Book excerpt: An investigation of the effects of several wing leading-edge modifications on the aerodynamic characteristics of a 45 degree swept-wing fighter-airplane model has been conducted in the Langley 16-foot transonic tunnel at low and high lifting conditions at Mach numbers from 0.85 to 1.03. The investigation included the determination of the effect on longitudinal stability and performance characteristics of wing leading-edge and chord-extension droops of 6 and 20 degrees, chord-extension overhangs of 0.075c and 0.15c (where c is the wing chord), leading-edge notches cut out at the inboard end of the 0.075c chord-extension to depths of 0.075c and 0.125c, and indentation of the model fuselage to conform partially to the supersonic area rule for a Mach number of 1.20. Lift, drag, and pitching-moment data were obtained for configurations with the tail on and off. Comparisons of data obtained from the present model with data from a configuration with leading-edge slats are included.

Book excerpt: A transonic flutter investigation was made of elastically and dynamically scaled models of the tee-tail of a patrol bomber. It was found that removal of the 15 degrees dihedral of the stabilizer used on the airplane raised the flutter boundary to higher dynamic pressures. The effect of Mach number on the flutter boundary was different for dihedral angles of 0 degrees and 15 degrees. The dynamic pressure at the flutter boundary increased approximately linearly with the torsional stiffness of the fin. Highspeed motion pictures indicated that the flutter mode consisted primarily of fin bending and fin torsion. (Author).

Book excerpt: A flutter investigation has been made in the Langley transonic blowdown tunnel at Mach numbers between 0.79 and 1.34 on a thin 10 degree sweptback wing having an aspect ratio of 4 and a taper ratio of 0.6. The data obtained have been compared with data from NACA Research Memorandum L55I13A for zero and 30 degree sweptback wings of the type investigated, the flutter boundary for the 10 degree sweptback wing falls between those for the zero degree and 30 degree sweptback wings in the low supersonic Mach number range. However, the subsonic level (around a Mach number of 0.8) of the flutter boundary for the 10 degree sweptback wing lies above those for the zero and 30 degree sweptback wings. In addition, the amount of rise in the flutter boundary from the subsonic level to the supersonic values is about the same for the wings with angles of sweepback of 10 degrees and zero degrees, but is much greater for the wing with an angle of sweepback of 30 degrees.

Book excerpt: A low-speed investigation was conducted to determine the dynamic stability derivatives in pitch, roll, and yaw over an angle-of-attack range of -10 [degree] to 110 [degree] for a twin-jet swept-wing fighter model. Several frequencies and amplitudes were investigated to determine the effects of these variables on the stability derivatives. The effect of the vertical and horizontal tail, and horizontal-tail incidence on the derivatives was also evaluated. The results indicate that the model exhibited stable values of damping in pitch over the entire angle-of-attack range, but marked reductions of damping in roll were measured at the stall, and unstable values of damping in yaw were present for the very high angles of attack associated with flat spins. Either removal of the horizontal or vertical tail or full up deflection of the horizontal tail eliminated the unstable characteristics of the damping-in-yaw derivatives.
