Book excerpt: Transonic wind tunnel tests were conducted on a body of revolution with various fin configurations to investigate jet plume effects on missile longitudinal stability. A series of cold air normal jets located downstream of the base were utilized to simulate the jet plume. Fins of various planform geometry were tested at a forward longitudinal location only. The angle of attack range was -4 to 11 degrees at Mach numbers of from 0.2 to 2.3. The test was run at the Arnold Engineering Development Center Transonic (16T) and Supersonic (16S) wind tunnels and was designated AEDC SF172/TF360. (Author).

Book excerpt: Transonic wind tunnel tests were conducted on a sting-mounted model to determine thrust effects on longitudinal stability characteristics of several body-fin combinations. The plume was simulated by cold air ejected from a series of sonic jets normal to the missile axis. One fin configuration was tested at several longitudinal positions. Adverse plume effects on stability were reduced by location of fins a distance forward of the base. The test was conducted at the Calspan Corporations' 8 foot Transonic Wind Tunnel at Mach numbers ranging from 0.4 to 1.25. Angles of attack ranged from -4 degrees to 12 degrees. Data were also obtained at roll angles of 22.5 degrees and 45 degrees for one configuration.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes the studies made to date by the Army Missile Command on the effects of the rocket jet plume on the Stability characteristics of a body of revolution with various fin configurations and at various fin positions on the body. The Mach numbers ranged from 0.2 to 2.3. A normal jet plume simulator was used to obtain the desired plume effects. This report concerns itself with those tests conducted on a 5-in. diameter, 52-in. long model, with a 3 caliber tangent ogive nose.

Book excerpt: Experimental aerodynamic investigations were conducted at the AEDC 16-foot Transonic Wind Tunnel to determine longitudinal stability characteristics of a long slender rocket configuration with simulated jet plume. The effect of jet plume on rocket aerodynamics is given over an angle of attack range from -11 to 11 degrees at Mach numbers from 0.2 to 1.5. Plume simulator chamber pressure varied from 0 to 600 psia. Individual cruciform fin aerodynamic loads are also shown over the same ranges. (Author).

Book excerpt: The X-31 Enhanced Fighter Maneuverability Demonstrator was unique among experimental aircraft. A joint effort of the United States and Germany, the X-31 was the only X-plane to be designed, manufactured, and flight tested as an international collaboration. It was also the only X-plane to support two separate test programs conducted years apart, one administered largely by NASA and the other by the U.S. Navy, as well as the first X-plane ever to perform at the Paris Air Show. Flying Beyond the Stall begins by describing the government agencies and private-sector industries involved in the X-31 program, the genesis of the supermaneuverability concept and its initial design breakthroughs, design and fabrication of two test airframes, preparation for the X-31's first flight, and the first flights of Ship #1 and Ship #2. Subsequent chapters discuss envelope expansion, handling qualities (especially at high angles of attack), and flight with vectored thrust. The book then turns to the program's move to NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center and actual flight test data. Additional tasking, such as helmet-mounted display evaluations, handling quality studies, aerodynamic parameter estimation, and a "tailless" study are also discussed. The book describes how, in the aftermath of a disastrous accident with Ship #1 in 1995, Ship #2 was prepared for its outstanding participation in the Paris Air Show. The aircraft was then shipped back to Edwards AFB and put into storage until the late 1990s, when it was refurbished for participation in the U. S. Navy's VECTOR program. The book ends with a comprehensive discussion of lessons learned and includes an Appendix containing detailed information.

The Smell of Kerosene tells the dramatic story of a NASA research pilot who logged over 11,000 flight hours in more than 125 types of aircraft. Donald Mallick gives the reader fascinating first-hand description of his early naval flight training, carrier operations, and his research flying career with NASA. After transferring to the NASA Flight Research Center, Mallick became involved with projects that further pushed the boundaries of aerospace technology. These included the giant delta-winged XB-70 supersonic airplane, the wingless M2-F1 lifting body vehicle, and triple-sonic YF-12 Blackbird. Mallick also test flew the Lunar Landing Research Vehicle and helped develop techniques used in training astronauts to land on the Moon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Much has been written about the famous conflicts and battlegrounds of the East during the American Revolution. Perhaps less familiar, but equally important and exciting, was the war on the western frontier, where Ohio Valley settlers fought for the land they had claimed -- and for their very lives. George Rogers Clark stepped forward to organize the local militias into a united front that would defend the western frontier from Indian attacks. Clark was one of the few people who saw the importance of the West in the war effort as a whole, and he persuaded Virginia's government to lend support to his efforts. As a result Clark was able to cross the Ohio, saving that part of the frontier from further raids. Lowell Harrison captures the excitement of this vital part of American history while giving a complete view of George Rogers Clark's significant achievements. Lowell H. Harrison, is a professor emeritus of history at Western Kentucky University and is the author or co-author of numerous books, including Lincoln of Kentucky, A New History of Kentucky, and Kentucky's Governors."
