Der Begriff der Transkulturalität wurde von dem Philosophen Wolfgang Welsch konzipiert. Laut Welsch sei ein „interkultureller Dialog“ eine wertvolle Aufgabe, doch ist es seiner Meinung nach zweifelhaft, ob Interkulturalität das richtige Konzept sei, um den Intentionen dieses Dialogs gerecht werden zu können. Der Begriff der Interkulturalität besäße, laut Welsch, eine „kategoriale Vorentscheidung“ über die Beschaffenheit von Kulturen, welche im Hinblick auf heutige Phänomene kaum haltbar sei. Solche Kulturen, von denen Interkulturalität aufgrund des traditionellen Kulturbegriffs ausgeht, existieren heute kaum noch. Im Folgenden soll eine Einführung in die Geschichte des Begriffs „Kultur“ stattfinden. Nach einer knappen Erläuterung des Wortursprungs folgt ein Umriss des Kulturbegriffs nach Pufendorf. Hierauf wird der traditionelle, herdersche Kulturbegriff dargestellt, um ihn dann von der derzeitigen Ebene der kulturellen Evolution abzugrenzen. Als aktuelles Konzept der Kultur schlägt Dr. Wolfgang Welsch Transkulturalität vor. Mit diesem Konzept versucht Welsch den veränderten Zustand von Kulturen herauszuheben und deskriptiv richtig zu beschreiben. Die Hinführung zum Konzept der Transkulturalität soll über dessen Abgrenzung vom traditionellen Kulturkonzept und durch Abhebung von Interkulturalitäts- und Multikulturalitätsvorstellungen geführt werden. Auch der antreibende Aspekt der Globalisierung und die Angst vor der Uniformierung der Kulturen soll in dieser Arbeit schlaglichtartig beleuchtet werden. Außerdem soll festgestellt werden, ob das Konzept der Transkulturalität umzusetzen ist oder bereits in Teilaspekten des menschlichen Zusammenlebens und der kulturellen Ausdrucksform umgesetzt wurde, wie etwa in populärer Musik. Nach der Darstellung des Transkulturalitätskonzeptes soll deshalb versucht werden, dieses Konzept auf Musik zu übertragen.

Dieser Aspekt darf auf keinen Fall negativ betrachtet werden. Das Zusammenlernen in der Klasse mit Kindern mit Migrationshintergrund ist positiv konnotiert. Der Grundstein für ein friedliches Zusammenleben in einer Gemeinschaft mit verschiedensten Kulturen muss bereits in der Grundschule gelegt werden. Wird dieser Aspekt bereits in der frühen Kindheit gelehrt, fallen den Schülerinnen und Schülern meist kulturelle Unterschiede überhaupt nicht auf. Kinder werden als gut geboren und erst durch di e Interaktion mit der Gesellschaft verändern sich ihre Werte und Anschauungen.

Im ersten Teil wird hierzu der traditionelle Kulturbegriff vorgestellt und seine Ursachen und Wirkung sowohl historisch als auch in heutiger Zeit untersucht. Anhand eines Modells der interkulturellen Kommunikation wird Welschs Kritik an ebendieser nachvollzogen. Ausgehend von der tatsächlichen Verfassung von Kulturen und Identitäten wird dann im zweiten Teil das Konzept der Transkulturalität erläutert. Dabei werden Welschs Aussagen sowohl auf die deutsche Gesellschaft als auch auf sogenannte hybride Identitäten bezogen. Außerdem werden seine Thesen zum Kulturbegriff der Transkulturalität dargestellt, sowie deren Verhältnis zur Globalisierung geklärt. Nach einer kritischen Auseinandersetzung soll abschließend geprüft werden, inwieweit die Forderungen Welschs Eingang in den Unterricht für Deutsch als Fremd- bzw. Zweitsprache finden können.

Following in the wake of previous concepts in cultural and literary studies such as creolization, hybridity, and syncretism, and signalling a family relationship to terms such as transnationality, translocality, and transmigration, 'transcultural' terminology has unobtrusively but powerfully edged its way into contemporary theoretical and critical discourse. The four sections of this volume denote major areas where 'transcultural' questions and problematics have come to the fore: theories of culture and literature that have sought to account for the complexity of culture in a world increasingly characterized by globalization, transnationalization, and interdependence; realities of individual and collective life-worlds shaped by the ubiquity of phenomena and experiences relating to transnational connections and the blurring of cultural boundaries; fictions in literature and other media that explore these realities, negotiate the fuzzy edges of 'ethnic' or 'national' cultures, and participate in the creation of transnational public spheres as well as transcultural imaginations and memories; and, finally, pedagogy and didactics, where earlier models of teaching 'other' cultures are faced with the challenge of coming to terms with cultural complexity both in what is being taught and in the people it is taught to, and where 'target cultures' have become elusive. The idea of 'locating' culture and literature exclusively in the context of ethnicities or nations is rapidly losing plausibility throughout an 'English-speaking world' that has long since been multi- rather than monolingual. Exploring the prospects and contours of 'Transcultural English Studies' thus reflects a set of common challenges and predicaments that in recent years have increasingly moved centre stage not only in the New Literatures in English, but also in British and American studies.
