Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transmission Line Formulas for Electrical Engineers and Engineering Students The object of this book is to compile a set of instructions for engineers, which will enable them to make electrical calculations for transmission lines with the least possible amount of work. The chart and working formulas have for the most part been developed independently by the author. Where the same or similar methods have been previously published, the fact is generally stated in the footnotes, but it has not been found possible to make these references absolutely complete. The second part of the book is for reference and contains the derivation of the principal formulas used in connection with transmission lines. As many recent articles on transmission lines make use of formulas which are only roughly approximate, or are even incorrect, a reliable collection of formulas, with the method of obtaining them, should be found valuable. It should not be presumed, because the second part of the book requires the use of the integral calculus, that the working formulas will require a knowledge of higher mathematics. The first five or six chapters are complete in themselves, and are planned for the use of those who have an ordinary acquaintance with alternating-current calculations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Power Transmission: Principles and Calculations, Including a Revision of Overhead Electric Power Transmission A portion of the material which was originally contained in the Appendix has been incorporated in the text; but much of the first edition has been entirely omitted, either because its inclusion is no longer necessary owing to the rapid strides that have been made of late years in the general knowledge of electrical power transmission, or because it has been replaced by new material believed to be of more value to the student or practical engineer. The chapter describing the Thury system of transmission by continuous currents has been retained with only slight changes and additions. It has not been deemed expedient to omit this entirely because, although few American engineers have taken the trouble to familiarize themselves with this system of trans mission, there are conditions under which it has certain in disputable advantages which European engineers have not been slow to recognize. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transmission Line Construction: Methods and Costs There is, at present, no book treating adequately of the practical methods employed in modern high-tension line construe tion. The writer's aim in this book has been to supply material of value to the man actively engaged in this kind of work, and to set forth the respective merits of the various types of line construction, together with the methods commonly employed in their building. No attempt has been made to cover the electrical and mechanical calculations involved. The book treats the subject from the standpoint of the construction man rather than that of the office engineer. Considerable attention has been given to cost data. In handling this. Material, the aim has been to note as far as possible all conditions which might affect costs, and to make these data as definite, useful and reliable as possible. The writer wishes to acknowledge the assistance of Mr. E. J. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Calculation of Transmission Lines: For Distribution of Direct and Alternating Currents by Means of Overhead, Underground, and Interior Wires for Purposes of Light, Power, and Traction This little book is offered to the engineering profession with the hope that it may be of practical help in the rapid and accurate calculation of transmission lines. Its existence is the outcome of the belief that this field is in part barren. Its chief mission is to substitute a direct solution for the trial method which was formerly a necessary evil. The arrangement of the formulas, tables and text has been dictated solely by the needs of the rapid worker. All sections except the last include the important effects of temperature and specific conductivity, The section relating to direct-current railways is novel in the form of its tables, and the methods outlined in it have been found rapid and comprehensive, The alternating-current division presents a new and original method for the solution of these problems. It is the only method known to the author which determines the size of wire directly from the volt loss in the line, and it also possesses unique features of scope, accu racy and simplicity. The chapter on single-phase railways is in accord with most of the consistent data published on the subject, although further accurate investigations of installed lines may modify to some extent the present accepted values. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrical Characteristics of Transmission Circuits Many articles each pertaining to some particular method of solution of transmission circuits have been published from time to time. This book constitutes a review of each of numerous methods perviously proposed by different authors with examples illustrating each method of solution and the accuracy which may be expected by its use. Thus by permission of various authors the reader of this book is provided with a choice of nu merous methods ranging between the most simplified graphical forms of solutions and complete mathematical solutions. He is also provided with numerous and extensive tables of circuit and other constants making it unnecessary for him to lose time and risk making mistakes in calculating constants for each case in question. Much effort has been expended with a view of simplifying explanations by the aid of supplementary diagrams and tabulations. The engineer upon whose lot it only occasionally falls to determine the size of conductors and performances of circuits appreciates how easy it is to make errors in calculations which may prove very serious and should find the quick estimating tables very useful particularly for short line solutions. For those preferring to avoid the more mathematical solutions the all graphical methods for solving long line problems including the Wilkinson Kennelly charts for obtaining graphically the auxiliary constants should prove helpful. When borrowed material has been used in this book full credit has been given the author at the place the material is used. It is desired. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Engineers' Manual This work originated from the conception that the practicing engineer or engineering student would welcome a consolidation of the formulas and constants for which he is accustomed to Search through several volumes and that the application Of each formula might be explained more concisely than in texts devoted exclusively to the process Of derivation. With this end in view those engineering formulas, mathematical operations and tables Of constants which appear to be most useful are presented in systematic order and in a Size of book designed to fit the pocket. Each formula is preceded by a statement in which its appli cation, the symbology Of the involved physical quantities and definite units of measurement are indicated. It is believed that this method Of presentation increases the speed of selection and understanding of a desired formula and insures greater accuracy Of substitution Since data units of any kind may be converted into specified units by reference to the table of conversion fac tors. The sequence Of the formulas is based generally upon their order Of derivation so that the understanding of a formula may be enlarged by inspection of the formulas which precede it. All catchwords, symbols and formulas are printed in full face type and each formula or group of formulas is numbered to facili tate reference to the text or cross reference between formulas. This book was released on 2009-10-29 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High frequencies of densely packed modern electronic equipment turn even the smallest piece of wire into a transmission line with signal retardation, dispersion, attenuation, and distortion. In electromagnetic environments with high-power microwave or ultra-wideband sources, transmission lines pick up noise currents generated by external electromagnetic fields. These are superimposed on essential signals, the lines acting not only as receiving antennas but radiating parts of the signal energy into the environment. This book is outstanding in its originality. While many textbooks rephrase that which has been written before, this book features: * an accessible introduction to the fundamentals of electromagnetics; * an explanation of the newest developments in transmission line theory, featuring the transmission line super theory developed by the authors; * a unique exposition of the increasingly popular PEEC (partial element equivalent circuit) method, including recent research results. Both the Transmission Line Theory and the PEEC method are well suited to combine linear structures with circuit networks. For engineers, researchers, and graduate students, this text broadens insight into the basics of electrical engineering. It provides a deeper understanding of Maxwellian-circuit-like representations of multi-conductor transmission lines, justifies future research in this field.
