Book excerpt: Unsteady interactions of strong concentrated vortices, distributed gusts, and sharp-edged gusts with stationary airfoils have been analyzed in two-dimensional transonic flow. A simple and efficient method for introducing such vortical disturbances has been implemented in numerical codes that range from inviscid transonic small disturbance to thin-layer Navier Stokes. The numerical results demonstrate the large distortions in the overall flow field and in the surface air loads that are produced by various vortical interactions. The results of the different codes are in excellent qualitative agreement, but, as might expected, the transonic small-disturbance calculations are deficient in the important region near the leading edge. Keywords include: Gusts, Vortex interaction, Unsteady transonic flow, and Computational aerodynamics.

Book excerpt: Unsteady interactions of concentrated vortices and distributed free-stream gusts with a stationary airfoil have been analyzed in two-dimensional transonic flow. A simple method of introducing such disturbances has been implemented numerically in the well-known transonic small-disturbance code LTRAN2, and calculations have been performed for two important classes of current aerodynamic problems. The first, which demonstrates many of the essential features of the interactions between helicopter rotor blades and their trailing-vortex wakes, is that of a discrete potential vortex convecting past an airfoil. The second is the response of a transonic airfoil to a transverse periodic gust, with and without the alleviation that can be achieved by the proper active control motion of a trailing-edge flap. In both cases, unsteady effects are found to play important roles in the shock-wave motion, in the overall flow-field development, and consequently, in the air loads on the airfoil. (Author).

Book excerpt: Blade-vortex interaction noise from full-scale helicopters is shown to involve unsteady transonic flow phenomena which can be modeled as two-dimensional. An unsteady, small-disturbance-theory, numerical analysis, is used to model the interaction of an airfoil with a finite-core, locally-convected vortex using the vortex-in-cell method with multiple branch cuts accounting for the distributed vortices' potential jumps. Strong disturbances propagating from the blade-vortex interaction are associated with occurrence of Tijdeman's Type C flow on the airfoil's lower surface. In this type of flow, the shock which initially terminates a supersonic zone propagates through it and forward off the airfoil. The effects of airfoil shape, angle of attack, Mach number, vortex strength, and vortex miss distance on the flow and on waves radiated forward are investigated. It is found that stronger radiated waves are associated with narrow supersonic regions and near-sonic base flow. Also, stronger vortices generate stronger radiated waves, but miss distance is not as important a factor. Originator-supplied keywords include: Acoustics, Noise(Sound), and Numerical analysis.

Book excerpt: The aim of the symposium was to gather fellow researchers, colleagues and friends of Professor William R Sears, a member of the National Academy of Science and the Academy of Engineering, on the occasion of his 80th birthday. Professor Sears is a leader in Aerospace Science and Aerodynamics research and the symposium was held in honour of his work in these areas. The symposium focussed on four areas in aeronautical science in which Professor Sears has made major contributions. These are wing design, unsteady aerodynamics and separation, aeroacoustics and self-correcting wind tunnels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unsteady interactions of a moving vortex with a stationary airfoil have been calculated using three different numerical methods based on the thin layer Navier-Stokes, Euler and transonic small-disturbance (TSD) equations. All three methods use a perturbation-form of an implicit numerical algorithm. Results are presented for both subsonic and transonic flow conditions and for weak and strong interactions. Results from these methods and from the other available numerical methods show qualitatively similar behavior for weak interactions. However, the stronger interactions considered proved to be beyond the capabilities of the transonic small-disturbance codes. In general, the results show a tremendous influence of the vortex on the flow field around the airfoil. The most dramatic results of the interaction seem to occur when the convecting vortex is within one chord of the airfoil. Even the weak interactions produced vortex/shock induced boundary-layer separation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid flow and heat transfer processes play an important role in many areas of science and engineering, from the planetary scale (e.g., influencing weather and climate) to the microscopic scales of enhancing heat transfer by the use of nanofluids; understood in the broadest possible sense, they also underpin the performance of many energy systems. This topical Special Issue of Energies is dedicated to the recent advances in this very broad field. This book will be of interest to readers not only in the fields of mechanical, aerospace, chemical, process and petroleum, energy, earth, civil ,and flow instrumentation engineering but, equally, biological and medical sciences, as well as physics and mathematics; that is, anywhere that “fluid flow and heat transfer” phenomena may play an important role or be a subject of worthy research pursuits.
