Book Synopsis Cooperation between states in ocean management by : Paulina Hopstock
Download or read book Cooperation between states in ocean management written by Paulina Hopstock and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2022-01-10 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2021 in the subject Law - European and International Law, Intellectual Properties, grade: A, University of Bergen, course: Law of the Sea and its Uses, language: English, abstract: It is easy to draw a border on a map. It is easy for a state to keep to its own side of the border – so long as activities on land are concerned. But when activities at sea enter the equation, it is not as simple anymore. Overall, there are only 44 landlocked countries that have no immediate access to open water, so the question of how to manage the oceans is of high importance to nearly every state in the world. Often, man-made and natural borders do not match. Especially at sea, biophysical borders are more porous than they are on land, so the effects of human activities are not limited to the particular area in which they take place . Spill-over effects from marine activities are common, specifically among neighboring countries. This may result in conflicts between different stakeholders that need to be solved at an international level. Because of this, when managing sea spaces, transnational coordination plays a key role.
Book Synopsis Sustainable Ocean Resource Governance by : Markus Kotzur

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Sustainable Ocean Resource Governance an international group of eminent authors offer perspectives on the legal interface between sustainable economic growth, effective marine resource management and urgent environmental protection of the sea by addressing three key issues: deep sea mining, marine energy generation, and seabed pipeline and cable systems. In light of the sectoral nature of current ocean governance and the existing patchwork of management arrangements for the oceans, this book gives insights in search for a coherent and consistent sustainability approach.
Book Synopsis Mankind and the Oceans by : Nobuyuki Miyazaki
Download or read book Mankind and the Oceans written by Nobuyuki Miyazaki and published by United Nations University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oceans cover more than 70 percent of the Earth's surface, and we are equally responsible for wise use and protection of their resources. The relationship between mankind and the oceans has been crucial since prehistoric times, but with population growth, especially in coastal zones, there is a growing threat to the marine environment from land-based activities including industrial waste and municipal sewage, as well as pollution from ships and the excessive exploitation of fish stocks. This publication examines the role and future of our oceans, drawing on evidence from regional and national case studies, and considers approaches that can help mitigate our impact on them and protect marine biodiversity.

Download or read book Oceans Management in the 21st Century written by Alex G. Oude Elferink and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2004-07-01 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chapters throughout this book assess the roles and impact upon oceans management of the institutions both inside and outside the Convention’s framework, as well as the United Nations General Assembly as concerns its coordinating role in the field of oceans and law of the sea. Questions addressed concern the interpretation of the Convention’s substantive provisions and how these various institutions interact. The impetus to resolve these and other challenges in the law of the sea and oceans management will ensure the law of the sea’s continuing evolution in the years ahead.
Book Synopsis Maritiem afbakeningsrecht by : Alex G. Oude Elferink

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents an analysis of the maritime boundary delimitations of the Russian Federation. The focus of this analysis is the relationship between state practice and the rules of public international law applicable to the delimitation of maritime zones between neighboring states. A first part establishes the contents of the law in this field. The main part of the work concerns an analysis of the position of the Russian Federation on the rules of maritime delimitation law and the practice of this state in relation to the delimitation of specific maritime boundaries with neighboring states. The case study of the Russian Federation illustrates the significance of international law for the delimitation of maritime boundaries, while at the same time indicating the limits of the influence of the law on state behavior.
Book Synopsis Routledge Handbook of Ocean Resources and Management by : Hance D. Smith
Download or read book Routledge Handbook of Ocean Resources and Management written by Hance D. Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-16 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive handbook provides a global overview of ocean resources and management by focusing on critical issues relating to human development and the marine environment, their interrelationships as expressed through the uses of the sea as a resource, and the regional expression of these themes. The underlying approach is geographical, with prominence given to the biosphere, political arrangements and regional patterns – all considered to be especially crucial to the human understanding required for the use and management of the world's oceans. Part one addresses key themes in our knowledge of relationships between people and the sea on a global scale, including economic and political issues, and understanding and managing marine environments. Part two provides a systematic review of the uses of the sea, grouped into food, ocean space, materials and energy, and the sea as an environmental resource. Part three on the geography of the sea considers management strategies especially related to the state system, and regional management developments in both core economic regions and the developing periphery. Book Synopsis Increasing Capacity for Stewardship of Oceans and Coasts by : National Research Council
Download or read book Increasing Capacity for Stewardship of Oceans and Coasts written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-03-04 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine environments support the livelihoods, economies, and quality of life for communities around the world. But growth of coastal populations and increasing demands on marine resources are putting the future of ocean and coastal resources at risk through impacts such as overfishing, wetland drainage, climate change, and pollution of coastal waters. Given these demands, it is vital to build capacity-the people, the institutions, and technology and tools-needed to manage ocean resources. Unfortunately, many capacity building efforts focus on specific projects rather than on capacity building as goal unto itself, resulting in activities that are not funded or sustained past the typically short project lifetime. This book finds that the most successful capacity-building efforts meet the needs of a specific locale or region based on periodic assessments and include plans to maintain and expand capacity after the project ends. The report recommends ways that governments and organizations can help strengthen marine protection and management capacity, including conducting periodic program assessments, making plans to sustain funding, and developing leadership and political will. The book was produced at the request of Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the President's Circle of the National Academies, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the National Science Foundation, the Marisla Foundation, and the Curtis and Edith Munson Foundation.

Book Synopsis Saving the Oceans Through Law by : James Harrison
Download or read book Saving the Oceans Through Law written by James Harrison and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oceans cover more than seventy per cent of the surface of the planet and they provide many vital ecosystem services. However, the health of the world's oceans has been deteriorating over the past decades and the protection of the marine environment has emerged as one of the most pressing legal and political challenges for the international community. An effective solution depends upon the cooperation of all states towards achieving agreed objectives. This book provides a critical assessment of the role that international law plays in this process, by explaining and evaluating the various legal instruments that have been negotiated in this area, as well as key trends in global ocean governance. Starting with a detailed analysis of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the book considers the main treaties and other legal texts that seeks to prevent, reduce, and control damage to the marine environment caused by navigation, seabed exploitation, fishing, dumping, and land-based activities, as well as emerging pressures such as ocean noise and climate change. The book demonstrates how international institutions have expanded their mandates to address a broader range of marine environmental issues, beyond basic problems of pollution control to include the conservation of marine biological diversity and an ecosystems approach to regulation. It also discusses the development of diverse regulatory tools to address anthropogenic impacts on the marine environment and the extent to which states have adopted a precautionary approach in different maritime sectors. Whilst many advances have been made in these matters, this book highlights the need for greater coordination between international institutions, as well as the desirability of developing stronger enforcement mechanisms for international environmental rules.
