Book excerpt: Dislocation configurations in slices of material taken ahead of the fatigue crack tip in copper single crystals were observed through transmission electron microscopy. These observations revealed: (a) a distinct transition in configuration as a region within approximately 250 microns of the crack tip was approached and (b) a reduction in dislocation cell size with decreasing distance from the crack tip similar in form to cell-size-vs-fatigue-stress-increase curves. These observations lend support to the concept of a distinct 'plastic zone' in the vicinity of the fatigue crack tip, with associated blunting-type crack propagation mechanisms. (Author).

Book excerpt: Compressively shock-loaded copper single crystals were examined employing complementary methods of X-ray diffraction, X-ray topography (XRT), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The defect structures induced depended on the crystal orientation relative to the direction of shock propagation and also upon the existence or absence of a reflected tensile wave. TEM disclosed that the defect structure induced by compressive shock loading consisted of clusters of microtwins alternating with a tangled dislocation substructure. Failure zones did not occur. The induced defect structure exhibited a low net macroscopic misorientation which amounted to less than two degrees of arc and the misorientation of the twinned regions with respect to the adjacent dislocation substructure was less than 1/2 degree of arc. By contrast specimens subjected to a reflected tensile pulse exhibited a failure zone and the defect structure in its vicinity showed a substantial macroscopic misorientation. In addition, a high incidence of porosity was observed by SEM. The pores had octahedral shape with facets corresponding to close-packed planes. Structural details observed within the pores were identified as twinned regions. (Author).

Book excerpt: A diffusion bonded copper-alumina interface had been studied using energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Investigations of polycrystalline alumina showed that silica, a common commercial impurity, was present at the triple junctions in the form of fine mullite crystals in a glassy, silicon rich phase. Silicon was also detected along the alumina grain boundaries near triple junctions. There was no observed diffusion of Cu into alumina or alumina into copper. TEM results indicated no interface phase in the these vacuum formed samples. EDX studies of the interfaces revealed that silicon was present in varying concentrations from 1.O at.% to 10.0 at.%. Using spatial difference, PEELS at the interface showed two distinct residuals: a coordination similar to an aluminosilicate for silicon rich areas and a coordination similar to a metal to metal coordination for low silicon regions. Comparison of the Si rich interface residual PEELS spectra to that of the alumina triple junction PEELS spectra showed that the interface had atomic environments similar to that of as aluminosilicate, such as mullite. The interface results suggest that Si segregation may contribute to the observed higher strength of the metal-ceramic composite by void filling and modified bond character.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifth International Congress for Electron Microscopy, Volume 2: Biology focuses on the processes, methodologies, approaches, and principles involved in electron microscopy. The selection takes a look at some aspects of freeze-substitution in electron microscopy; fixatives for cytological and cytochemical studies; intramembranous localization of succinic dehydrogenase using tetranitro-blue tetrazolium; and evaluation of different methods of auto-radiography in electron microscopy. The book then examines the fixation of nuclear structures by unbuffered solutions of osmium tetroxide in slightly acid distilled water; some electron microscope observations on the contraction mechanism in vertebrate smooth muscle; arrangement of myofilaments in the oblique-striated muscles; and electron microscopic observations of cat splenic nerve fibers after fixation by freeze-drying. The text ponders on differentiation of oligodendroglia from migratory spongioblasts; morphological changes in the Purkinje-cells after orthostatic collapse; electron microscopic observations of the development of the neuroblast in the rabbit embryo; electron microscopic observations on the development of blood vessels in the nervous system of the rabbit embryo; and simple methods for nucleic acid and acid mucopolysaccharide localization in electron micrographs. The selection is a valuable source of data for researchers interested in electron microscopy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamental Aspects of Dislocation Interactions: Low-Energy Dislocation Structures III covers the papers presented at a European Research Conference on Plasticity of Materials-Fundamental Aspects of Dislocation Interactions: Low-Energy Dislocation Structures III, held on August 30-September 4, 1992 in Ascona, Switzerland. The book focuses on the processes, technologies, reactions, transformations, and approaches involved in dislocation interactions. The selection first offers information on work softening and Hall-Petch hardening in extruded mechanically alloyed alloys and dynamic origin of dislocation structures in deformed solids. Discussions focus on stress-strain behavior in relation to composition, structure, and annealing; comparison of stress-strain curves with work softening theory; sweeping and trapping mechanism; and model of dipolar wall structure formation. The text then ponders on plastic instabilities and their relation to fracture and dislocation and kink dynamics in f.c.c. metals studied by mechanical spectroscopy. The book takes a look at misfit dislocation generation mechanisms in heterostructures and evolution of dislocation structure on the interfaces associated with diffusionless phase transitions. Discussions focus on dislocation representation of a wall of elastic domains; equation of equilibrium of an elastic domain; transformation of dislocations; and theoretical and experimental background. The selection is a valuable reference for readers interested in dislocation interactions.
