Book excerpt: The telecommunications network is a global system of equipment and means that ensures the connections between the users of communication services, with the transmission and reception of the information involved. It is a set of communication nodes, in which processing procedures take place for the transmission and reception of information signals, switching connections and choosing routes between nodes to make connections between sources and destinations of communications, and a set of links between these nodes, made in a variety of technologies. This volume contains 5 chapters in which the different processes and types of systems within the telecommunications network are presented.

Book excerpt: Although multihomed communication is a rapidly emerging trend for next generation networks, no known book explores multihomed communication with the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP). Filling this void, Multihomed Communication with SCTP (Stream Control Transmission Protocol) explains this innovative feature that allows an endpoint to simultaneously maintain and use multiple points of connectivity to the network—making it possible for fixed and mobile users to connect to the Internet via multiple service providers or last hop technologies. Among the topics addressed, the book covers: Support of node mobility between networks Concurrent multipath transfer using SCTP multihoming Low delay communication and multimedia applications High performance computing using commodity hardware and software SCTP support in the INET framework and its analysis in the Wireshark packet analyzer SCTP application interface Ideal for researchers and programmers, this forward-looking reference describes SCTP multihoming concepts and implementation, applications of multihoming across different domains, and proposed extensions such as multipath transfer and mobility. Although the book is aimed at those with an advanced background, it also covers the fundamental concepts and mechanisms of SCTP multihoming to help anyone get up to speed on SCTP.

This book was released on 2022-12-23 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The societal reliance upon wireless systems continues to rise due to mobile data interchange. A closer look at the current allocation of 38 GHz 5G Cellular is desperately pointing to, and suggesting the crowding of the frequency spectrum. Therefore this study explores visible light communication as one of the emerging technologies to help meet up with these challenges. The Visible Light Communication (VLC) refers to the communication technology which utilizes the visible light source as a signal transmitter, the air as a transmission medium, and the appropriate photodiode as a signal receiving component. This study appraises the extant literature on Solid State Lighting (SSL), with emphasis on Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). The study highlights the weaknesses of the existing system, the advantages and the significance of the new system using prototype methodology. The study focused on the design and implementation of Visible Light Communication (VLC) circuit for wireless data transmission by designing an analog circuit to integrate with a computer or mobile phone, and then sending some form of data using visible light LEDs from a transmitter, and decoding it with a receiver. The design adopted Beagle-Bone-Black (BBB) as development platform and the circuit was tested with Proteus 8 Professional and data sent reliably and accurately over a short distance at a fair speed which ensures that the initial goals for the functionality of this new system which includes being able to send audio, text or pictures over a distance of approximately 10 meter at a data rate of at least 10 Mbps was achieved. The study shows that visible light communication has the potential to provide high speed data communication with improved energy efficiency and communication security/privacy due to its unique characteristics and advantages. Also, Visible Light Communication can complement the RF-based mobile communication systems in designing high-capacity mobile data networks and can be incorporated in the next generation 5G network. The study therefore recommends error control mechanism and Dimming Support to be integrated in the subsequent studies.

Book excerpt: Principles of Electrical Transmission Lines in Power and Communication is a preliminary study in the transmission of electricity, which particularly discusses principles common to all electrical transmission links, whether their functions be communication or bulk power transfer. This book explains the propagation on loss-free lines I and II and introduces the finite loss-free lines. The sinusoidal excitation of dissipative lines I and II is then examined, and the occurrence of standing waves and quarter-wave is then discussed. This text also looks into topics on frequencies. This book will be invaluable to students and experts in the field of electronics and related disciplines.

It provides comprehensive explanation of four terminal symmetrical and asymmetrical networks, attenuators, filters, network synthesis, equalizers, transmission line theory and Smith chart. The book starts with explaining the symmetrical and asymmetrical four terminal networks which form the basis of attenuators and filters. Then book provides the detailed discussion of various types of attenuators and filters. The discussion of composite filters, lattice filter and crystal filter is also included in support. The book incorporates the discussion of Hurwitz polynomials and positive real function and continues to explain the network synthesis of LC, RC, RL and RLC networks. The book also explains the various types of equalizers. The book covers the transmission line parameters in detail along with reflection on a line, reflection loss and reflection factor. The chapter on transmission line at radio frequency includes parameters of line at high frequency, standing waves, standing wave ratio, single stub matching, double stub matching and Smith chart. The book uses plain, simple and lucid language to explain each topic. The book provides the logical method of explaining the various complicated topics and stepwise methods to make the understanding easy. The variety of solved examples is the feature of this book. The book explains the philosophy of the subject which makes the understanding of the concepts very clear and makes the subject more interesting.

It will force the reader to think in new and fruitful ways about such dichotomies as transmissions vs. ritual, administrative vs. critical, positivist vs. marxist, and cultural vs. power-orientated approaches to communications study. An historically inspired treatment of major figures and theories, required reading for the sophisticated scholar' - George Gerbner, University of Pennsylvania ...offers a mural of thought with a rich background, highlighted by such thoughts as communication being the 'maintenance of society in time'. - Cast/Communication Booknotes These essays encompass much more than a critique of an academic discipline. Carey's lively thought, lucid style, and profound scholarship propel the reader through a wide and varied intellectual landscape, particularly as these issues have affected Modern American thought. As entertaining as it is enlightening, Communication as Culture is certain to become a classic in its field.
