and the case study method, whereby both qualitative and quantitative research components were used in the data analysis and the central point of the findings is that the quality of road transport service in the study area is declining despite the recent development in the transportation sector. Hence, this study, advocates for more relevant and vital transportation infrastructures that will aid the efficiency of urban road transport services in Port Harcourt Metropolis and also the culture of maintenance should be inculcated to ensure its durability. The study concludes that quality of urban road transportation system in Port Harcourt Metropolis City will increase to a very high level and will in turn increase the economic state of the city if all relevant transport infrastructures and policies are put in place both by the state and federal government in Nigeria.

Book Synopsis Problems and Prospects of Sustaining Democracy in Nigeria by : Bamidele A. Ojo
Download or read book Problems and Prospects of Sustaining Democracy in Nigeria written by Bamidele A. Ojo and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past few years have been very traumatic ones for many Nigerians. With the exception of those in power or close to the seat of power, the changes of 1998 were a welcome relief given the tyranny and repression that the country had suffered under General Abacha. With many people in prison and more in exile, the death of Abacha was received with a sigh of relief. Many observers have seen the resilience that has come to signify the strength and potential of this once 'giant of Africa', as well as the destruction and the socio-political and economic decay of the past decades. The Nigerian people have endured the exploitation of their rights due to the lack of democratic leadership, and with this in mind, they have been called to attention to fight for their country.
