Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transport infrastructure has represented one of the cornerstones of development and cohesion strategies in the European Union (EU) and elsewhere in the world. However, despite the considerable funds devoted to it, its impact remains controversial. This paper revisits the question of to what extent transport infrastructure endowment -- proxied by regional motorways -- has contributed to regional growth in the EU between 1990 and 2004. It analyses infrastructure in relationship to other factors which may condition economic growth, such as innovation, migration, and the local 'social filter', taking also into account the geographical component of intervention in transport infrastructure and innovation. The results of the two-way fixed-effect (static) and GMM-diff (dynamic) panel data regressions indicate that infrastructure endowment is a relatively poor predictor of economic growth and that regional growth in the EU results from a combination of an adequate 'social filter', good innovation capacity, both in the region and in neighbouring areas, and a region's capacity to attract migrants. The meagre returns of infrastructure endowment on economic growth raises interesting questions about the opportunity costs of further infrastructure investments across most of Western Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to provide the first major appraisal of transport resources and developments in Eastern and Central Europe following the collapse of the Warsaw Pact. As market economies emerge and the eastern-ward focus of transport systems becomes increasingly reversed, a timely review is necessary to assess how its often heavily subsidized, antiquated and bureaucratic system can cope with new and urgent demands. Following a broad introduction to the main issues, the book develops the main themes confronting the region's transport - modernization, privatization, new markets, destinations and routes and wider European integration. Region-wide overviews are interspersed with authoritative and detailed national or sectoral surveys dealing with complex topics like the impact of German unification of tourism. The books concludes with a research agenda for the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume addresses various themes in regional development studies from the perspective of structural economic change. Particular attention is paid to factors having long-run implications for regional development, such as innovation and knowledge production. Innovation and research and development activities appear to take place at particular locations. This has implications for long-run spatial and sectoral developments. Another factor is transport infrastructure; its impact on efficiency and equity is surveyed. Other themes covered relate to the role of tourism and adjustments in urban economies. The books aims to offer a balance between modelling and non-modelling approaches. In addition to country-specific contributions, some are offered at the European level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. The European Union is constantly struggling to find effective ways to plan major transport infrastructure developments at a European level. This is a critical factor in the emerging debates surrounding the absorption of the accession states into the EU, but it is essential for these states that their economic competitiveness is supported by appropriate and effective transport infrastructure. It is therefore crucial to find innovative approaches to the infrastructure itself, how it is financed and the ways in which proper evaluation procedures are implemented to select which policies, programmes and projects should be supported. This informative volume brings together leading international specialists in economic evaluation applied within the transport sector. Their contributions encompass all the main levels at which transport planning is typically conceptualized - strategic/regional policy, programme and project planning. It therefore examines how coherent economic evaluation practice can be developed and applied not only across different physical scales, but also across national borders.

Book excerpt: This book investigates the EU’s regional growth dynamics and, in particular, the reasons why peripheral and socio-economically disadvantaged areas have persistently failed to catch up with the rest of the Union. It shows that the capability of the knowledge-based growth model to deliver its expected benefits to these areas crucially depends on tackling a specific set of socio-institutional factors which prevents innovation from being effectively translated into economic growth. The book takes an eclectic approach to the territorial genesis of innovation and regional growth by combining different theoretical strands into one model of empirical analysis covering the whole EU-25. An in-depth comparative analysis with the United States is also included, providing significant insights into the distinctive features of the European process of innovation and its territorial determinants. The evidence produced in the book is extensively applied to the analysis of EU development policies.

Book excerpt: The challenge of growth in transport, especially in freight transport, and scarce resources in money, landscape and local opposition against new infrastructure investment require new solutions from transport policy. This book deals with these issues taking as an example the transport corridor Rotterdam-Genoa, one of the most heavily used in Europe. In 2010 the INTERREG project Code24 with partners from five European countries started with the aim to develop a transnational strategy to strengthen and to develop the corridor. The main objective was to accelerate and jointly develop the transport capacity of the entire corridor by ensuring optimal economic benefits and spatial integration while reducing negative impacts on the environment at local and regional level. These issues are highlighted in the book from an interdisciplinary perspective, taking into account spatial, economic, environmental and political aspects.
