Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existing textbooks on plasma physics usually contain only a minor contribution devoted to plasma transport. The aim of Transport Processes in Plasmas'' is to provide a comprehensive and unified presentation of the transport theory in plasmas. This subject is of great importance in general statistical and plasma physics; moreover, it constitutes a keystone in the thermonuclear fusion programme as well as in astro- and geophysics. The subject is presented here by unified concepts, methods and notations. The contents are strongly embedded in a general framework of theoretical physics, appealing to modern Hamiltonian mechanics, kinetic theory, non-equilibrium thermodynamics, etc. The necessary concepts from these disciplines are briefly but completely explained, making the two volumes a self-contained text. Plasma transport theory can be characterised as a truly interdisciplinary activity, and several chapters are included containing the important concepts of these peripheral fields, briefly and completely. Many new features are introduced in those two volumes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transport Processes in Multicomponent Plasma is a revised and updated version of the original Russian edition. The book examines transport phenomena in multicomponent plasma and looks at important issues such as partially ionized gases, molecular gas mixtures and methods of calculating kinetic coefficients. It makes a logical progression from simpler to more general problems, and the results presented in the book may be used to calculate the kinetic coefficients of plasma in electric and magnetic fields. The author concludes by describing several practical applications such as electrical conductivity and Hall's effect in MHD-generators. Transport Processes in Multicomponent Plasma will be of interest to advanced students and specialized researchers working in various aspects of plasma physics, including both cold plasmas for industrial research and high temperature plasmas in fusion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anomalous transport is a ubiquitous phenomenon in astrophysical, geophysical and laboratory plasmas; and is a key topic in controlled nuclear fusion research. Despite its fundamental importance and ongoing research interest, a full understanding of anomalous transport in plasmas is still incomplete, due to the complexity of the nonlinear phenomena involved. Aspects in Anomalous Transport in Plasmas is the first book to systematically consider anomalous plasma transport theory and provides a unification of the many theoretical models by emphasizing interrelations between seemingly different methodologies. It is not intended as a catalogue of the vast number of plasma instabilities leading to anomalous transport; instead it chooses a number of these and emphasizes the aspects specifically due to turbulence. After a brief introduction, the microscopic theory of turbulence is discussed, including quasilinear theory and various aspects of renormalization methods, which leads to an understanding of resonance broadening, mode coupling, trajectory correlation and clumps. The second half of the book is devoted to stochiastic tramsport, using methods based on the Langevin equations and on Random Walk theory. This treatment aims at going beyond the traditional limits of weak turbulence, by introducing the recently developed method of decorrelation trajectories, and its application to electrostatic turbulence, magnetic turbulence and zonal flow generation. The final chapter includes very recent work on the nonlocal transport phenomenon.

Book excerpt: A reduced set of two-fluid transport equations is obtained from the conservation equations describing the time evolution of the differential particle number, entropy, and magnetic fluxes in an axisymmetric toroidal plasma with nested magnetic surfaces. Expanding in the small ratio of perpendicular to parallel mobilities and thermal conductivities yields as solubility constraints one-dimensional equations for the surface-averaged thermodynamic variables and magnetic fluxes. Since Ohm's law E + U x B = R' accounts for any nonideal effects, only determines the particle flow relative to the diffusing magnetic surfaces, it is necessary to solve a single two-dimensional generalized differential equation, (delta/delta t) nabla psi x (nabla p - J x B) = O, to find the absolute velocity of a magnetic surface enclosing a fixed toroidal flux. A time-dependent coordinate transformation is used to describe the diffusion of plasma quantities through magnetic surfaces of changing shape.

Book excerpt: The first part of this monograph presents theoretical analysis of the thermophysical properties of strongly coupled coulomb systems. A new model is then developed, making it possible to calculate the full set of low temperature, multicomponent, nonideal plasma transport coefficients, based on the kinetic coefficients of strongly coupled coulomb systems and experimental data for the transport coefficients of Dense, Low temperature plasmas. This model can easily be implemented in the form of a set of computer algorithms, and the third part of the book shows how it can be used to solve important problems of high temperature gas dynamics, for example, heat and mass transfer in the shock layer of a space probe, stability of temperature and concentration fields in gas phase nuclear reactors, and critical phenomena in low temperature plasma dynamics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multi-author reference work provides a unique introduction to the currently emerging, highly interdisciplinary field of those transport processes that cannot be described by using standard methods of statistical mechanics. It comprehensively summarizes topics ranging from mathematical foundations of anomalous dynamics to the most recent experiments in this field. In so doing, this monograph extracts and emphasizes common principles and methods from many different disciplines while providing up-to-date coverage of this new field of research, considering such diverse applications as plasma physics, glassy material, cell science, and socio-economic aspects. The book will be of interest to both theorists and experimentalists in nonlinear dynamics, statistical physics and stochastic processes. It also forms an ideal starting point for graduate students moving into this area. 18 chapters written by internationally recognized experts in this field provide in-depth introductions to fundamental aspects of anomalous transport.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plasma Transport, Heating and MHD Theory provides information pertinent to the theory of plasma transport, heating, and MHD. This book describes the resistive steady states of elliptical cross-section plasmas. Organized into five parts encompassing 28 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the effects due to instabilities excited in the low-density regime of tokamaks by runaway electrons via the cyclotron resonance. This text then examines the formulation of transport theory, which is applied to transport in tokamak due to trapped-particle instabilities in the quasi-linear stage. Other chapters consider the stability of the boundary regions of gas insulated plasmas. This book discusses as well the zero-dimensional or point model of the Elmo Bumpy Torus (EBT) experiment in which spatial dependences are eliminated by replacing all plasma gradients by characteristic scale lengths equal to the plasma minor radius. The final chapter deals with anomalous transport theory. This book is a valuable resource for plasma physicists.
