Book excerpt: Control and Dynamic Systems: Advances in Theory and Applications, Volume 42: Analysis and Control System Techniques for Electric Power Systems, Part 2 of 4 covers the research studies on the significant advances in areas including economic operation of power systems and voltage and power control techniques. This book is composed of eight chapters and begins with a survey of the application of parallel processing to power system analysis as motivated by the requirement for faster computation. The next chapters deal with the issues of power system protection from a system point of view, the voltage stability phenomenon, and an overview of the techniques used in the reliability evaluation of large electric power systems. These chapters also look into the reliability assessment of bulk power systems, which are the composite of generation and high-voltage transmission, often called composite systems. These topics are followed by investigations of the potential of integer quadratic optimization to improve efficiency in a radial electric distribution system through the coordination of switched capacitors and regulators. Other chapters consider the issues of the optimal operation of a power system that are substantially complicated as a result of the large system scale nature of these issues. The final chapters explore the techniques for achieving requisite speed improvements that are essential to electric power systems and the problems on effective methods in hydro optimization. This book will be of value to electrical engineers, designers, and researchers.

The book systematically discusses the electrical aspects of switching, details the way load and fault currents are interrupted, the impact of fault currents, and compares switching equipment in particular circuit-breakers. The authors also explain all examples of practical switching phenomena by examining real measurements from switching tests. Other highlights include: up to date commentary on new developments in transmission and distribution technology such as ultra-high voltage systems, vacuum switchgear for high-voltage, generator circuit-breakers, distributed generation, DC-interruption, aspects of cable systems, disconnector switching, very fast transients, and circuit-breaker reliability studies. Key features: Summarises the issues and technological solutions associated with the switching of currents in transmission and distribution systems. Introduces and explains recent developments such as vacuum switchgear for transmission systems, SF6 environmental consequences and alternatives, and circuit-breaker testing. Provides practical guidance on how to deal with unacceptable switching transients. Details the worldwide IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) standards on switching equipment, illustrating current circuit-breaker applications. Features many figures and tables originating from full-power tests and established training courses, or from measurements in real networks. Focuses on practical and application issues relevant to practicing engineers. Essential reading for electrical engineers, utility engineers, power system application engineers, consultants and power systems asset managers, postgraduates and final year power system undergraduates.

Book excerpt: The efficiency of today's automobile PowerNets is limited and widely exhausted and the introduction of new systems is becoming more and more difficult. An offered remedy is the introduction of a new voltage level of 42 V. Within the scope of the EUROMOTOR symposium, associated problems were discussed and special methods for the solution were presented. The book describes current as well as futuristic fusing and protection concepts of vehicle PowerNets. It presents the introduction of a new 42 V-PowerNet into automobiles, the description of components and fusing systems for wires and electrical loads, the treatment of problems such as short-circuits and arcs, as well as seizing preventive measures. By focusing on the substantial aspects, the book addresses developers such as practitioners, who are active with automobile suppliers and vehicle manufacturers. Companies occupied with fusing devices, semiconductors, trunk circuits and electrical and/or electronic consumers will find this book especially interesting.

Book excerpt: This book presents the latest research on switching control, adaptive switching control, and their applications in the transient stability control and analysis of large-scale complex power systems. In large-scale complex power systems, renewable power generators, flexible power electronics converters, and distributed controllers are widely employed. Due to the poor overcurrent tolerance capability of power electronics converters and lacking of coordination mechanism, stability control in events, such as natural disasters, cascaded faults, and severe disturbances, is viewed as the key challenge in the operation of these systems. High-performance self-coordinated controllers are needed for the control of important power sources and power electronics converters. Adaptive switching controllers are a group of controllers designed by the authors for the control of various renewable power generators, synchronous generators, and modular multilevel converters. These controllers operate in a self-coordinated manner and aim to employ the largest transient control energy of converters and power sources. Imbalance between power generation and consumption is largely filled by the application of these controllers, and transient stability of power systems can be significantly improved. This book covers both the preliminary knowledge and key proofs in the design and stability analysis of adaptive switching control systems, and considerable simulation and experimental results are presented to illustrate the application and performance of the controllers. This book is used as a reference book for researchers and engineers in fields of electrical engineering and control engineering.

Setting up a safe and effective AC power system from the very beginning can help avoid costly downtime and repairs, provide backup power during system outages, and minimize workplace accidents. For the past 15 years, Jerry Whitaker's AC Power Systems Handbook has supplied industry professionals with a comprehensive, practical guide to the key elements of AC power for commercial and industrial systems. This third edition is thoroughly revised and completely reorganized to reflect the changing demands of modern power systems. To ease navigation, many sections are now presented as separate chapters filled with updated and expanded information. Most notably, the author adds heavily in the areas of transient suppression hardware, electrical system components, and power system fundamentals. Following a logical progression, coverage flows from power system operation to protecting equipment loads, selecting the right level of protection, grounding, standby power, and safety. Along the way, the author paints a clear picture of the sources of disturbances, the tradeoffs involved for different options, and the advantages and limitations of various approaches. Streamlined to be a hands-on, user-oriented guide, the AC Power Systems Handbook offers expert guidance on designing and installing a safe and efficient power system.

They possess characteristics such as exceptional strength, lightweight, temperature resistance (usually in excess of 160°C), chemical resistance and dimensional stability. In addition, plastics are relatively easy to process and can be coloured (or transparent) and moulded to create innovative and attractive structures. The fun car market illustrates the increasing use of plastics materials and the versatility and appeal needed in materials for today's marketplace. This two day international conference brought together experts discussing the latest developments in materials including properties, processing and applications. There are many different types of high performance elastomers. Their unique properties are essential in hostile environments and application areas include the petrochemical and refining industries, automotive, aerospace, defence, wire and cable, construction, chemical plants, nuclear, medical, food and seals. Correct material selection, compounding and processing are essential. These proceedings have brought together a collection of papers for material suppliers, engineers, compounders, manufacturers, processors and end-users of high performance elastomers who discussed the most appropriate materials and formulations for different applications.

An essential guide to the City and Guilds 2394/2395 Initial Verification and Certification of Electrical Installation and Periodic Inspection and Testing qualifications, this book addresses the areas which have resulted in a considerable failure rate, such as the technical and legal terminology used within these exams. Full coverage of technical terms is included, as is the structure of exam questions and their interpretation. By running through examples of real exam questions in a step-by-step fashion, this book explains how to decode the questions and examine the answer choices in order to get to the correct answers. This book is ideal for all electricians, regardless of their experience, who need a testing qualification in order to take the next step in their career.
